I thought of that gag a month ago- I couldn't resist :). I never know when it's too far, though... I've worked too hard to build a reputation of being a clean-minded, upstanding person with no weird fetishes- I'd hate to ruin that for the sake of a joke!

Iris in Mythology: Iris is the respresentation of rainbows, and is the Messenger of Hera, effectively a low-grade version of Hermes. She is the daughter of Thaumas (a Sea God) and the Oceanid Electra, and acted as the messenger of the Gods during the Titanomachy, pre-dating Hermes by years. Her sister Arke was the Messenger of the Titans during the same war. Though Hermes more or less takes her job, she is in charge of grabbing the water of the River Styx, by which the Gods swear unbreakable oaths. She marries Zephyrus, the West Wind, but doesn't get up to much in the Myths beyond running interference for Hera in "The Aenid".

-Iris is the Goddess of the Rainbow, and daughter of one of the Sea Spirits (Thaumas) with an Oceanid (Electra). Born with great teleportation powers (appearing as rainbow-like energy patterns), she was an excellent messenger, and took the side of the Olympians during the Titanomachy. For her role, she was given a powerful job, close to the Gods themselves- a Messenger/Administrator position. Among the least-powerful and most humbly-origin'd beings allowed regular access to the elites of the Empire, she became highly desired by mortals, who frequently attempted to bribe her to get close to the Gods- controlling the schedule of a powerful person makes YOU nearly equally as powerful, after all. And so Iris became quite wealthy. It didn't hurt that she know most of the Gods's business, and so most of them bribed her to keep secrets.

-However, she would get rebuked from time to time for over-doing it (she IS of low-birth compared to most Olympians, after all), and was eventually supplanted as primary Messenger by Hermes, who was born centuries later. Despite that setback, Iris was still fantastically wealthy, and is extremely hard-working, as the personal assistant to Hera. Her access to Hera in particular, and her knowledge of all Hera's secrets, makes her worth bribing, and her status as a "Girl Friday" to the Queen of the Gods is still extremely desirable, and allows for a constant stream of wealth. These days, Iris is careful not to take too much advantage of her power, but is well-paid, given that she could unravel Hera's plans in a moment (not that anyone would ever want to get on Hera's bad side).

-The Gods (particularly Athena) thus view Iris with a combination of suspicion and derision- she's not a powerful fighter, isn't of high birth, and doesn't have a major function in the Empire. However, she's highly-feared as an information broker, an accessory to Hera ("hold your tongue- IRIS is listening!"), and someone who knows everyone's business. Her attitude is a mix of overly-haughty and looking down on others, with authentic curiosity and a "go-getter" attitude that makes her a good employee. She is respectful, even fawning, to Hera, but expects to be treated with dignity and respect- Hera, knowing Iris's worth, is actually willing to give a little, as well. Both beings know each other very well over the centuries, and though they aren't "friends" exactly, they both know the benefit they are to each other, and wouldn't think to betray one another.

-Iris lacks battlefield power, but her mastery of the "Rainbow" (technically the energy that the Norse Gods utilize to travel between Asgard and Earth- the Bifrost "Rainbow Bridge") means she can tie up adversaries, and travel nearly anywhere.

Jab's Notes: One of the most important things to learn in business is that "Secretaries Know Everything"- the worst person in the universe to piss off is the most-experience secretary at any given workplace, because that person will always know EVERYTHING- where the bodies are buried, who is committing tax evasion/fraud, who's cheating, who's having a workplace romance, etc. They are the ultimate information brokers, and anyone who's any good at their job knows this. Pro wrestler Antonio Inoki, for example, nearly sank his entire career by firing a secretary with years of experience (because she was loyal to a partner of his that he'd split with)- she immediately ran to the press with a list of every crime he'd ever committed, ruining him in the public eye.

-It's with that knowledge that comes Iris, whom I'd been thinking of for a time, but had no idea for. Iris, as a Messenger Goddess, basically knows everyone's business, and is supposed to do the "legwork" that the Gods just don't have the time for. A job that could be quite thankless... if she didn't know EVERYONE's business, which meant she was worth bribing. I didn't want her to be treated like this sinister betrayer, however- just one that COULD be dangerous if crossed. I also love the "Loyal #2" trope which was so common on Disney's "Gargoyles"- Iris is effectively the "Owen" for Hera- acting as a sounding board for ideas, a magnet for exposition ("You SEE, Iris, this is my plan--"), and the eyes and ears of the boss.

Leto in Mythology: Leto is known in Mythology primarily for birthing Apollo & Artemis- two of the most important Gods. Laying with Zeus, she went into hiding from Hera, and birthed the twins, then largely disappeared from the narrative. Her name sort of means "demure" or "hiding", and she's often seen veiled, lifting it briefly in a gesture of modesty. It is believed that she was worshipped as a Mother Goddess in Lycia and other Pre-Greek societies, being altered when the Hellenes took over the region. A few cults still existed to her in Greek times- a rarity for a second-generation Titan.

-Leto is the Titaness daughter of cruel Coeus & Phoebe, but was born gentle and maternal in stark contrast to her parents. Demure and modest, she often covered herself in baggy robes, and avoided the darker aspects of Titanian royalty. Instead, she acted as a low-level administrator of her family's empire, often pitying mortals. When the Titanomachy broke out, the less-powerful Leto stepped aside, commiserating with her "Sister", the sentient ship Asteria. After her parents were usurped by the Olympians, she was seduced after a long effort by Zeus- becoming one of his first conquests after Hera. A vengeful Hera promised to punish her, and swore vengeance upon anyone who helped her. Hera was known for many things, but making idle threats was not one of them- therefore, Leto was refused assistance and protection across the universe.

-Finally, Asteria took pity on her sister, and transformed herself into the island of Delos, where Leto gave birth. Hera sent the Giant Tityus to rape and murder her, but an infant Apollo slew him with his arrows, and Zeus sent him to be tortured for an eternity in Tartarus. When she attempted to bathe her newborns in a river, she was driven off by some shepherds- she petitioned Zeus to have them transformed into frogs as punishment- her only "violent" act in all her years.

-After this, Leto lived a quiet existence, leaving Zeus and only rarely interacting with the other Gods aside from her own children (who once slew a woman's entire family when she boasted of having more children than Leto). She took up administration of several hospitals and birthing facilities, making herself useful within the Olympian Empire without getting involved in the inner politics. Leto is peaceful and relatively serene, rarely getting involved in conflict. Most beings who deal with the Olympians will never see her, though she is permitted at important gatherings- Hera's hatred waned with the eons, and now merely treats her coldly and without care. Most could only dream to be treated so well by the Queen.

Jab's Notes: Leto is a look at what a Titan with no combat ability would look like- mighty for a Bystander, but hardly invincible.

And with Leto, we now get to "Apollo & Crew" of the Olympians- some names I'd been struggling with, in terms of "making something different".

Are you going to lean into the celestial properties of Apollo and Artemis? Or maybe do something with Apollo as bringer of plagues and make him a doctor, searching for cures to obscure diseases across space and time? Artemis as huntress, big game hunting the most dangerous animals on strange alien planets?

Yup- I'll go into their histories, and why they share domains with Helios & Selene for no apparent reason.

Total: Abilities: -18 / Skills: 48--24 / Advantages: 13 / Powers: 408 / Defenses: 20 (449)

Asteria in Mythology: Asteria is said to be the daughter of Coeus and Phoebe, sister to Leto (mother of Apollo & Artemis). The Goddess of Nocturnal Oracles and Falling Stars, she was not actively worshipped. Her primary importance was being the mother of Hecate, Goddess of Witchcraft. Said to be pursued by a rape-happy Zeus, she transformed into an island to escape him, which later became the place where Leto birthed her children.

-Asteria was the "sister" of Leto, and "daughter" of Coeus & Phoebe, but was much different than the flesh and blood of her family members- she was a sentient, living Starship that crossed the universe. Given life to better serve the Titanian Empire, she grew close with Leto, to the point where they became inseparable. When the Titanians went to war with Zeus and his children, Asteria was transformed into a Warship to enact her parents' will, but Leto successfully petitioned the Olympians to reprogram her in a daring raid involving Hades' Helm of Invisibility, turning her into an ally of the Olympians. Surviving the Titan War intact (the Gods swore upon the Styx to defend her from assault from anyone else), Asteria was prepared to settle into a peaceful existence.

-However, when her sister was sought out by Hera, who promised to punish anyone who aided the pregnant Leto, Asteria acted. She transformed herself into the island of Delos, which protected Leto from harm. Hera was furious, but could not harm Asteria due to the oath following the Titan War- she could only force a reluctant Zeus to freeze her in place for millennia- a sentence which is almost up. The Greeks found it a deeply-religious site, demanding that none should be allowed to be born here, or to die here.

Jab's Notes: Asteria isn't much of a character, so I wanted to do something different. I came up with the "Sentient Starship" idea when I read about her transforming into an island (having had an idea for SOMETHING going on there when I read about how it became sacred after Leto gave birth there).

Capers:
* Asteria awakens from millennia of sleep, worrying Hera, who now may have to deal with an angry Warship.

Complications:
Responsibility (Olympian Pride)- All Olympians are a bit prideful.
Responsibility (Orderly)- Apollo is known for stoicism and order, despite his great passions sometimes leading him astray.
Responsibility (Cultural Minister)- Apollo is charged as the "Cultural Minister" of Olympus- he leads the Muses in their activities, and creates works for many primitive cultures. This is intended to tell moral tales that alter the culture and behavior of those who worship the Olympians, thus creating idealized agents for the Gods.
Responsibility (Arrogance)- Few Gods punish hubris quite like Apollo does- his revenge for such things is legendary.
Relationship (Leto- Mother)- Apollo's first act of killing was to slay the Giant Tityos for attempting to rape Leto on Hera's orders. When a mortal woman boasted at having more children than Leto, Apollo and Artemis slaughtered her children completley.
Relationship (Artemis- Sister)- Apollo and Artemis are incredibly close twins, and each will attack anyone who disrespects the other.
Obsession (Sex)- Apollo is definitely his father's son- his unquenchable lust for women (and some men) is legendary.

Total: Abilities: 100 / Skills: 72--36 / Advantages: 28 / Powers: 92 / Defenses: 16 (272)

Apollo in Mythology: Apollo was of incredibly vast importance to the Ancient Greeks, and was worshipped all over, with more Temples to his name than almost anyone. His name is famous even today, and the phrase "Body of a Greek God" is associated more with him than any other- to the Hellenic peoples, he respresented the ideal "kouros", or beardless, athletic youth: he was tall, had delicate facial features, broad shoulders, a narrow waist, and an itty-bitty little wiener.

Apollo is said to be the son of Zeus and Leto- his twin sister is Artemis, and both were known for their incredible skills with archery. Apollo was really popular, and became the God of a LOT of things- disease struck randomly and without prejudice, much like arrows, and so he became a God of Plague and Sickness. He gave power to the Oracle at Delphi, and was so the God of Prophecy. He was the God of Healing, unless his son Asclepius was explicitly worshipped for that separately. He was the God of Herders, and was the leader of the Muses, who became the inspiration for all human arts. And in the third century B.C., Apollo supplanted Helios (Sun) as the Sun God, with many stories featuring him driving the solar chariot instead of the Titan. He was also charged with protection from evil.

Apollo featured in a LOT of myths. When a satyr boasted that he could defeat anyone at music, and said the winner could do what he wished to the loser, Apollo beat him and then FLAYED HIM ALIVE (this image appears in a lot of art, featuring an unfortunate satyr about to literally be skinned alive). He pursued countless women, much as his father did, and even went after a few beautiful young men. The male Hyacinthos was turned into a flower after his unfortunate death in a discus contest (LOTS of guys die by discus in Greek stories), and the nymph Daphne transformed into a tree rather than fall to Apollo's advances. When he impregnated Koronis, he had her killed for being unfaithful, but out of remorse raised her child to become Asclepius- God of Healing, then punished the tattling crow who told him by changing it from snow-white to black.

Apollo's worship was translated more or less directly from Greece to Rome, where he became very popular- the Emperor Augustus declared special kinship with Apollo, making him one of the chief gods of the Roman Empire, despite being "quintessentially Greek" in theme and appearance.

Far-Shooting Apollo:
-Among the most powerful and famous Olympians is Apollo, a being both beloved and feared throughout the galaxy. While famous for his great beauty and charisma, and a fabled Dragon-Slayer (he killed the Dragon Python after it had been sent by Hera after his mother) and healer, he is known for being as violent, capricious and obsessive as any God.

-Apollo and his twin sister Artemis were born to Leto, a Titaness who'd fled much of reality when Hera realized she was pregnant with the children of Zeus- the Queen of the Gods threatened everyone she could find to not harbor the laboring Leto, who eventually gave birth upon an island that was once her "sister", the sentient ship Asteria. The twins grew up mighty- Apollo killed a Dragon (Python) and a Giant sent after his mother- and were soon formally adopted by Zeus, who adored his powerful children. Apollo grew up to be the most handsome of the Gods, fabled throughtout the universe for his great beauty- his lovers were many (unlike most Gods, he never married), and he also became a celebrated singer, musician and charismatic entertainer- the equivalent of a powerful general also being the most famous celebrity in the world.

-His true purpose is to be the "Cultural Minister" of the Olympians- fashioning stories devoted to altering the behavior, culture and even morals of those subserviant to the Gods, creating an idealized world of worshippers. Using his gift of Prophecy to figure out where cultures are headed, he manipulates things towards a positive end for the Gods, and would share his gift of healing with others- helping them view the Gods as charitable, learned beings. The critics of Olympus are quick to point out that this is social engineering and religious propaganda on a grand scale, while Apollo dismisses these thoughts, and passes it off as "sharing our culture with the universe".

Much-Feared Apollo:
-Despite that, Apollo also drew much fear- any insult placed towards him, his sister, or his mother, was met with extreme force. When the Satyr Marsyos challenged him to a musical contest, Apollo flayed him alive for losing. When Leto was insulted by a woman with fourteen children (who boasted of having seven times the fecundity of the Titaness), Apollo and Artemis slew the innocents with their arrows. His lust was legendary as well- the nymph Daphne permanently transformed herself into a tree rather than fall into his clutches, and his mortal sons number in the thousands- only Zeus and Poseidon rival him in terms of fatherhood.

-Apollo's role in the Olympian Empire is a bit more vague than that of his fellows- Ares is a warrior, Athena a leader, Zeus and his brothers are rulers. Apollo appears to have no real place other than being the "public face" of the Gods- one who appears more frequently than the others. His natural charisma and great beauty earn him the adoration of the public (especially in more ancient cultures), while his terrible rage earns him respect and fear- powerful weapons in the Olympians's war for control. His might as a warrior is also necessary at times- such a public symbol makes it very clear that the Olympians aren't to be trifled with. Apollo is often a careful planner and an orderly sort when his personal affectations don't get the better of him- ancient philosophers considered him a contrast to his more chaotic half-brother, Dionysus.

-Apollo's status as a "Sun God" is somewhat controversial- typically, this was the domain of Helios, one of the Titans. However, Helios became eager to "retire" from his position (which largely consisted of foolin the "rubes" by flying about in a Sun Chariot that is really a glowing spaceship), and so Apollo adopted part of that detail in order to consolidate power among the elite Olympians.

Modern Apollo:
-Apollo continues "teaching" many of the primitive races stories and fables of the Gods, creating idealized cultures that are "properly taught" how to behave. As the most popular Olympian throughout much of the cosmos, Apollo is in a rare position, and would gladly be accepted as a "new leader" of the Pantheon compared to some of his more fearsom family members. This reality has not escaped the attention of his stepmother Hera, who has begun to tempt Apollo with the idea of becoming the new "Skyfather" and King of Olympus with Zeus being absent. Their story, after all, is always one of fathers and sons.

Jab's Notes: Apollo is a curious one in the Pantheon, and took me a while to figure out. He seems like one of the "Partier" Gods, being in charge of music and always chasing tail, but I twisted things into a somewhat darker tone- leading the Muses and being in charge of storytelling would actually be a form of propaganda for beings such as this- he's effectively "engineering" the kind of people the Olympians would want to worship them, and "brainwashing" people to their side. He's an interesting study in contrasts, too- being orderly, kindly and focused, while also being a terrible, arrogant opponent who punishes hubris without mercy.

Are any other pantheons secretly aliens? Because, I must say, sci-fi pagan gods are an awesome idea!

I've been thinking about the origins of other "Gods"- some are otherdimensional beings, some are psionic entities, and others are just mortals with superhuman powers- I think the Egytpian Gods will actually be the ancient equivalent of The Avengers, who just came to be worshipped!

Others will totally be aliens, but I didn't want to just repeat that gimmick over and over again :).

Perses in Mythology: Perses is a Titan of Destruction, as his name literally means "Destroy". He appears in almost no stories- he is simply the father of Hecate with Asteria.

-Perses is the son of Crius & Eurybia, along with Pallas and Astraeus. His name came to mean "Destroyer" or "Ravager" in Ancient Greek, as he was meant to be a destructive War God. It was this side that made him useful to his "cousin", the Sentient Starship Asteria- using her own technology, the might of Perses, and the Magic inherent to the Cosmic Force of the universe, she created Hecate of the Triple-Path, a Goddess of Magic. Perses, generally just called The Ravager, is a powerful General in the Olympian Army, having betrayed his parents to the Olympians millennia ago, and is often used for the most destructive or violent missions. Though he has been far surpassed by Ares and several other Gods, he is still very dangerous.

Jab's Notes: I went with a PL 10 guy for the most part, but with some wide-reaching power. He's PL 11 with the Energy Weapons most Gods use. This is one of those classic "doesn't really need to be around" guys, but characters like this are PERFECT for "One-Off" foes- they have some sort of history, a reason to be around, and they're good enough for a small threat. I can imagine Ares, Eris or Hera getting involved and sending this guy against the heroes for a scrap or two.

Complications:
Responsibility (The Olympian Pantheon)- All Gods have a place in the Pantheon, though some jobs are more important than others. Many Gods are meant to represent "concepts" and thus be worthy of worship to mortal beings. Horcus's job is to punish those who commit perjury or swear to false oaths- which can be a rather large job in an empire this big.
Relationship (Eris- Mother)- The Goddess of Chaos is Horcus's mother, and she often wants him to carry out some of her sinister missions. Busy and, well, not evil, he usually refuses.

Total: Abilities: 98 / Skills: 52--26 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 232 / Defenses: 18 (384)

Hecate in Mythology: Hecate was formerly a rather obscure Goddess, but her popularity in modern-day stuff like Wicca and spellcasting has given her a new lease on life. She was usually depicted with three faces, representing crossroads, entrance-ways, light, ghosts, herbs, magic and witchcraft. Hesiod promoted her considerably, and appears to have been deeply devoted to her- this confuses many scholars, as she appears little elsewhere- it's thought that Hesiod came from a town that venerated her, and was more or less a preacher in her flock. She was one of the main Goddesses of Athens as well, worshipped in order to protect the family.

-Hecate is the mighty daughter of Asteria, but has one of the strangest origins of any Goddess. Simply put, it is rather unusual for starships to produce offspring. Asteria was a sentient, island-sized starship that became like a sister to Leto (the mother of Apollo and Artemis). Gaining a personality and a desire for family, Asteria too wished to produce offspring. Her method for doing so was to copy the genetic material of the Titan Perses (God of Destruction), add it to her own technology, and to utilize a magic spell in order to bind it all together- she used the power of a primitive coven of witches in order to do this. This most primal, ancient magic was able to assist in grafted technology to Immortal flesh and bone, resulting in Hecate- the Triple-Formed Goddess.

-Hecate was born of magic and technology, and thus could occupy both words- a true rarity allowed only by the miracle of her birth. Despite a frightening visage, she was one of the more positive Olympians, and dutiful to the rulers of Mount Olympus- she refused to assault Hera for the acts that endangered Leto and turned her "mother" into the island of Delos.

-Though the Olympians abandoned Earth centuries ago, particularly as a source of worshippers, Hecate herself managed to gain several small cults, primarily from spellcasters, who would often use the Goddess's powerful reputation and spirit as a "focus" for their spells. Her popularity in recent years is said by many Gods to have gone to her head, however- she has taken to dressing in "Goth" clothing (which is a trend that has touched many worlds, but only for a short period of time) and maintaining a dreary, self-important attitude, no matter how out of fashion that look has become.

-Hecate still appears before numerous cultists and covens, appearing to bestow blessings and accept worship- controversial claims that are against the law in many worlds that were once under Olympian control. A powerful spellcaster, she is among the most varied Mages in existence, adopting powerful Alchemical and Necromantic spells. Not the powerhouse that other Wizards are (few suspect that the Goddess of Witchcraft lacks the raw might of a Mr. Black, and matches the offensive output of The Emerald Witch), she is actually MUCH more versatile, capable of generating long-lasting Alchemical spells far beyond the levels of almost any mortal sorcerer- so those who disregard her might are often surprised at her sheer capability and skill.

Jab's Notes: Hecate's a tricky one- she's been given a lot more hype that she ever really deserved, largely owing to her association with witchcraft and magic. And of course a Goddess of Magic should be a REALLY powerful Sorceress- among the greatest ever, right? But... my Greek Gods are typically statting up from PL 7-12, and I didn't want her leaping over more important types like Athena, Ares and Hera! So I had to kind of make her a versatile sorceress with long-lasting spells, versus an offensive powerhouse.

-I also wanted to make her kind of a Worshipper-Seeker and Goth Wannabe, owing to how she's sometimes treated in modern society. Basically my little dig at Goths (a friend of mine was one for a while, but mostly used it as a "costume" to wear occasionally, despite being obsessed with the subculture), plus giving some interesting story potential, considering she's actively trying to form religions and covens around her.

-The trickiness of dealing with her was finally solved when I looked at her origins- having already come up with the "Asteria is a Starship" plot, I was about to turn back on that when I realized that Asteria was the mother of Hecate. But then... I realized that the "Three-Faced" Triple-Goddess would be PERFECT for that kind of thing. She's thus a creature of Technology, a creature of Flesh and Blood (her father, Perses), and a creature of Magic (the spells that hold her together). So she's an extremely unusual concept- a Cybernetic Wizard.

-Her final points cost really indicates her power- she's only PL 11, but her versatility is unquestioned.

There's a reason I made a gigantic post near the beginning of the thread detailing why magic worked differently in my world :).
