-Drakes are often mistaken for juvenile Dragons, but they are actually entirely different creatures- they are of animal intelligence and cannot speak, but possess many Draconic abilities, such as Breath Weapons. Drakes are much more common than Dragons, and are usually found in large groups- each keyed towards one particular element. Drakes are highly-prized by animal collectors, people in need of guard animals, or those who wish to have very powerful creatures to act as semi-controllable mounts. Capturing such creatures (even as eggs) and training them, of course, is easier said than done- hundreds have died attempting such things.

-Drakes are common enough in some areas, though tend not to sprawl out, being large Apex Predators who are nonetheless too small to deal with incredibly-large or dangerous animals such as Manticores or Tyrannosaurs. Most creatures keep their distance, however.

Types of Drakes:
WIND DRAKES- PL 9 (95): Speed +2, Leaping 4, AE: Flight 4 (Gliding), "Air Cannon" Air Blast 7 [18]
MAGMA DRAKES- PL 9 (119): Magma Aura 4, Magma Blast 8, Immunity to Heat Effects [42]
ICE DRAKES- PL 9 (111): Immunity to Cold Effects, Ice Snare 8 [34]
SMOKE DRAKES- PL 9 (88): Darkvision, "Smoke Bomb" Concealment (Vision) (Attack, 30ft. Cloud +2) [11]

-Fire Drakes and Water Drakes are very different from their peers, resulting in different statlines.

-Charmanders are the young of powerful Fire-Breathing, animal-intelligence Dragons, and are known for being much less intimidating overall. Tameable and relatively calm and easy to train at first, they are infamous for rapidly outgrowing their trainer's capabilities, and becoming more and more difficult to handle with age. Most Animal Trainers know well the tales of trainers killed by their own Charmanders as they got older. Many Charmanders are known to grow to human-size and stay there, never growing further, while others with more ferocity, intensity and drive have been known to reach over a dozen feet tall, growing wings and looking every bit like their Draconic cousins.

Jab's Notes:
Charmander is the remainder of the "Big Starter Three" (easily the greatest and most stand-out Starters in Pokémon history- no other Generation's comes close. I find a lot of the other starters to be rather pathetic, though I've been impressed by a couple). It's probably the cutest of the Starters, though it's infamous in the anime for being the ONLY one of Ash's early Pokémon to reach it's final evolution (Bulbasaur & Squirtle stubbornly refused to evolve for whatever reason), and it became more and more of a dick as time went on (something I reflected in the build). Eventually, Charizard was Ash's mainline Heavy-Hitter, doing the most damage in Tournaments, and getting Put on a Bus to Charizard Valley (where it was beat up by other Mary Sue-ish Charizards in a move than annoyed several fans- nobody likes seeing an established heavy-hitter badly dissed like that).

Liking all the different types of dragons. Especially like how the colors are more varied for each type and based more off environment or their breath weapon.

This actually made a random thought pop in my head. I wonder why the classic D&D "coloration=breath weapon" for dragons didn't give the copper variant the lightning breath?

Because lightning isn't copper coloured. Granted, it isn't blue either, but...

yeah, I didn't like how D&D had things so static, in that everyone of the same color had identical powers, and they even shared personality traits ("these dragons love riddles!"). To me, Dragons should be as varied as people. I mean, they're near-ageless, super-genius monsters.

-Sea Drakes are easily the most common kind of Drake, but are relatively hard to spot for land-loving humanoids- they are aquatic creatures, and very speedy. Often mistaken for simple "Sea Serpents" (though those are common enough), they have elemental powers, same as other Drakes. Like seahorses (which are much smaller), the creatures are known for the fact that the males take care of the young, rather than the females.

Jab's Notes: Horsea & Seadra are among the more "Typical" Pokemon of the first generation- Take an animal, give it a common Element, and make a slightly bigger, more-badass one, and call it a day. They aren't BAD... but in a game that features Gyarados, not a lot of people picked them. Horsea are typically-cute Seahorses, while Seadra (which it reaches at the fairly-late Lvl. 32) are bigger creatures, and more powerful. It was never given a serious push in the cartoon- Misty caught a Horsea, but never even raised it to a Seadra! Generation II introduced the "Kingdra", which is actually a Water/Dragon type (though even Seadra has some "Dragon-Type" moves).

-Linnorms are the most powerful of all Dragons- so much the better that it seems only a few of each of the three species exists. Titanically powerful monsters, Linnorms are incredibly ancient- even the Dragons cannot remember ever seeing a child version- it may be that these beasts are dying out, should the last generation pass on. They are easily distinguished from "Common" Dragons by virtue of their lack of wings (though the creatures can still fly, via innate Magical force) and rear legs. Instead, they move rapidly via serpentine undulations, and appear to be even faster than their Draconic ilk. All known Linnorms are shockingly evil, though not all of them are evil in the same precise ways. Each of the Dragons possess their own Magical Powers, making them nearly unkillable to anyone save the Gods (and even the Gods themselves are wary of such creatures).

Jab's Builds: Y'know what's cooler than a Dragon? A more ancient, MORE EVIL type of Dragon, unknown to virtually all. I loved these guys in the 3.5 "Monster Manual II"- it was like Dragons on steroids, and if there's one creature that deserves upgrades to Epic Level campaigns, it's the freaking Dragons. I keep the "only a few left alive" syndrome, making them an eternal, tired, dying-out breed. This opens many storytelling opportunities- other creatures (from heroes to Demons to Dragons) will seek out the creatures' knowledge, treasure, or hide (can you imagine what it's body is worth in monetary value?), and I even have an idea for a super-campaign involving heroes searching for the first Linnorn Egg to be laid in over a millenium- opening the floodgates of every crazy Quester and would-be dictator in the world. Some of these guys are REALLY freaking expensive- their powers are massive in scope, and cover a huge range. Most of these things would be nigh-impossible for any party to defeat, as it should be.

GRAY LINNORM
PL 14 (363)
Abilities:
-1 Strength, -1 Stamina [-4]
Powers:
"Draconic Attacks"
"Acid Spray" Damage 14 (Extras: Area- 60ft. Line +2, Secondary Effect 12) Linked to Weaken Toughness 10 (Extras: Affects Objects, Area- 60ft. Line +2) (94) -- [99]

  • AE: "Acid Weapon" Blast 16 (Extras: Penetrating 8, Secondary Effect 12) Linked to Weaken Toughness 14 (Extras: Affects Objects) (80)
  • AE: "Tail Swipe" Strength-Damage +2 (Extras: Area- 60ft. Burst +2 for 14 ranks) (30)

Immunity 6 (Acid Damage, Drowning) [6]
Immunity 1 (Drowning) [1]
"Echolocation" Senses 4 (Extended, Ultra & Accurate Hearing) [4]

-Gray Linnorms are the weakest variety, though still more powerful than almost any other Dragon. Sleek and dark gray, they emit Acid like Bog Dragons (it is believed that both are related), and tend to attack with otherwhelming offense from high-peak homes. They are equally at-home in swamps or aquatic territory, however- many prefer inlets and valleys for their homes.

Senses 1 (Infravision) [1]
Immunity 20 (Fire & Heat Effects, Cold Effects) [20]
Movement 1 (Environmental Adaptation- Heat & Volcanic Regions) [2]

-Dread Linnorms are the largest of their kind, and their most notable feature is existence of two gigantic heads. They have the unique ability to use TWO different kinds of Breath Weapons- that of Ice and Fire. This makes them the equivalent of a Fire & Frost Dragon combined. These Dragons tend to burrow into the Earth, living in massive, labyrinthine tunnel systems. These lairs are well-laid-out with traps both natural and magical in nature, and the Dragons tend to live alone.

-Corpse Tearers are so decayed and vicious-looking, and spend time with so many Undead creatures, that many mistake them for Undead themselves. Instead, these creatures specialize in the creation of Undead creatures, and often have massive armies of Undead to act as sentries, minions and spies. The few Corpse Tearers left alive are shockingly evil beings, but can also be gregarious and helpful if the mood strikes them- they've learned from each other in a society of sorts (they meet up every century or so, mostly to visit and brag). They are among the best Linnorms to go to for aid or advice- they can even lend their services to mortals who impress them. But be warned- the mercurial species may attack without warning, or decide that an impressive specimen belongs in their menagerie.

-Most supreme of the world's "unintelligent" Dragons are the Dragonites- quick, intelligent (for animals) and mighty, the creatures are usually mistaken for Sea Serpents or standard Dragons, and are highly-sought-after as mounts or prey for adventurers, but are almost never found- they are very stealthy, and tend to avoid sentients.

Jab's Builds: The "Dratini" Evolutionary Chain have long been one of the most popular sets in Pokemon- the Dratini is adorable, the Dragonair cool-looking, and the Dragonite huge and imposing despite its Grimace-like shape. As the only full-blown "Dragon"-type in the first game, it's somewhat legendary, though later games have added a lot more bad-ass Dragons. One notable episode of the anime featured a TITANIC Dragonite which left gamers disappointed at the more reasonable stats of the video game version (which is barely taller than a person). I really, REALLY wanted Pokemon from this set, but I recall absolutely NEVER finding them in the Safari Zone (the only place to catch them), or being able to capture them once I did. That area was NUTS for frustration, and it kind of bummed me out.

Re: Castellia- A Fantasy Setting (Dragons! Charizard! Seadra! Linnorms!)

Post by Jabroniville »

Okay, so that's it for the Dragons! Filling them out with Dratini, Dragonaire and Dragonite is such an obvious thing I'm shocked I didn't do it last time I posted Castellia stuff- I must have been getting burned out from all the Fantasy Builds (I usually spend the last couple of days of each major "set" being bored and wanting to start something new :)). So with that, I only have a handful more of the original creature builds from Castellia to re-post, followed by the Original Characters I created for the setting. After that, it'll really just be filling out the rest of the Original Pokemon, and probably a handful of Monster Manual-related builds. I'd like to eventually get to ALL of the original 3.5 Edition MM, but that'll be a long time in finishing, and this thread won't be updated that often while I'm doing that.

HOWEVER, I'd like to see which of the following Pokemon you'd all most like to see in this thread. There's a reasonable number left (44- more if I decide to do any intermediary forms), but I already got most of the ones I REALLY wanted to do out of the way. Also, if there's Pokemon from other series you want to see, let me know.

1) Magneton-Magnemite
2) Voltorb-Electrode
3) Electabuzz

The main ones I'd like to see your take on is Cubone/Marowak, Psyduck/Golduck, Clefairy, and Vulpix/Ninetails. Oh, and when you start looking for Mr. Mime and Jynx pics get ready for some nightmare fuel .
