Destrachans are SO weird. They're so distinctive, but have such an odd grab-bag of powers that I'm not sure how they're supposed to be used. And the supporting materials never elaborate upon them- the "Lords of Madness" book just ignore them completely in favor of Aboleths, Mind Flayers and Neogi. What's the origin of these things in D&D?

Quite plausibly, though with the Yrthak I have the vague idea that it's inspired by a giant monster movie that could never show the critter for very long and used sound effects to suggest its presence.
