-Closely related to the Dire Bear, the Slumbering Bear (sometimes called a "Snorlax") is a creature most well-known for its habits of long hibernation (frequently in highly-inconvenient locations), and then cataclysmic rage when rudely awakened. As bears go, it is rather rotund and ungainly-looking, sporting shorter limbs and a rounder head and body- this robs it of some speed, but does not reduce its hitting power. They are also distinct for being a blue-green color instead of more standard colors like other bears. Their life cycle is rather curious, as they will eat hundreds of pounds of food in a sitting, consuming nearly anything they can get their paws on, then entering a deep slumber from which it is nearly impossible to wake them. Loud noises, accidental impacts, children playing on the, and more- nothing seems able to wake them, short of threats against their life. If awakened, they are usually groggy and confused, yet annoyed- if those nearby act quietly and respectful, the Slumbering Bear may not react, but if they act aggressively or loud, the bear may lash out with terrifying vigor.

Jab's Notes:
The Snorlax is a famous "Early Pokemon", which blocks the player's path in two locations in the first game. Defeating it and capturing it will usually give you one of the strongest Pokemon in your party (most of the others available to catch are at Lvl. 15 at most; this one is Lvl. 30). As it's a Normal-Type, it's frequently glossed over, but as an early powerhouse it's quite lethal. Ash captured one in the anime, though it's rarely seen in battles, being a bit too big, docile and comedic for frequent use- it is typically only seen during Tournament Arcs, where it usually does pretty well for itself. His trademark is actually Ice Punch, which isn't a regular technique in the game (you neat TMs or Tutoring in order to bestow it upon a Snorlax).

-Initially one of 30-ish "Non-Evolving Pokemon", Snorlax was given a baby version in Munchlax.

-A friend of mine in college REALLY liked Snorlax, considering him some kind of "Spirit Animal" or whatever- he loved drawing him and thought he was just the neatest. He remains a bit of a series icon as one of the cuter and friendly-looking "BIG Pokemon", as he's almost seven feet tall in a game that typically makes most creatures man-sized.

-For stats, I kind of just took a Short-Faced Bear and altered some stuff- higher Toughness and the "Trance" Advantage.

Disabled (Animal)- Chanseys cannot speak to humans, nor use their paws to easily manipulate objects.

Total: Abilities: 16 / Skills: 12--6 / Advantages: 0 / Powers: 49 / Defenses: 3 (74)

-Chanseys are mysterious, ovoid, two-legged creatures who are fabled for their ability to lay eggs with restorative powers. They are believed to have been created by some of the more kind-hearted Gods as assistants to mortals, as they possess few fighting skills (but can lift great amounts for their size), and are instead very tough and capable of assisting others. Solitary beings, they appear to be entirely female, and reproduce asexually, with one out of every thousand eggs resulting in the birth of a larval form- called a "Happiny". This egg is nurtured and carried about for an incredibly-long period of time- often years, to the point where Chanseys are rarely seen without an egg carried in a tiny frontal pouch.

-Their mystical powers make Chanseys a highly sought-after creature, with White Mages and alchemists in general obsessing over the magical qualities of their eggs, and just about anyone desires one as a protection in case of injury. Due to this, the creatures are incredibly rare, and only the wealthiest will typically have access to them. To find them in the wild is a truly rare event.

Jab's Notes: Chanseys aren't a big part of Pokemon's background, but are famous for their use in the show- every Pokemon Center has a Nurse Joy, whose assistant is always a Chansey. Their inexplicable eggs are constantly seen, giving them a motherly look (which, combined with their pink skin and organic-looking head-tentacles, makes them look very feminine and harmless). They are rather infamous for their high HP- Chanseys are known to be a big part of competitive teams in the games, as the overall meta involves "take a high-HP Pokemon and lay out constantly-damaging attacks". They also take Ice Beam and Soft-Boiled in order to really put a hurting on varied powerful opponents (the metagame of the first generation is usually based around a small handful of Pokemon). To put a fine point on it, Chanseys are considered an "Automatic Take" for any competitive team in the early generations. The game designers seem to understand this, and so Chansey is actually the rarest creature in the Safari Zone- you only see it 1% of the time! You also aren't able to capture this Pokemon until fairly late in your run.

-Despite being a creature who doesn't evolve in the first game, it's since had two other forms added. The final evolution Blissey was introduced in the second generation, and the tiny Happiny is a Baby Pokemon in the fourth generation of games.

Powers:

Offense:
Unarmed +9 (+5 Damage, DC 20)

Defenses:
Dodge +5 (DC 15), Parry +6 (DC 16), Toughness +8, Fortitude +7, Will +5

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Kangaskhans cannot speak to humans, nor use their paws to easily manipulate objects.
Reputation (Fearsome)- Kangaskhans have a reputation for attacking anything that comes close to their infants, which are nearly always in the pouch of the female.

Total: Abilities: 36 / Skills: 16--8 / Advantages: 3 / Powers: 49 / Defenses: 6 (102)

-Kangaskhans are powerful creatures related to Glyptodonts, Armadillos and other Xenarthrans, but have developed a marsupial-like pouch, which typically store their young. Like Marsupials, the Kangaskhan gives birth to a nearly-helpless infant, bordering on an embryo, which then makes the long trek to its parents pouch, where it slowly develops over a period of months. The infant resides in its parents pouch for a period of three years, at which point a new infant typically inhabits it. Kangaskhan parents are known to mourn the loss of their offspring, even if a living child simply grows too old and leaves- in most mammals, the parent must drive off the infant in order to see the end of its maturity; with Kangaskhans, the child often has to escape its parent's overprotective clutches. This reproductive rate is so enhanced that many people have never even witnessed a female Kangaskhan with no infants- one without will nearly always be mistaken for a male (though these do not have pouches at all).

-Kangaskhans are known to be particularly ferocious parents, attacking anything that comes near their infant. That they are about a foot taller than most people, and very heavily-built, makes them even more dangerous. This build, combined with their frontal pouch, makes them fairly slow movers as females, as they are typically bipedal, and do not wish to risk crushing the baby. However, males will bull-rush aggressors routinely.

-Their fighting style is rare for Armadillos- they are tall, bipedal, and not nearly as defensive, instead being aggressive, volatile combatants which go on the offense, bull-rushing foes.

Jab's Notes:
Kangaskhans have always stood out as being one of the weirder Pokemon, to me. It resembles SOME Earth animals, but only vaguely in many cases- it's obviously kangaroo-esque, but is also vaguely reptilian, not to mention armored (the "khan" comes from the Mongolian-esque armor and ear-coverings they have). They are also very unusual in being First-Generation Pokemon that have never received an extra evolutionary form- they are simply a 100% female race which always appears with child. It shares this "No Evolutions" trait with only seven other Pokemon (Tauros, Lapras, Ditto, Pinsir, Farfetch'd, Aerodactyl are the others) and the Legendaries- everything else either has a baby form or a more-enhanced one.

-Kangaskhans were REALLY hard to find in the game, appearing only in the Safari Zone, at which point a trainer likely already had a well-balanced squad- I didn't really see the Normal-Type as necessary. They are almost NEVER seen in the anime, with one episode focused around a group that are raising a human child, and the rest being mere cameos. It's thus one of the most "Odd Pokemon Out" you'll ever see. It did, however, gain a Mega-Evolution in the most recent generation of games, as the baby grows vastly and turns into a powerful fighter that strengthens the parent.

Defenses:
Dodge +7 (DC 17), Parry +7 (DC 17), Toughness +4, Fortitude --, Will --

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Porygons cannot speak to humans, nor use their limbs to easily manipulate objects.

Total: Abilities: -8 / Skills: 10--5 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 111 / Defenses: 7 (117)

-Golems of a sort, Porygons are sentries and guardians of a peculiar nature- they are too small and too limbless to cause any sort of physical damage to even a rudimentary threat (their feet are blocky and short, and their wings are flightless stubs), which makes many disregard them. However, their true power lies in the most reasonable of defenses- that against the forces of Magic. There is nothing Mages enjoy less than other Mages invading their inner sanctums and messing about with their things, and so these Golems were created as a fail-safe. Their unique power is to absorb ambient magical energy and convert it into a series of flashing lights known to cause seizures in most sentient beings. This means that Wizards, Mages and other Sorcerers are prone to disabling the entire party if they set off a magic spell in the presence of one of these small, often hidden, creations. As such, a smart Mage will often place a Porygon in one of the most dangerous-looking parts of their lair- luring a rival into casting a magic spell that activates the bursts.

-Porygons also have an extra defensive measure- they may convert themselves to be immune to the last attack that struck it, meaning that techniques to damage them rarely work the same way twice. Some Mages will also infuse their Porygons with some form of offensive attack- typically Lightning Blasts or Sleep-Inducing Gas.

Jab's Notes: Porygon is one of the most infamous Pokemon of all time, and largely for unfair reasons. HE is the source for the famous episode of the anime which sent over 600 (!!) Japanese people to the hospital when it aired- apparently hordes of people sat WAY too close to the screen, causing tremendous seizures when Pikachu used a particularly-extravagant show of light to defeat some enemy weapons. The show was taken off the air for several months, the entire world heard about it (and immediately started making jokes- anime was flashy and weird enough BEFORE news of this got out), warnings were broadcast before every new episode in Japan, and Porygon was basically eliminated from all Pokemon media, for good.

-Which is unfair, because, of course, PORYGON DID NOT GIVE ANYONE ANY SEIZURES. It was PIKACHU who did it! But because it was Porygon's debut, he took the blame, and since the episode never re-aired and was even eliminated from foreign broadcasts (nobody even got any EDITED versions!), most people never saw him. And his name was poison enough that even later games' evolutions, Porygon-2 and Porygon-Z, did not appear in the TV series. This makes him the most under-utilized Pokemon in history.

-The funny thing is... you can tell Pokemon was an EXCELLENT GAME because this kind of thing would have destroyed any other show. But instead, the show just soldiered on after this gap, and is STILL ON TODAY, despite making its debut while I was in High School. But poor Porygon will likely never get featured in things ever again. Despite that, he can be rather potent in the game, as the repeated further evolutions actually enhance a creature that was ALREADY supposed to be fully-evolved, meaning that the upgrades tend to make it even stronger than the "final version" that was supposed to be a thing. It notably has a ridiculously-varied array of moves even as a basic Porygon, getting Electric, Bug, Psychic and Normal-Type moves.

Disabled (Animal)- Snakes cannot speak to humans, nor use their tails to easily manipulate objects.
Disabled (Senses)- Snakes have poor eyesight & hearing.
Power Loss (Venom)- Snakes must penetrate the skin to envenom their prey; creatures with too much raw toughness (above +8) or any amount of Impervious over the bitten area are immune. Antivenins can halt the effect as well.
Weakness (Cold-Blooded)- Reptiles are cold-blooded- that is, their bodies are the same temperature as the air around them. As such, they are slow & sluggish in cold temperatures, and will die quickly if left in winter-like conditions. They must warm up before they are any good.

Total: Abilities: 28 / Skills: 36--18 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 41 / Defenses: 17 (111)

-Large versions of common animals are a frequent sight all over Castellia- not just in Giant Valley (where everything is large), but various recurring species all over the world are like this. Such as the Violet Cobra- a huge snake that hails from the Raj, same as Nagas, and often mistaken for them. Known for their violet color, these lethal reptiles are as wide around as some adult men, and known to be very aggressive- a lethal combination. Their venom is not much more potent than that of regular cobras, but this is little comfort to those venomized by their seven-inch fangs. Though deadly to man, they rarely take large bipeds, preferring pigs, tapirs and other, barrel-shaped creatuers, who make easier meals.

-The creature has a very large hood, which unfurls to showcase large eye-like markings. These are known to startle individuals- animal and sentient alike- into a stunned silence, leaving them unable to move or react. This "Glare" is thought to be mystical in nature, but is largely unexplained. The creature uses this both for defense and offense, frequently biting paralyzed victims.

-Their young are often mistaken for rattlesnakes by outsiders (though those creatures are from a far distant region), as their tails come with rounded scutes which are slowly shedded with age- unlike rattlesnakes, they decrease with time, eventually revealing a bared tail. Toothless at first, they typically only eat eggs, which makes them a nuisance to farmers and birds.

Jab's Notes: Ekans and Arbok ("Snake" and "Kobra" reversed) are iconic Pokemon, but sadly thrown into the "Jobber Pile" owing to the fact that one was the longtime Pokemon of Jessie of Team Rocket fame. This meant that we saw Ekans/Arbok and Koffing/Weezing lose EVERY SINGLE WEEK, usually to a single shot from Pikachu. It used to be the sole Pokemon to use the "Glare" Paralyzing move, but now it's shared by a handful of others (including Seviper, who's basically "New Arbok" in all but name). This meant that you saw a LOT of this Pokemon, but its status meant that you never saw others of its type in major roles. Eventaully, both Arbok & Weezing were released in order to watch over a wild herd of Koffings & Ekanses, leading to a new era for the show- Team Rocket would gain new Pokemon in their place.

-A Pokemon you catch relatively early in the game, it evolves at only Level 22. Not really that inventive in design, they're basically "Purple Snakes", but Arbok has a pretty cool hood design, and the fact that it's an ELEVEN FOOT LONG GIANT SNAKE ramps up the intimidation factor nicely- though shorter than a real Indian Cobra (which can hit fifteen feet easily), it's probably about two feet in diameter, which is horrifying. I decided to make the "Glare" more a feature of its intimidation rather than a magical ability.

And that finishes up several groups in a row- Water-Types, Normal-Types and Poison-Types! The Water-Types in particular were incredibly numerous, as I'd forgotten just how many the first generation had. I don't think they'd try to replicate those numbers again.

The Normal-Types were the most difficult to conceive of- I'd held off on Kangaskhan and Porygon for YEARS because an inability to properly come up with stuff just off the top of my head. For those, I really had to sit down and actually THINK of what was going in there- the armadillo relations for Kangaskhan and the Reaction-Aura nature of Porygon's ability came at the last second.

That's pretty nifty news. I always thought that the seizure-inducing fighting monster was the weird origami bird rather than our old friend lightning mouse.

-Venonats are rarely-seen and little-understood, and often given a fearsome reputation when they ARE seen- they are large, bulbous, hairy insects with large visible fangs. They are vampiric, drinking the blood of their prey, though typically they do not kill their targets. Instead, they spray a pheromone that puts targets to sleep, thus allowing the Venonat to casually pierce their flesh and lap up blood at their leasure. Often taking a pint or two, they are quite debilitating to those who've been victimized, so the creatures are typically highly-disliked in areas in which they prosper. Their adult stage is winged and sports three "horns" atop its head, while the younger version is terrestrial and wingless.

-Venonats are entirely nocturnal and their dark coloring helps them blend in at night, so they are rarely seen. Livestock and other large animals are their most frequent victims. Their powder is often harvested by Mages and Rangers for poison and other things, so live Venonats are actually worth a decent amount. Also unusual are their incredible eyes- compound structures which can see in absolute darkness as well as in daylight- those who study them have witnessed an unknown type of energy being utilized to create a "map" of the environment.
-Very rarely, Venonats are known to develop psychic powers, typically a low-level Mental Blast. The reasons for this are unknown.

Jab's Notes:
Venonat was a bit of an odd Pokemon out in the games- Beedrill and Butterfree were attained far earlier, and occupied the same niche, while also looking much cooler. Venonat was just a fuzzy purple ball with eyes, while its evolution, Venomoth, just looks like a regular bug but with "cartoon eyes". It was also a Poison/Bug-Type, which made it pretty generic. It's as clear a "Filler" species as you're gonna get in the first game, looking very plain by comparison to most other Pokemon- not really the most damning thing in the world (you gotta have a baseline or you can't tell what the REALLY weird things are; plus, you needed 151 guys in the first game- the most of any generation!), but it doesn't help their case.

-Despite that, one was used as a Pokemon by Tracey, an artist who was one of Ash's travelling companions. It rarely battled, however, typically being used only for its "Radar Eyes" that could locate difficult-to-find things. Because the Pokemon Wiki is INSANELY detailed, it indicates that only two of this Venonate's moves were ever seen. Many appear in background scenes, but you almost never see them fight.

-As a Pokemon, it's actually rather potent, having powers from various Types available to it- not just Poison, but heavy-duty stuff like Psychic-Type moves (even "Psychic"!) and sleep-inducing Grass-Type stuff.

You all might notice that the PLs have been a lot more conservative for this batch than it otherwise is- it's somewhat deliberate. I didn't want ALL the Pokemon to be uber-tier Monsters, and lower PLs help them fit more into certain ecosystems (as much as anything with POKEMON in it can count as being an "ecosystem").

-Pinsirs are man-sized fighting bugs that resemble giant bipedal beetles- their extremely pronounced pincers unusually sprout from the sides of their heads, away from their much smaller mouths (which feature vertically-aligned teeth, instead of horizontal). The males will battle over mates, "jousting" with their pincers until one falls or dies- the victor will gain access to the females in the area. In this sense, they are effectively enormous stag beetles. They are very territorial, and will even charge humanoids who come too close to their nests- the smaller females will be just as vicious as the males. The tenacity with which the creatures battle has not gone unnoticed by sentients, who often use the creatures in gambling-themed fights, throwing two aggressive, trained males against each other.

-Pinsirs burrow into the ground to create their nests, and the females will lay clutches of dozens of eggs, which hatch into larval forms that take over a year to mature. Prey that is killed by the pincers will be mashed up and swallowed by the tinier mouth.

Jab's Notes: Pinsir is another unusual "Original 151" Pokemon with no other Evolutionary descendants, though other games introduce very similar creatures, such as Heracross. Only minor Pokemon in the show, they are given a very simple design, making them ideal for "Background" shots- there are DOZENS of appearances of this thing in the show, typically only as a Pokemon just standing around somewhere, or being a random trainer's Pokemon. Since they just look like angry little pillbugs with giant pincers, they kind of fit the "Mean; Non-Heroic" design, so you see a lot of them. Despite that, it and Heracross both gained Mega Evolutions in the last generation of games.

There are so many insane-looking things in D&D and Pokemon when you really think about it. One of the weirdest things of the former setting is how casual they seem about Ogres, Trolls and things like that- I've seen people intimidated by a *6'6"* guy in real life, and these things are supposed to be TEN FEET TALL in some instances.

The number of Giant Bugs that are treated as minor nuisances is funny when you consider that a tarantula the size of a golden retriever would be legitimately the scariest animal in the history of the world.

I have to figure something like that living anywhere near civilization is going to get exterminated quickly unless there's some benefit to having them around

-Butterfrees are extremely large, butterfly-like creatures with huge eyes and tiny mouths, typically seen as "cute" to outsiders. Non-aggressive and non-predatory, they are nectar-feeders much like common butterflies, but require massive plants such as those found only in magical forests home to gigantic plants. Their wings are considered highly-valuable to alchemists, but the creatures are hard to catch and kill- these same wings produce various concoctions of noxious powders from their scales, many of which can stun, paralyze or knock out their victims. Hard to dodge, these powder storms have often been used by clever Wood Elves and Dryads to protect their forest homes- some powder is often more effective than even the most potent of damaging magic. Tree Men are known to have whole flocks of Butterfree about them, as they appear drawn to these wise creatures of the forests.

-Butterfrees are famous for dying after mating, much to the heartbreak of anyone who keeps one as a companion, as the creatures are inevitably driven to pair up and fly off in mass migrations, leading to their deaths. The typical lifespan of a Butterfree is only about two years- they begin life as harmless Giant Caterpillars, then encase themselves in hard cocoons (with very strong, ultra-hard shells, which are sometimes repurposed by sentient beings into armor parts), at which point a fully-grown Butterfree emerges a month later. It stays in this form for above a year, finally searching for a mate.

Jab's Notes: Butterfree was famously the first Pokemon that Ash ever caught in the anime, and continued to be used for many episodes thereafter... at which point it became the first Pokemon he ever RELEASED. Having caught it as a Caterpie, it evolved rapidly- the useless Metapod form being explained carefully by the show's "Exposition" characters, at which point it rapidly changed into the cute "Sleep Powder"-creating butterfly Pokemon. However, while I was still watching the series the first time around, Ash soon had to release it so that it could mate- their tearful reunion became very famous to the show's fans, and rumors even sprouted up that it was saying goodbye to go mate and then DIE (this, it turned out, to be a falsehood). After this, they stopped appearing in the show in major roles. A bizarre thing for me was reading up on this episode, and finding out that it was the TWENTY-FIRST EPISODE OF THE SERIES. This means that Butterfree is one of Ash's most short-lived Pokemon ever, yet every single Pokemon fan I know is fully aware of the entire story arc. Crazy how things like that work.

-Like Weedle/Kakuna/Beedrill, Butterfree engages in a very early-level form of evolving, as the weak bug turns into a harmless cocoon for a few levels, where you're stuck putting it out there and then withdrawing so that it gains some XP before it finally evolves into its final form at Level 10. Butterfree is handy early on for all of its Sleep Powder-type stuff, but it isn't really a powerhouse- both it and Beedrill evolve a bit too early to have the really "crunchy" statlines. The anime famously features a PINK Butterfree, the first time we ever saw an alternate color in the show, but it wasn't a "Shiny" Pokemon, as those are much less different from the main one. Which is really strange- you'd think they'd just copy what the anime did.

I'm a little late for this one, but I've really got to hand it to you for making a sentient computer program work in a fantasy setting.
