Re: The Allegiance: Silver Centurion

Post by Davies »

bsdigitalq wrote: Wed Jul 19, 2017 4:55 am The Silver Centurion is the latest in a long line of identities taken by one Casca Longinius. Casca was originally a Roman centurion serving in the province of Judea, when he was asked to perform the crucifixion of three men: a robber, a murderer, and an upstart theocratic leader. But the execution was anything but routine, as violent earthquakes and an unnatural darkness, accompanied by thunder and lightning, came up during the slow death of the three men. Finally, toward the end, he speared the religious leader in the side to end his suffering. Casca did not believe that the man deserved to die, but was committed to his duties. As he carried out his duty, the man reached out and touched Casca and spoke to him. He said that because Casca was content with what he was, so he would remain that way, forever wandering until the day this man returned, just as he was returning "to his father." For a moment, the man's blood fell on Casca's hand, and in an attempt to wipe it off, he tasted it. He immediately began to convulse in pain and collapsed unconscious, but recovered the morning after, seemingly better.
Nice take on the Casca story, making all involved a little less nasty than they've been in other versions.

Jabroniville wrote: Wed Jul 19, 2017 9:08 amI dig the backstory- equal parts tragic and never-ending, with this curse hanging over his head that prevents him from happiness, even in contentment.
Originally, I was gonna go with the sort of standard "flaws of immortality" angle, but I thought, "You know, that's not enough." So I added on the idea of the curse being a sort of "Parker luck" type deal, where he can't ever have anything good happen to him to very long. He has to wander. He can never settle down, never have anything last for him. All good things come to an end, and sooner than he'd like. Very much a Byronic hero, along the lines of Guts from Berserk, but in a less grimdark setting.
Davies wrote: Thu Jul 20, 2017 2:39 amNice take on the Casca story, making all involved a little less nasty than they've been in other versions.
Heh, funny how that happens. I've traditionally been influenced by more darker, grim settings than the traditional four-color superheroics, which I've always been annoyed by personally. And yet things come off as a bit lighter and more traditional than intended. Heh, goes to show how execution does not necessarily follow intention and expectation.

Glad you liked, in any case. :)

Anyway! That's it for the Allegiance! Now next is SHE- Super-Heroines of Earth! In the middle of building the ladies right now, so look for them this weekend!

SHE: Super-Heroines of Earth

Post by bsdigitalq »

Image

Another notable group that Thunder Woman sometimes associates with is the Super-Heroines of Earth, or SHE for short. As might be obvious, they are an international group of solely female superheroes who mix in their traditional superheroic activities with a healthy dose of campaigning for female empowerment and fighting against activities or practices harmful to women all across the world. Naturally, this additional dose of sociopolitical activism makes them highly controversial, and they get regularly criticized from both sides of the aisle. Thus, Samantha, who is fairly allergic to activism and social justice movements herself, has not accepted Justrix's offer to join them, although that doesn't prevent her from occasionally helping them out with more traditional heroic situations.

Reputation (Member of SHE)- Because of their more overtly "feminist" angle, SHE is a highly controversial group around the world, and this extends to its individual members.

Rivalry (Blacksmith)- Ellen and Blacksmith are often compared in terms of "who is the better tech hero". Sometimes Power Knight is included in these comparisons.

Total: Abilities: 64 / Skills: 54--27 / Advantages: 18 / Powers: 42 / Defenses: 19 (170)

Ellen Wrench is the resident tech head and youngest member of SHE, hailing from a background in rural Nebraska. Full of that fiery, brash confidence younger folk can be possessed of, she's well known as being one of very best "gadgeteer" type heroes in the world. So great is her technical expertise and smarts that it completely overshadows the fact that she actually has a genuine superpower- the ability to generate pocket dimensions to put in and pull out stuff at any time no matter where she is. Naturally, this means she has instant access to a huge panoply of gadgets, tools, and weapons (like her signature giant wrench), all made by her.

Initiative +4

Defenses:
Dodge +10 (DC 20), Parry +10 (DC 20), Toughness +3 (+14 w/Force Field), Fortitude +7, Will +14

Complications:

Enemies (Children of Ares)- The Children, as spawn of Ares, generally epitomizes traits that the High Priestess firmly opposes. However, the main source of their enmity is the role she played in helping to end their involvement against Thunder Woman.

Enemies (The Crusaders)- While the High Priestess epitomizes and strives for the empowerment of women, the extremism of the female members of the Crusaders is anathema to her, as she emphasizes love in her endeavors, not wounded hate like they do.

Enemy (Earthgrave)- The undead Native American dark shamaness is a frequent adversary of the High Priestess and something of a dark mirror to her.

Enemies (Entities of the Infernal Realms)- One of the High Priestess' objectives is cleansing this reality of corruptive influences that hold back humanity and women, and anything from the Infernal Realms certainly qualifies. Malphas, the Demoniac, and Apollyon, amongst others, most certainly qualify.

Enemy (Lady Oudine)- Overthrow's second in command and mystic powerhouse is an archrival of the High Priestess.

Enemy (Marek al-Dajjal)- Marek's goal of bringing forth and empowering Ahriman, the decidedly male personification of the aspect of evil, is absolutely the kind of thing the High Priestess was meant to stop.

Enemy (The New Inquisition)- While the New Inquisition is anti-extraordinary across the board, the Grand Inquisitor Magnus Mortarion holds a special kind of loathing for all mystics and magical practitioners, and thanks to his misogynistic streak, doubly so for female mystics like the High Priestess.

Enemy (The Secret Shadows)- The Secret Shadows work to exploit all forms of magical power and influence for their own purposes, including the Feminine Divine. Their leader, Moloch, has repeatedly attempted to find a way to co-opt the High Priestess' power for his own uses.

Enemies (The Tarnished Ones)- The mindless manic abominations from the edge of reality are bad news no matter what, and as someone with the ability to travel to the places where these things travel, the High Priestess is in a unique place to stop them before they even reach Earth.

Power Loss (Feminine Divine)- With the exception of the Caduceus Staff, the High Priestess draws all of her power from the patronage of the goddesses that compose the Feminine Divine. Without them she loses all of her spellcasting ability (as most of the spells that she uses are otherwise circumstantial in nature). Examples of situations where this would happen include if she were sent to a dimension beyond the realms her patrons exist in, or if Earth's dimension were in some way cut off from the rest of reality, or if any of the dieties that empower her were somehow disabled or destroyed.

Power Loss (Spellcasting)- Magic in general is dependent upon a series of actions designed to either rewrite reality or exploit some sort of glitch in it, which is part of the reason why magic is so weird and esoteric (the other lies within the cultural, historical, and religious contexts in which these practices developed). This means that anything that might restrain a specific aspect of these spells, such as uttering a particular set of sounds or making certain physical gestures, will prevent magical practitioners from using certain spells.

Relationship (The Golden Dawn)- Though not a member, the High Priestess is an ally of the new incarnation of the Golden Dawn, and their goals mutually align.

Relationship (Justrix)- The High Priestess is most in tune with Justrix out of the entirety of SHE, as Justrix epitomizes a lot of the beliefs and practices that the High Priestess is meant to to symbolize and protect. Had someone like Lady Winter approached her, she might have refused to join the group, believing its mission to not be "sincere."

Relationship (Madame Blavatsky)- Aeon's wife is a powerful magical practitioner herself, and the closest thing the High Priestess has to a friend.

Relationship (The Pentacle)- The High Priestess does her best to keep in contact with all the major power players in the mystic community, and her membership in the Pentacle is a part of that, allowing her to coordinate with these people in a way that would be more difficult if she had to reach out to them individually.

Relationship (Thunder Woman)- Samantha epitomizes to the High Priestess everything that she is striving to achieve, even if she had no involvement in the creation or shaping of Thunder Woman. Plus, they both share a link in the form of the goddess Athena.

Reputation (Member of SHE)- Because of their more overtly "feminist" angle, SHE is a highly controversial group around the world, and this extends to its individual members.

Reputation (Mysterious)- Not a lot is actually known about the High Priestess outside of the magical community. Even her cohorts in SHE know very little about her and where she came from or what she really does.

Responsibility (Champion of the Feminine Divine)- Beyond any other duty or responsibility, the one thing that the High Priestess must keep in mind is that she is the chosen champion of the Feminine Divine. Her power is ultimately not her own, and comes with a mission to protect and empower women all across the world. If the Feminine Divine believe that she is no longer worthy, or that she is straying too far from her mission, they can easily take it away from her and choose another in her stead.

Rivalry (Black Rose, Lady Gyre, Sister Salem)- While they are not villains and so not overt enemies of the High Priestess, many of the other major female magic practitioners don't necessarily get along with her, or are often compared to her by the extraordinary enthusiast community, even down to the question of "Who's Hotter?"

Rivalry (Lady Winter)- While the High Priestess gets along well enough with the rest of SHE, the one members she likes the least is Lady Winter. She does not believe Winter to be genuine or sincere in her participation in the group for one second, and believes that this lack of conviction in SHE's overall goal of promoting female empowerment will only lead to the group's downfall.

Total: Abilities: 66 / Skills: 92--46 / Advantages: 31 / Powers: 144 / Defenses: 18 (305)

The High Priestess is a major arcane practitioner and mystical guardian. She is the champion of an order of female deities known as the Feminine Divine, with a mission to restore and preserve the elements of the magical order natural to the feminine spirit. She operates out of her own pocket dimension, which includes a library of ancient texts and grimoires, artifacts and items of power, and a prison where she keeps all the threats she subdues. Beyond this, she is also the leader and figurehead of an international charity organization that is part of a front for an ancient order of women who serve the Feminine Divine.

Out of all of SHE's members, she is the least known and most mysterious, despite not acting like it. However, as SHE continues to function and become more well known, that may change over time.

Interesting- you went with this instead of just Dimensional Movement plus lots of Equipment. Can she not enter her portal at all?

I'm digging the "semi-useful powers" aspect (too few Scientists are either Powersuit Guys or useless fighters), and her brassy attitude, which gives off a "Rosie the Riveter" vibe.

Cool! Gives off a very "Storm" vibe, which is unavoidable given the skin/hair combination, I suppose. Much higher INT than most Wizards, and her Skills are through the roof, too- this is a very "Dr. Strange"-level character.

Interesting how her powers are very "Nullify"-based over causing raw damage, until you get to that Staff. Wait... "Feminine Divine"? This have something to do with Christine Hendricks's proportions :)?

Which Goddesses comprise the Feminine Divine?

I find it amusing that almost all the female mystics don't get along- it's like that old joke about women in the workplace :).

Yeah, I've noticed. Ellen here is an old, old character of mine who has gone through many variations, though in general the concept of a "super-powered grease monkey super genius" remained the same throughout.
Interesting- you went with this instead of just Dimensional Movement plus lots of Equipment. Can she not enter her portal at all?
No, she cannot. She can only stick her hand in and "sort" her dimensional pockets so she gets what she wants. Kind of like a video game character in a lot of ways.
I'm digging the "semi-useful powers" aspect (too few Scientists are either Powersuit Guys or useless fighters), and her brassy attitude, which gives off a "Rosie the Riveter" vibe.
Yeah, a lot of her appeal is rooted in that- out of my characters back in the day, she was a favorite among my friends because she tended to have more personality than most of my other characters.
Jabroniville wrote: Sun Jul 23, 2017 6:55 amCool! Gives off a very "Storm" vibe, which is unavoidable given the skin/hair combination, I suppose.
Pretty much. There will be a similar situation when I get around to my actual Storm analogue, Corona, although her's will be more of a golden blonde than straight up white like HP here.
Much higher INT than most Wizards, and her Skills are through the roof, too- this is a very "Dr. Strange"-level character.
Yeah, in some ways she's more of a Dr. Strange equivalent for my setting than my actual Dr. Strange analogue, Aeon. Quite funny how these things tend to pan out.
Interesting how her powers are very "Nullify"-based over causing raw damage, until you get to that Staff.
That's part of the whole theme, that her actual magical skills are all based on less on strictly combat-style powers and more stuff like healing and protecting, with her counters to aspects she opposes straight up wiping that stuff away instead of merely harming it.
Wait... "Feminine Divine"? This have something to do with Christine Hendricks's proportions :)?
Ha! lol, just me trying to come up with a cool name for this order of female deities she answers to, instead of just "an order of various goddesses."
Which Goddesses comprise the Feminine Divine?
I haven't entirely figured that out yet. Athena for sure is among them, but the rest is kind of up in the air right now. No Celtic deities though- they're all backing Lady Gyre.
I find it amusing that almost all the female mystics don't get along- it's like that old joke about women in the workplace :).
Yeah, that's where the notion comes from. Also, that each of these ladies tends to represent branches of magic that aren't compatable, and that lack of compatability affects their personal interactions.

Rivalry (Afterburner)- Both Rita and Chris come from the same general background of people who used their powers to become sports stars before entering the hero community. They have both competed against one another in multiple events, both in terms of flying races and exhibition competitions. Even now that they are both semi-retired, they still occasionally participate in charity events or stoke the fires of the rivalry for their fans.

Jetstream the stage name and heroic identity of one Rita Valdez. Rita is an international celebrity from South America who originally trained to be a pilot in her youth, initially to take over her father's charter flight business, but instead became an emergency helicopter pilot for several regional hospitals. Her powers manifested when a microburst slammed into her helicopter during a routine flight, sending her plummeting to her death. However, the manifestation of her ability to project propulsive force from her body allowed her to survive the crash. The stories of what happened soon spread, and she became known as "Menina Milagrosa," or "Miracle Girl."

She took advantage of her new powers to help out the hospitals by becoming a living emergency flight-lift and rescuer, until she was approached by a businessman who admired her talents. He proposed that she attend a local air show he was putting on and demonstrate her powers to the attendees, which included a number of international tourists. Unsure about the whole thing, she still accepted it, and the event went off much better than she thought it would. Soon, "Jetstream" became a worldwide sensation with her spectacular stunts, and it was this celebrity that attracted Lady Winter to her with an offer to join SHE, which still needed a household name to elevate their reputation. Rita had taken to supporting various charities to help out girls and women around the world, and saw herself as an example for all young girls to look up to, and she considered SHE to be an extension of this. Thus, she accepted Lady Winter's offer and joined the team, moving from daredevil sports celebrity to official heroine.

Complications:

Disability (Blindness)- Lillian is completely blind. She is unable to see colors, people outside the range of her gravity radar, cannot discern people's races or backgrounds without clues like accents, and cannot read anything on a computer or smartphone. If her tactile gravity radar were ever nullified, she would be completely Unaware of her surroundings.

Enemy (The Crusaders)- Lillian turned down an offer to join the extreme leftist extraordinary terrorist group over philosophical differences. They haven't forgiven her for that, and target SHE out of petty vengeance and spite.

Enemy (Glory and the Seven Sinners)- One of Justrix's early, pre-SHE enemies was the invulnerable villainness Glory. Now that Glory is possessed by the spirit Superbia and gathered together a cadre of similarly possessed villains, the Seven Sinners are now an enemy of Justrix, and by extension SHE.

Motivation (Female Empowerment)- Justrix is very much a feminist, and strives greatly to inspire and empower women all across the world, especially those in the most hardcore of oppressive areas on Earth.

Reputation (Member of SHE)- Because of their more overtly "feminist" angle, SHE is a highly controversial group around the world, and this extends to its individual members. This goes doubly for Justrix, what with her being the leader and figurehead of the group.

Total: Abilities: 56 / Skills: 76--38 / Advantages: 19 / Powers: 98 / Defenses: 19 (230)

Justrix is Lillian Thomas. She was blind at birth, and has never experienced what sight and vision is. However, her gravity manipulation powers manifested at a young age, and one of the things she instinctively learned was how to use her powers to "feel" everything around her or at a distance. This allowed her to function semi-normally, and gave her an affinity for things with working parts, like engines and clocks. She attended the Xidorn International Extraordinary Academy, where she expanded upon her natural talent for engineering. But it was in a Justice & Criminology course at the Academy that she began to develop a sense of purpose, inspired in part by the popular depiction of justice as a blindfolded woman, based on the Roman goddess Justitia. Lillian identified with the goddess due to her blindness, and shifted her priorities toward a career in heroism.

As the heroine Justrix, Lillian began to develop a sense of discontent with the hero community. She felt that that there was more that heroes could do, that too many were just content to battle villains and rogue extraordinaries and leave it at that. She also witnessed the difficulty many women had around the world, and was inspired when many women began to look up to her. This culminated in a chance team up with the British heroine Lady Winter, who was inspired by Justrix's strong sense of purpose in heroes as powerful symbols and instruments of social change. Together they founded SHE and gathered together like minded heroines from around the world, forming a powerful inspirational force for women all across Earth.

JETSTREAM (Rita Valdez)
PL 10 (186)
I like the outfit- it cries "speed" and "stunt-person" with the helmet and goggles and all that.

JUSTRIX (Lillian Thomas)
PL 11
The look here to me says "Urban Vigilante", especially the scales of justice. A solid little design- simple yet effective. Seeing a bunch of Gravity Powers was surprising, but I've always felt that was an under-utilized power set-up in comics.

I find some of these origins a bit interesting- people just GAINING powers, either by simple accidents or what appear to be Mutant-ish origins.

One of my personal favorites that I've done, actually.

I appreciate the inherent simplicity of the mutant concept, where people are effectively born with powers, rather than gaining them through some convoluted events.
