Background/History: Born in 2105, Deunan Knute is the heroine of Masamune Shirow's cyberpunk epic Appleseed. She's nominally an American, although in the world of Appleseed that doesn't really mean much. What she really is, however, is a superb athlete with an unparalleled reaction time, reflexes, and vision. She's also bad-tempered and bitchy, but we won't go into that right now.

Deunan is the daughter of Carl Knute, and was brought up from an early age to know how to handle herself in any number of situations. She entered the Police Academy at the age of 17, and was made a member of the Los Angeles Police Department SWAT team approximately two years later. In 2125, when she was twenty, World War V broke out, and Deunan and Briareos Hecatonchries (see) fled LA and spent some time living in the ruins of "badside" where they where eventually found by Hitomi and brought back to Olympus. As she knew really no other line of work, Deunan joined ESWAT, the Olympus antiterrorist military arm, where she remains.

Personality/Motivation: Where to start? Probably the best way is to let Masamune Shirow say a few worlds about Deunan: "...her investigative sense is poor and her character worse." and "She's not involved in this sort of work out of some sense of justice or a particular desire to fight. In this story, one of the premises is that you may get involved over your head in this business, but you'll never be able to get out."

What does all this mean? For starters, Deunan is always armed, always. A pistol or two, multiple knives, and so forth. She will not hesitate to draw a weapon either, although fortunately, she is not the type to shoot first and ask questions later. Deunan carries weapons because, simply put, she doesn't trust anyone (except Briareos and a few other exceptions). Of course, in her line of work this is a bit of an asset. To make matters worse, Deunan has a terrible temper, and is seen blowing her top a number of times in Appleseed. Magus (also in ESWAT) probably sums it up best with: "What is that idiotic broad squalling about now?" Personally I'd kick her off of any special operations team I was running (Deunan does not work or play well with others) and probably the only reason why Olympus keeps her around is due to her phenomenal physical skills

Quote: "I'm too much of a rationalist. I feel that money should be spent to protect victims, not criminals. Best thing to do with those thugs is wipe them out."

Powers/Tactics: For a supposedly "normal" character, this gal is scaaaaaaaaaary. I gave her as high a dex and as many feats as I did due to several scenes of Deunan fighting opponents in groups of two or more. In Appleseed Volume 3 she starts out with four knives and ends up wiping out a sixteen-man squad. In Appleseed Volume 4 she ends up in a brutal fight with three opponents in close quarters and comes out totally unscathed (while trashing the three of them). If we presume these three men Are strong to mid lvl soldiers then she has serious defense and take down attack 2 at least,

On top of her natural skills, Deunan has considerable hand-to-hand training (the exact style is never specified and is probably a mix of styles). She is also quite good with firearms, and is an excellent shot. She also has extensive police, SWAT, and ESWAT training as well. which I represented with her feats and skill selection.

The Appleseed Databook has this to say about Deunan: "Multiple implants into her system filter out most drugs and viruses. ... It's fully capable of warding off such things as mild anesthetics, chloroform B, and lysin..." I bought this as immunity to diseases and poisons, Depending on how individual Game Masters define drugs and viruses in their game, this may or may not be appropriate.

Appearance: Deunan is a mixture of several races. Shirow gives her heritage as follows: Deunan's maternal grandmother was a "cafe au lait" (mixed white/black parentage) Sudanese. She married an Anglo-French BBC journalist, and their daughter married Carl Knute. Their daughter was Deunan.

Deunan is about 23 years-old as of Appleseed Volume 4. She stands about 5'6" with a very athletic build. Her skin is naturally very tanned, and she has blonde hair that just comes down to her shoulders.

Designer's Notes: Shirow states in the Appleseed Databook that "...Deunan and Bri -- are near-geniuses in their mastery of technique and in the senses they posses. ... They are not supermen or superwomen. They are simply highly-trained professionals." I tired to simulate this with Deunan's characteristics and her extensive list of skills and feats.

Note: As written, Deunan would make one very, very scary Aegis agent.

Background/History: Appleseed Book Four has this to say about Briareos: "Originally a black man from the Mediterranean, Briareos was used as a terrorist by the KGB while still a child. He sought political asylum in the U.S.A. after killing his unit's commander of operations...."

Born in 2096, Briareos first acted as a terrorist at the age of ten, and killed his commander two years later, fleeing Europe (I presume). He met Deunan Knute (see) in 2116, joining Carl Knute's (Deunan's father) Special Security Forces team. In 2122 Briareos was caught in an explosion planted by enemies he had made in his former KGB life, and underwent a full-body cyborg replacement. The next year he entered a rehab center and was upgraded to the new Hecatonchires cyborg system. War broke out a few years later, and Briareos and Deunan ended up fleeing to the ruins of "badside" where they were found by Hitomi, who was working on orders of the Olympus Central Management Bureau. Returning with Hitomi to Olympus, Briareos and Deunan joined ESWAT, the Olympus antiterrorist military arm. Briareos has been part of ESWAT ever since.

Personality/Motivation: It's hard to hang an exact personality on Briareos. Unlike Deunan, he doesn't have large, glaring personality quirks that make it easy to assign a Psychological Limitation to. His quote (below) seems to sum up his attitude fairly well, which is one of practicality. He does what is needed to get the job done, without grandstanding or rash moves (unlike Deunan). Of course, the fact he cares deeply for Deunan can get him in trouble, hence the complication. In addition, Briareos is fairly even tempered, and hard to anger (or even irritate), and in a game should be the voice of reason and rationality.

Quote: "We're not terrorists. ... Maybe it wasn't the best choice, but you can't turn back the clock now."

Powers/Tactics: First and foremost, Briareos is a cyborg, which means somewhere in excess of 75% of his body is mechanical (I'm betting it's closer to 90%). This means he is very strong (one scene shows him lifting and carrying a 1.5 ton GUGES mecha), fairly fast, very tough, and very durable (Briareos states at one point "It'll take more than a 9mm to stop me." (Note, however, his full-body bullet proofing does have gaps, hence why he only has light impervious). Cybernetic legs and boosters allow him to leap prodigious distances, although his mass makes swimming impossible. (hence the non buoyant drawback)

Briareos also has a few specialized cybernetic systems. One is a series of single-shot guns built into his right arm. There are five barrels (hence the five-shot limitation) and all can be fired at once (thus multifire"). This system isn't very accurate however. Briareos's other specialized system is his sensor array. "Rabbit ears" atop his head contain small cameras that allow him to look around corners or through narrow gaps while keeping the rest of his body out of sight. This was bought as a form of ESP which allows one to make notice checks from a remote point. and since these are attached to him this make shis range 10 ft total (just enough to see around corners) . Also since it is a medium and noticeable, The camera can be seen and damaged.

The rest of Briareos's extensive skill list is based off of sequences from the Appleseed manga, as well as logical projections of what someone who has undergone terrorist and police training would know. Hes similar to deunan in this regard only more experienced and versatile.

Appearance: Before his accident, Briareos was a handsome black man with short black hair and dark eyes. As a cyborg, he's about seven feet tall, with a humanoid physique, and dark brown/bronze "skin." His face has four eyes, and what looks like a central eye (but is actually a respiration grill), and two rabbit ear-like sensory antenna.

Designer's Notes: Most of Briareos's origin notes were taken from the Appleseed Databook, with additional material from Appleseed Book 4. His DEX and initaitive, are based on the fact he's pretty quick as a cyborg, and that he has an auxiliary brain helping him process information (hence his Improved Initiative). His STR was tough, as Shirow tries to keep things fairly "real" in Appleseed. Still, he is seen lifting and leaping while carrying Deunan in her GUGES Landmate, which is said to be "Under 1.5 tons." So A strength of 25 and super strength of 45 seemed about right. I added the Strike ranks to simulate his armored limbs and the power his body gives him when punching or kicking.

Good heavens! PL 11! I had no idea she was so tough. Seeing one or two Appleseed movies, they seemed like regular cops, albeit Futuristic Lasergun Cops. But her stats are sky-high- skills, PL and everything!

I thought about bring her in lower but several times shes shown just going on murder sprees against hordes of opponents and even holding her own against mech suits. Briarios speaks for himself as a full conversion cyborg. So it seemed appropriate though possibly generous I grant you.

Aberrant

Aberrant is a roleplaying game by White Wolf publishers of the World of Darkness and Adventure, and Exalted series. Set in 2008 the game follows the advent of Super humans known as Novas who spontaneously appear after the Galatea station explodes in 1998. The games setting is based on how the public perceives Novas as super stars, or threats and how the Novas themselves deal with their powers, their fame, and the increasing threat of Quantum feedback AKA taint which threatens to turn them into monsters.

Aberrant uses the classic WOD D10 system with players rolling dice pools of D10s trying to hit a target number of successes by rolling 7s or above. Aberrant introduces the concept of Mega Attributes which provide automatic successes on top of additional dice to roll. Novas can have any of a number of super powers and are as strong as their Quantum score which is how powerful they are and governs which powers they can use. Powers are fed by a quantum pool, once this is used Novas can take on damage to get more Q Pool but at a cost of gaining taint.

Aberrants setting is a semi futuristic setting thanks to Novas with mega Intelligence with the aid of the Aeon Society and Project Utopia as well as various corporations employing--some say exploiting-- novas to advance science to incredible levels. Diseases are cured and fossil fuels are rendered obsolete as advances are made.

The story of Aberrant also covers paranoia and conspiracy as Novas must deal with the shadowy manipulations of Project Proteus a shadow organization inside Utopia who takes extreme measure to keep novas under control to protect humanity. this leads to the opening of Aberrant where Popular Nova Jennifer "Slider" Landers is murdered by unknown perpetrators. Her death gives rise to a group known as the Aberrants named after a derogatory term for Novas who fight Proteus and seek to uncover its machinations.

The Terragen a group of Nova Supremacists who believe in a code of setting their own rules as Humankind would not be ruled by Chimpanzees so Novas should not be ruled or bound by human laws. This leads to multiple actions which get the terragen labeled as terrorists by Project Utopias.

Elites become the face of warfare as Novas trained for combat take to the battlefields sparking a Nova Arms race.

Team Tommorow shining example of heroes the world over does its best to protect the world as examples to both Nova and Humankind.

Aberrant is designed to be the middle of the Adventure trilogy of Stories which canonically lead to the horrors of the aberrant war, rise of the Psions, and the Novas leaving the world enmasse for parts unknown.

All told Aberrant can be a fun game to play if you let players have a but of leeway to change the world but at the same time give them bits and pieces of the whole story so that they can make a difference in the shadow and overt conflicts of the world.

Most rules in aberrant remain the same save character creation where I expand a little bit

Extras:

Alternate Effect: By increasing the cost of a power to +1 the Nova can utilize an alternate power similar to the original power but with additional extras without needing to roll Quantum or risk taint. In effect the Nova has become so practiced or skilled with the powers AE that he can use it effortlessly for the appropriate quantum cost. Note this does not protect the nova from strain or taint gained through the powers normal use and the power costs the same as an equivalent effect. it is a free action to switch between Effects.

Each +1 allows up to 2 Alternate effects subject to GMS approval a maximum of +4 Alternate effects may be added in this way. Also it should be noted that ONLY the Main effect can be Super charged per the Super charge rules. The Alternate effects may not be barring GMS approval.

Example: The torch has a Quantum Bolt [Fire] 3 with an alternate Effect extra +1; His alternate effect is a Fireball (Quantum Blast 3 (explosion) he may switch between these as a free action and use either for the same cost.

Special Rule: Force Field and all powers that use random numbers instead use the Fixed Numbers rule So all Force Fields give Quantum +3 Bash/Lethal Soak +2 Bash/Lethal Soak per Quantum point spent to the Maximum of the Force Field Power rank.

Example: A nova with Quantum 3 and Force field 3 activates his Force Field. The Force Field gives him an automatic 6 Soak and then adds in from 2-6 additional soak depending on how much quantum is spent for a maximum of +6 additional. total soak is 8-12 + baseline soak totals.

Description: The character can swim under and on the water at incredible speeds. The character is automatically presumed to have the Water Freedom Body Mod, and cannot fail a swim check unless badly injured. He can swim at a speed of (power rating x 4) + 40 Meters per action in combat. Out of Combat speed is (Quantum + Swimming) x50 KM per hour. No roll is required to swim unless the character wishes to perform some sort of acrobatics or swim long distacnes, a Dex or Strength + Athletics check may be required in these instances. Also a Player may substitute a Dex + Athletics roll for a dodge while swimming which might include explosions and other aoes.

It should be noted that Swimming does NOT automatically presume the character can not drown, or be resistant to the various effects of being in water. A character should have adaptability, or Environmetal Adaptaion (Aquatic), or acclimation (cold) or (pressure) to resist such things.

Aberrant Nova Templates

One of the main issues with Aberrant as a game was that sadly there was a lack of Storyteller tools for the world. Sure there was plenty of story teller fluff but a lot of the important characters were left unstated or vague. Even worse there were almost no ""jobbers"" for the players to fight or deal with. this was partly by design as the games creators presumed that GMs would make their own up, and partly because Novas in general shouldn't necessarily Job, any Nova fight should be a spectacle even if one kicks the others arse roundly up and down the block.

To that end Ive created a group of generic Nova templates that can be modified to suit any GMs taste and easily put in their story as allies, antagonists so on and so forth. just take the template for the character that best suits the NPC in question, then adapt or modify their powers to suit your tastes, add in a name and colorful costume, and background and voila instant Nova.

New Novas are Nova templates for the most part built to starting character specs, these represent either brand new novas who have just finished training and have erupted rather recently, or low powered version AKA street level Novas.

Novas without the New desingaition represent Powerful Novas and/or Novas with a few years experience under their belt


Nova Bricks

Nova Bricks are exactly what they sound like, Big, tough as nails and Strong as an Ox. They hit like a truck and can toss them around pretty easily as well. A lot of Nova Bricks end up in the XWF where they can really cut loose with their strength and get paid for it

Bricks cam be modded by increasing Strength and or Stamina as desired adding more armor or even invulnerability, these guys cna shrug off most small arms fire and even a few heavy weapons shots with little to no damage no sweat.

Nova Scrappers

Nova Scrappers are classic in close fighters red in fang and claw and other such weapons of mayhem. Most scrappers are far more dangerous then their limited non flashy powers would indicate and a lot of these tough fighters end up in the XWF or on the battlefields as well paid elites.

Scrappers can be modded with little effort by adding different Stats and Enhancements, and slight variations in powers. Mostly its a matter of varying HOW they scrap with claws, or high powered martial arts moves or with an Iron Fist.

Similarly Scappers can focus on a large amount of skills and enhancements as opposed to actual powers giving rise to a Batman or Sherlock holmes or Black Widow style of character when backed up by hi-tech gear or weapons.

Nova Blasters

Blasters are a classic archetype and quite a few Novas develop this power set in a staggering variety of ways. Whatever way their blast manifests you can bet itll be flashy and devastating. A lot of these guys and gals tend to develop flashy personalities and are darlings of social media.

Blasters are as easy as scrappers to mod mainly in what they blast and how they get around. Skills, addition mega attributes and enhancements are all good ideas.

Also it should be noted that Blasters are defaulted to shooting from either the Eyes or Hands but this could change depending on your whims as well.So have fun.

Nova Controllers represent the various Elemental and Energy masteries of Novas. These Novas are among the most versatile in regards to how their powers are used and can be just as flashy if not more so then Blasters, and are just as loved by Novaphiles as well.

Nova brains

Nova Brains are exactly as they sound. their Novas whose eruptions gave them tremendous intellect and or wits. It is these Novas in particular who are responsible for the Incredible leaps in technology over the last decade plus since Galatea exploded. Everything from Cures to Cancer, Diabetes, and Leukemia, to The Hyper Combustion engine and the Ion Faraday Drive which in the testing stages may allow humanity to traverse the stars. Advances in robotics and Genetic engineering have healed sicknesses and replaced limbs, people paralyzed by injury or illness can walk again. Soldiers who lsot limbs get back those limbs or replacements so real that they may as well have been born with them.

On the entertainment and information fronts the creation of Eufiber leads to the creation of the Op net a eufiber powered system that moves information hundreds of times faster then older cable networks enabling near instantaneous movement of vast quantities of data.

Ecological updates clean up the worlds oceans and air and water quality thanks to the Zushima microbe which enables clean up of nuclear and toxic and industrial wastes.


Nova Brains are mostly non combatants, their abilities lie in the mental but this does not preclude them from having powers in the physical, its just that their immense intellects are usually better off working on other problems.

Modding a Nova bran is as simple as deciding what flavor of powers the Nova possesses, and where their intellectual interests lie.

Nova Socialites, Performers

Ahh the Glitz and Glamor of Hollywood. Stars bright lights, Action!! This si the world of the Nova Socialite or Perfomer. Not eveyr Nova goes out in a fancy costume to fight crime or clean up the world, or if they do, its done in their own way via music or dance or art. The Nova Socialite is at their best using their natural charisma and beauty to move and shake the world.

Ever hear of the God too beautiful and terrible to behold? that's these guys and gals. they can go just about everywhere and are in high demand for their services such as the Iron Chef whose cooking skills are so in demand that even the British Royal family has an appointment backed up a year, or Skein the Fashion designer second only to Anabel Buendia himself in popularity. Alejandra whose heavenly voice leaves even the most hard core of monsters in tears of joy, or Dazzler whose powers let her put on a one woman lightshow as she rocks out. Too super models that make victorias secret girls look like plain janes.

Also there are the socialites like Count Raoul Orzaiz and Narcosis of the Terragen who hang out with the beautiful people and push the terragens message, or Geisha who does the same for Project Utopia. These Social Powerhouses can bring audiences to their feet with a single word or to tears with a single speech about world hunger.

Nova socialites are one of Aberrants trickier novas to stat and play because its just one small step to near mind control and taking away player agency when a simple nova with mega charisma and manipulation can roll a dozen or more dice for persuasion and starts off with several automatic success. Nova socialites are somewhat simple to modify just choose a set of powers to separate them, add in a specific art or performance medium such as painting, sculpture, cooking or singing and dancing, and voila instant Opnet star and darling of the masses.

Good story hooks can come from having to rescue these stars from ""adoring fans"" or obsessed Nova Stalkers, especially if the players happen to be one of these nova stars. remember the average nova is considered as big as any Hollywood star as is, but these novas take that fame to whole new levels. Nova be warned, here there be Papparazi.
