On Changeling:

Lots of people think that Changeling is bright and cheerful, the lighter side of the old World of Darkness. While it can certainly be played that way, Vampires can also be tragically hip and Werewolves raging killmonsters. Changeling goes deeper, an interplay between Glamour and Banality. Can you keep a sense of potential, hope and imagination around you when the world is trying to drive you down into a bleak grayness?

One of the big elements in the metaplot is that somewhere in the Age of Reasoning, humanity started turning away from creativity and Changeling started starving, finding ways to put on a human guise and hiding out. Some of the nobles (the sidhe) hunkered down with the commoners and waited for things to blow over. They became the Autumn sidhe. Others went screw this, I'm out of here, see ya! and went back into the Dreaming, becoming the Arcadian sidhe. They started coming back when humanity looked on with wonder as man walked on the moon and creativity flooded back into the world.. or something. These returned Arcadian sidhe kicked human souls out and took over.. and then proceeded to violently demand that they given back what they had abandoned.

For those of you who are curious, another big influx on the darker changelings have started coming back since September 11, 2001. This strikes me as a bit of creator provincialism. Did that event really affect the entire world in the same way as going to the moon?

Unnamed Slaugh revolutionary (Amos Osher?)

I've been spinning my wheels on this one for too long and not getting much of anywhere. Better out than in. Production before perfection. All that rot.

The long thin hands idly rattled the cold iron manacles. It wasn't an escape attempt more exercising the spider like digits.

The voice was barely more than a whisper. "It was a matter of time. I am not going to stop until I have been slain. Even then, I am a martyr. Stories of my deeds shall chime through every trod, reminding people of what they can do. That they can stand against the invaders. You ask me how I can do these things. This shows that you are young and foolish. How can I not do these things knowing what I know? You say that I murdered innocents. Yes, this saddens me that they did were so..empty that they did not think for themselves. They made their choices. For evil to flourish, it only requires good men to do nothing. They made their choices. The young you say? Would you think twice of removing maggots infesting healthy flesh? Myiasis."

"You wish for me to tell you a story and I shall do so. Once there was a good land. I do not claim that it was perfect, for there are fools and knaves everywhere. Instead, I shall say that there were many good people. They tried to live together. Sometimes they succeeded. At other times they failed. Yet, they made the attempt. There was one beautiful day, they gazed up into the skies and were thankful. Then They came. The invaders. The rapists. The murderers. They came and demanded that the land surrender all that it had worked towards. The people of the land were willing to offer some, to make the newcomers feel welcome. It was not enough. It would never be enough until all was devoured."

"So many laid down their arms. They gave in. They surrendered. They wanted peace over justice. Some few continue to fight, remembering what was and what can be again. I have had to learn many ways of wage war. The situation has demanded it."

"You are a fool. Perhaps not, you are young. You have never known freedom. I still fight for you. I shall die for you to be free."

I think that the best possible description of Changeling came from a conversation with one of my friends. He told me that his biggest problem with the game was that he really couldn't wrap his head around one thing: were the Changelings actual supernatural beings or just a bunch of people sufferring from a form of mass allucination?
My answer was: "If you have this doubt, then you really didn't get what the game is about."

I was unaware of this plot element and I have to agree that it's kind of hard to wrap my head around it. Some historians think that 9/11 was a pivotal moment because it defined most of the political and social landscape of the past 17 years, but I agree that reeks of provicialism. If 9/11 was that important the siege of Sarajevo should have swung the gates of Arcadia wide open over Europe.
In general creator provicialism was a very prominent trait of White Wolf games, with very few exceptions everything meaningful from the 16th century onward happened in North America. Europe was perceived as a continent stuck into power struggles older than mud. Africa and South America was hardly a factor until pretty late down the line. Asia was its own separate world. Oceania didn't amount to jackshit.
"You're right. Sorry. Holy shit," I breathed, "heckhounds.”

Yep, it was added in the new 20th Anniversary 'kitchen sink' edition. It contains all the basic kith, inanimae, merfolk, Hawaiian, Eastern, Native American, Thallians, Autumn folk, as well as numerous previously unofficial kiths.

And yet, it doesn't contain the flaw Hatred.

I've been giving some thought on where to go next. There's waaaay too much stuff on the dusty shelves and in the hopefully not so dusty harddrive that I could go to. Some of the game systems would come down to problems with notability or with complexity. Do I really want to spend time learning a system that nobody else has heard of? Or one that takes a freakin' spreadsheet to compute?

Any thoughts on what people would like to see?

F.A.T.A.L. Fantasty Adventure to Adult Lechery The Most Difficult, Detailed, Realistic, and Historically/Mythically Accurate Role-Playing Game Available

If you've been around gaming for any time at all, you've heard of this one as the putrid piece of crap it is. If you haven't, look it up, I won't bore you with the details and yes, it is as horrible as they say. We don't need to talk about it here. I recently came across a Youtube channel talking about how difficult and time consuming it is to create a character. Rather than listening to my better judgement, I decided to take a look myself and have to agree, this is just part of the pile of troll dung. However, I also think that character creation could be handled easily by computer generation. Give it a few choices and send it on its merry way rather than wasting the player's time with a hundred dice rolls.

However, for those of you that are morbidly curious, it goes a little like this.

Math: drop decimals- which can become painfully important in this process.

Chapter 1: Abilities
Abilities: Physique, Charisma, Dexterity, Intelligence, Wisdom- which four subabilities each.
Generation: roll (4d100/2)-1 (Optional rule: roll [{5d100 drop one}/2]-1) for each subability (in order)- 80!? rolls, kinda puts Palladium in perspective. Each ability is then calculated as the average of the subabilities under it. Time to put a spreadsheet to work
Charts: 1 chart for each subability which goes on to give more and more detail about your character.
Complications: But we can't forget 'retard strength' which if your intelligence is low enough gives you a choice a) reroll the subabilities or b) boost a physique subability, which in turn changes the ability and could change your place in the tables.

Chapter 2: Gender and Race
Gender: Pick male or female. Adjust subabilities, recalculate abilities, refresh charts. Note changes to disposition and temperament.

Race: Pick one of 16 races. Adjust subabilities, recalculate abilities, refresh charts. Note changes to disposition and temperament. Note changes to life points, skills and occupation limitations.

It's about this point where I started to wonder.. why not pick gender and race first and avoid the recalculations? Is there a trollish desire for people to look up tables over and over again? If not trollish, how did they ever consider this a good idea?

Chapter 3: Body (or this is the part your gaming friends warned you about, prepare the brain bleach)
So we begin this chapter with the normal sorts of things (which of course have to be randomly rolled rather than picked); age, lifespan, height, weight. Weight bogs down, requiring adjustments for height and strength. Getting back on track, most attractive/repulsive feature (on the same table), skin color (adjusted by race, ranging from people thinking that they are undead to 'laborer'), hair color (by race), hair length, hair thickness and type (determined by gender and race), eye color (again by race), vision (near and far sightedness), facial features (with presumed characteristic).

And now we get into the (totally optional, right?) sexual features: areola diameter (adjusted by gender and race), areola hue, cup size (adjusted based on age but not gender?), nipple length (adjusted by gender and race), vaginal circumference potential (race and age), vaginal depth potential (based on height), tongue size (race), anal circumference potential (age and race). This is followed by a discussion of ripped orifice, hymen resistance, pregnancy likelihood, menstruation, infant mortality rate... Manhood length (height, (4d100/2-1)).

Further optional aspects: Foot size (height, gender and race), fist circumference (based on foot size), handedness, head circumference (gender, race, with odd restrictions on what hats will fit you and how), huge section on how horribly pregnancy is including dropping bodily attractiveness to.. 0? *peers over at Jab, shakes head*

If your Health subability isn't high enough, check for allergies... Huge departure here for discussion of in game effects of drugs and diseases. Evidently some conditions are considered diseases... diabetes, muscular dystrophy, tourette's??

It was around here that I gave up on trying to create a character, playing with Excel for hours on end just isn't that much fun.

Chapter 4: Disposition
The game's alignment system (moral vs ethical). First you have to figure out piety points, which include factors such as age, multiple subabilities (attractive and healthy give you negative modifiers) and again race and a roll. Option rule that if you want to reroll, you can acquire random allergies. Nice charts, pie and bar demonstrating how much of the population falls where.. in black and white which is so helpful for 9 different selections! And long winded discussions on how this system works in practice. And more pages. And more. 22 in all. At least this troll dung takes this area.. seriously?

Chapter 5: Mind
Temperaments (7 pages) Roll d100 for each of the temperaments, adjust by gender and race. Pick the highest two, ignore the rest.
Mental Illness: Freud would be proud! Lots of status affecting elements here that can change the rest of the character sheet. More chart recalculation!

Bored now. Need brain bleach application.

Asked and answered :P

I'm not sure if it's the worst rpg ever written. I'm not saying it's good, I'm saying that there are others that are very bad. I might even do some builds for those. Some are the works of trolls, others are well intentioned but so very misguided. I have an aunt that believes that all pillows need to have pockets (for books?) and a button to hold it together. She also believes that everything needs to have a swatch of orange. She once sent my father a photo of a lovely err.. outhouse. The love is felt but wow, she has no artistic sense. There can also be treasure in trash, something so horrible, so outlandish, that somehow it has its own beauty. The 'Jack in the Box taco' theorey.

Also, I'm a numberphile; I love the way that they dance. This.. this was not numbers frolicking, this was them doing mechanical twerking.. while weeping.

System: Changeling 20

Tessa Fowler. Kate Upton and Christina Lucci were also inspirations. General NSFW warning if you decide to look any of them up.

Name: Rose Maye
Concept: Manic (Satyr) Dream Girl
Seeming: Wilder, Kith: Satyr, Court: Seelie, Legacies: Troubador, Knave

Willpower: 4, Glamour: 5, Banality: 3

Str 1; Dex 4 (Slinky); Sta 4 (Tireless)
Cha 4 (Outgoing), Man 2, App 4 (Captivating)
Per 2, Int 2, Wits 2

Talents: Athletics 3, Empathy 3, Expression 2, Kenning 3, Leadership 4 (Friendly)
Skills: Animal Ken 3, Melee 3, Performance 4 (Erotic)
Knowledges: Academics 1, Computers 1, Law 1, Medicine 1, Technology 1

Backgrounds: Dreamers 3, Resources 3, Retinue 1

Arts: Metamorphosis 2, Oneiromancy 2
Realms: Actor 3, Fae 2, Prop 1

Merits: Friendly Face, Surreal Beauty, Good Listener, Higher Purpose (Spread Love), Natural Leader
Flaws: Impatient, Soft Hearted, Changelings Eyes (Startling Blue), Bizzare Quality

A. Manic Pixie Dreamgirl is a TV tropes term for those female characters that pull a stodgy male character into a world of wild and whimsy. I'm taking that a step further with Rose. If she's on the Seelie side (Troubadour), things usually turn out and our hero protagonist gets a new outlook on life and a new direction. If she's on the Unseelie side (Knave), things get messy and the guy is left in a disaster.

B. Rose is also a sex worker. I haven't decided what that actually means but leaning heavily towards her being a cam girl. In that case, her Retinue represents a tech (Gary? Brenda?) that she has helped but he hasn't left her. In any case, the Dreamers represent people that she is currently helping free themselves.

C. Growth plans: She may pick up a point in Title and be asked to join House Fiona. I was considering adding Naming so that she could talk with animals but the realm cost was way too high. Metamorphosis 3 so that she can start turning into animals and eventually fantastic creatures. Oneiromancy so that she could spend more time in dreams, becoming literally a dream girl (maybe too anime?). Melee specialization would become impromptu weapons- I like the idea of flying frying pans or lamps.

Well, he’s an Ahroun, yes, meaning his Rage should be high, but Rage of an 8 seems a bit much for a Rank 1 cub. 6 sounds about right, to me. Now, if he’s Rank 3+, then yes, Rage 8 is perfect.

Keep in mind the frenzy rules talk about a nasty thing called “Thrall of the Wyrm”, in which you go into a batshit insane frenzy...and, when you wake back up, you’ve acquired a body count that may include your allies and family. Rolling too well with Rage is, in and of itself, a problem.
I had adjusted his stats to be a bit more reasonable. Thanks!

- Sheldon Carlysle - a club owner who I patterned way too much off of Tony Todd's character in the Crow. He was Ventrue.

Having not read the rules for every roleplaying game ever made, I can't say it is the worst. But I can say it is the worst I've ever heard of or encountered.

For me it was a morbid sense of 'can it really be as bad as I've heard' (answer: yes) combined with being, as Spectrum put it, a numberphile.

I will admit to being somewhat in awe of it, in that it is so detailed, and math heavy, and yet still so horribly perverse. I find myself thinking that the creator of the game must be good with using his calculator with one hand.

Oh, and if there are any really curious numberphiles out there, or maybe any masochists, PM for more details.

I'm not sure if you're to admire or what, I tried to read F.A.T.A.L. once, but I had to stop very soon ... I didn't even come close to looking at the system, the setting alone killed everything for me. This was not misguided writing, in my opinion, it was a full on attempt from someone to unleash his own sick fantasies upon the world and shove them down the throats of many unsuspecting gamers.

Now, I know that this can be said of a lot of writers (not just RPG writers), but the way this one did is so ... I don't even know a word to express it. If we take a good long look at amny beloved settings there are elements of personal power fantasy (e.g. Elminister in Forgotten Realms), but F.A.T.A.L. isn't a power fantasy. It's a sick and deranged way for someone to try some for of self-justification for a series of inexcusable rape fantasies.

Tanya was my fav. She was the center of a Chronicle with a Sidhe lesser noble. I had Tanya be the reincarnation of Scathach n Uaniand - the obvious problem is that she’s a Troll. So not only was a Troll the reincarnation of the founder of a Sidhe House, she was the reincarnation of a founder of a house that remained in the interregnum.

Does this work in the framework of Changeling? We made it work because it was a damn fun campaign hook. In fact, it was a solo campaign and the other character (the only “real” PC) was a full-blooded Sidhe and discovered Tanya’s secret – and made it her personal goal to reinstate the Troll’s title and honor.

The really neat thing was when the PC commissioned a weapon for Tanya - a freaking chimerical Great Maul.

AMBER Diceless Role-Playing, Phage Press 1991

Image

So, a confession first, I have attempted to read the Amber novel series, many years ago, and didn't successfully get very far into it. I don't recall way, just that I didn't get very far with it. On the other hand, I picked up the main book and the first supplement for the RPG. At the time, there was a lot of talk about it, being one of the earlier (gaming) mainstream attempts at a diceless roleplaying game. In some ways, it's a really cool game and was very innovative for the market at the time, shifting the stories towards being far more open than what could be told at the time. Wow, playing god level characters was really cool too... gods that could walk across multiple worlds!

And so it went onto the dusty bookshelf.

I randomly grabbed it the other day with the intention of making a character... and soon ran into a problem. I've mentioned the problem of really needing to bounce characters off of other players and the GM to get a good fit into the campaign world. Amber takes these problems and works them into the game mechanics. While it doesn't really let me work on a character, I think that some nifty concepts are in there.

Each character starts off with 100 points. Pretty standard there. The first major oddity comes in the way that you spend those points. Four attributes: Psyche, Strength, Endurance and Warfare. Rather than out and out buying your attributes, each one has a auction in which you are bidding for your relative position for that attribute. So if Alice outbids Bob outbids Chris on Strength, Alice will always be stronger than Bob, even if with later experience they get the same score.. and Bob can never spend more than Alice. Lots of extra detail in there that I'm glossing over. I think that this has a couple of wrinkle effects. It puts players into competition from the get go, not just niche protection but active niche competition. It also makes outside characters, whether NPCs or new PCs, truly on the outside, making it difficult to compare them against established characters. Given that you're playing the next generation of the cannon characters, yeah... odd. There are also levels of Amber (free), Chaos (gives back a few points) and Human (that gives back lots of points) for each attribute.

After the auctions are done, you can spend your points on powers and 'extras'. Extras are a nifty concept, allowing you to build allies/contacts, your own world, magic devices and companions to fit your concept.

Balancing the points is another intriguing (I need to get a thesaurus) step. On one hand, you have player contributions, various artistic endeavours (logging, writing stories or poetry, drawing pictures, etc.) that you're responsible for on the length of the campaign in return for points. What do you have the time and interest in doing to further develop the game? I can see this being extended to other activities around the game, hosting, bringing snacks, etc. for some groups.

Finally, there is the concept of 'good stuff' and 'bad stuff' to round out your points. On an easy level, its a form of luck. On another, it puts a spin on all of the characters interactions with the world- how they perceive things, how the world perceives them. It's an entire filter for that character's for that time and place.

Experience is another odd place. Rather than spending your experience points, you make suggestions to the GM on what direction/s you would like to go and they don't need to tell you where are at that point. The GM can also add good stuff and bad stuff as you go. Lots more bookkeeping for the GM, but it can also add a level of narrative uncertainty that I find appealing.

Has anyone ever actually played the game? What did they think? Were the odd bits fun or were they a pain?

Along the way, I've been sketching out my character concept. For Melfony, I was thinking of bidding high in Psyche, drop a significant amount into Good Stuff and contacts and the ability to reach out to those other characters. I do like playing social characters.
