(Power Level 8)

Real Name: Jamal Freeman
Status: Alive; enrolled at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe
Height / Weight: 5’9” / 148 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Black / Brown
Place of Birth / Date of Birth: Baltimore, Maryland, United States / November 17, 2010 (15-years-old as of NVAE #26)
Home Dimension: Oubliette-731
First Appearance: Tabula Rasa #1
Tags: #neosapien, #nva, #nvae, #oubliette731, #refugee, #unitedstates

Physical Description: Jamal wears his hair cropped short. While his legs are skinny, he sports a muscular upper body from years of pushing his wheelchair.

Relationships: Tory Freeman (mother; deceased), Theo Gibson (uncle; deceased), Laura Gibson (aunt; deceased), Quark (enemy)

Biography: When Jamal Freeman was six, he and his mother were in a car accident that claimed her life and stripped him of the use of his legs. As Jamal never knew his father, he was adopted by his aunt and uncle, Theo and Laura Gibson. Most recently, however, Jamal’s Neo-Sapien powers manifested: when Jamal gets angry, his body releases a noxious gas. Unable to control this power, his guardians sent the boy to the New Vindicators Academy of America. There, Jamal was placed on a training squadron along with Mickie Daniels, Nicole Muccianti, and Chad Winter—a team the four dubbed The Leftovers.

Though Jamal’s handicap prevented him from participating in most of the training exercises, he managed to make it through his first semester without letting his emotions rage out of control. All of that changed, however, when he returned from Christmas break. His aunt and uncle accompanied him back to New York, seeking to help get him settled back in. While the family took in the city, a super-powered villain known as Quark struck. (TB #13)

Helpless to do anything more than watch as Quark disintegrated them, Jamal began brooding. When Section 8 attacked the school to seek revenge on one of their former teachers, Jamal asked to join them, in the hopes they could help him take revenge on Quark. Due to his disability, the vigilantes declined his offer, leaving the school without him and leaving him feeling even more helpless. (TB #15)

Jamal began to await Quark’s day in court and plotted to kill the man at his earliest chance. Before such a chance could arrive, the Scelerati Society put their plan into motion. In the ensuing chaos, Alcatraz was attacked and Quark—as well as several other villains housed there—escaped. (TB #17-18)

As Jamal’s ire grew, so did the stench emanating from him. With no one able to tolerate being in his presence, Jamal grew more and more isolated. Left alone with only revenge fantasies, a darkness came over Jamal.

It was only when the Armada arrived that the dark clouds over Jamal Freeman began to recede: while many were evacuated from his world, Jamal is confident that his aunt and uncle’s killer was not among them. Believing Quark died with Oubliette-731, Jamal is finally happy once again. (NVAE #25)

Jamal's schtick is that if he's angry, he exudes a terrible stench. Also, he's confined to a wheelchair. For now. I suspect a certain Frenchman just might try to undo this before long...

Physical Description: Tall and thin, Regina keeps her hair cut short. She tends to favor tight-fitting clothes in drab colours.

Relationships: Lex Sway / Anomaly (father; deceased), Jacquelyn Sway / Tripper (mother; deceased)

Biography: The daughter of two Guardians, Regina’s powers manifested at a young age. By the time she reached the age to enroll at the New Vindicators Academy, she was well practiced in the use of her abilities. She was placed onto a training squadron along with Heidi Lancaster, Sarah Manther, and Ken Porter. When prompted, Ken named their team The Number Four.

During the second semester of her freshman year, the Scelerati Society launched an attack that culminated with a prison break on Alcatraz. In the ensuing attack, both of Regina’s parents sacrificed their lives. (TB #18)

In the aftermath of the Scelerati Society’s attack, Regina became withdrawn and sullen. When Apocatastasis was revived, the New Vindicators and the Scelerate Society formed a truce. Though Regina was not present for the battle, she learned about the temporary alliance as her dimension was being evacuated, causing her to resent her former classmates.

(Power Level 8)

Real Name: Heidi Lancaster
Status: Alive; enrolled at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe
Height / Weight: 5’0” / 105 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Brown / Green
Place of Birth / Date of Birth: Loveland, Colorado, United States / November 29, 2009 (15-years-old as of NVAE #26)
Home Dimension: Oubliette-731
First Appearance: Tabula Rasa #1
Tags: #neosapien, #nva, #nvae, #oubliette731, #refugee, #unitedstates

Relationships: Frank Lancaster (father), Joanne Lancaster (mother), Miles Lancaster / Renegade (brother), Jim Loder / Cataclysm (ex-boyfriend/enemy), 3 (enemy)

Biography: When Heidi was still in grade school, her big brother manifested an aspect of their mother’s Neo-Sapien ability to forge physical, three-dimensional shapes out of her shadow. Jealous of the attention it got him, twelve-year-old Heidi struck out to try and force her abilities to manifest and more: Miles could only turn his shadow into tendrils to coil around things; Heidi was determined to have the sort of control her mother had. For weeks, she struggled to manifest, not realizing that necessity caused most abilities to surface. She found a surge of adrenaline when her attempts startled a mother possum. As she backed away from the hissing animal, she tripped, touched her shadow, and turned it into a legion of lances that impaled the creature.

Over the next few years, Heidi watched as her brother was enrolled at the New Vindicators Academy of America and patiently waited for her turn. As she entered high school, Heidi was enrolled. There, she was put on a training team along with Sarah Manther, Ken Porter, and Regina Sway—a team dubbed The Number Four by Ken.

As her first semester at the school came to a conclusion, her brother—fed up with his classmate’s antics—attacked Jim Loder, savagely beating him without his powers. It was an action that saw Miles expelled from the school, but he did not return home to Colorado. Instead, he ran away to Las Vegas, to train with his roommates’ family, the Night Stalkers. Though Heidi was not aware of her brother’s location, Jim presumed she was privy to this knowledge and began a relationship with her in an attempt to find the youth.

Oblivious to Jim’s true intentions, Heidi savored every moment with the teen. After she slept with him, Jim revealed that he’d recorded them and threatened to release an edit of the video, unless Heidi told him where her brother was. Before she could answer, the Scelerati Society made their move. By the time the dust settled, Jim’s siblings, Drew and Josie, were counted among the dead and he seemed to forget about his grudge with Heidi’s brother.

Before things could return to normal, however, Gene Stevenson returned to the school, bringing with him the attention of his “brother”: 3. 3 was Gene’s predecessor in Project: Ascension. Though highly trained to act as a soldier in a hypothetical war between mankind and Neo-Sapiens, 3 was psychotic. He believed he had been turned into a monster and strove to do the same to others. As he arrived in New York, he began to focus on transforming the New Vindicators into monsters. He abducted Sarah Manther, Heidi’s friend and teammate, and ordered Heidi to kill three of her classmates to win Sarah’s freedom.

When Heidi was unable to do so before 3’s deadline, he murdered her friend and dumped her body into the East River. Ultimately, Heidi blamed herself and descended into depression.

Following the end of the school year, Heidi made plans to return home, only for Apocatastasis to be revived before the arrival of the Armada. With the help of Abe Chobanian, Heidi returned home to get her parents and evacuate to another dimension. Now, Heidi is enrolled at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe, but is still separated from her brother: Miles has taken a team of students from their home dimension to hunt down the criminals from their world. While their primary goal has been locating the Scelerati Society, Heidi has seen news stories implying that 3 may have also crossed over…

Beyond that, Heidi is a halfway normal 15-year-old girl.

Real Name: Shelby Maureen Isabelle DeGallow
Status: Alive; enrolled at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe
Height / Weight: 5’6” / 118 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Black / Blue
Place of Birth / Date of Birth: Vienna, Austria / May 27, 2009 (16-years-old as of NVAE #26)
Home Dimension: Oubliette-8,634
First Appearance: New Vindicators Academy of Europe #24
Tags: #doppelganger, #neosapien, #nvae, #oubliette8634, #refugee

Physical Description: Shelby is an attractive young woman whose hair hangs past her shoulders—despite Paladin’s constantly nagging her about cutting it. She wears an unaltered uniform, save that she leaves it slightly unfastened to show more of her chest.

Relationships: Viktor DeGallow / Impasse (father; deceased), Sarah DeGallow / Shriek (mother; deceased), Boffin (mentor; deceased), Robert Crawford / Paladin (mentor), Roselyn Arnet-Rexroth / Ultra Mauler (teammate), Lloyd Caspain / Ion (teammate), Charles Catargi / Kelpie (teammate; deceased), Logan Dekker / Dispatch (teammate), Tamati Stevens / Taheka (boyfriend)

Biography: In an alternate future, a war between super-powered beings resulted in the near extinction of the Neo-Sapien race. Surviving were five inexperienced children, who found the only viable tactic to run. Ultimately, they were saved by a hero from another world: Paladin, who began to teach them how to fight back and survive. Shelby DeGallow wanted more than that, however: she wanted a normal life. She wanted to go to school, as her parents had. She wanted a boyfriend.

Her salvation came with another arrival: the Drifter. The woman took the six survivors to Oubliette-137—arriving during the Armada’s invasion. The team helped the Blue Knight in the field and were brought to the New Vindicators Academy of Europe—Shelby’s parents’ alma mater. (NVAE #24)
There, Shelby volunteered to join Delta Team in infiltrating the Elpis and reaching the ship’s servers. Along the way, Shelby began to fall for one of her new teammates, Tamati Stevens. After besting some of the Armada, the two shared a kiss. However, their journey was not one purely of bliss: not long after their embrace, Tamati’s classmate Wally was killed by the Armada, and Shelby found herself comforting the boy she’d only met earlier that day. (NVAE #25)

Ultimately, Shelby and Tamati found themselves stranded on Oubliette-137. The pair are continuing their relationship as students of the Viennese school, beginning their sophomore year together. (NVAE #26)

(Power Level 8)

Real Name: Derryl Isaacson
Status: Alive; enrolled at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe
Height / Weight: 5’5” / 124 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Brown / Brown
Place of Birth / Date of Birth: Mission, British Columbia, Canada / May 20, 2011 (15-years-old as of NVAE #26)
Home Dimension: Oubliette-731
First Appearance: Tabula Rasa #13
Tags: #canada, #neosapien, #nva, #nvae, #oubliette731

Physical Description: Little stands out about Derryl physically; he keeps his hair cut short and sports an average physique. He tends to favor V-neck shirts under another shirt and jeans.

Relationships: Tyler Isaacson (father), Tiffany Isaacson (mother), Derryl Isaacson-333 (doppelganger)

Biography: The summer before Derryl began his freshman year of high school, two visitors dropped in on the Isaacson household: the Drifter and Derryl Isaacson. Until that point, Derryl was unaware of the existence of alternate dimensions and doppelgangers. Suddenly, he was meeting himself—the version of himself from a dimension that no longer was, thanks to a threat known as the Armada.

With nowhere else to go, Derryl’s parents agreed to temporarily take in their son’s doppelganger. While Derryl’s mother was sympathetic to the youth’s situation, his father wanted to see the clone gone. Fortunately, an easy solution presented itself: unlike Derryl, this newcomer had manifested their mother’s Neo-Sapien ability to manipulate sound, making him a candidate for the New Vindicators Academy of America.

The new Derryl Isaacson soon left for New York and the original went to a normal high school. That is, until his first semester began to conclude. When a pair of bullies locked the boy in a supply closet, he began trying to call for help. When no one came, Derryl began to panic. He screamed for help, manifesting the same abilities his mother and doppelganger possess.

After a debate on what was best for their son, Derryl’s father flew to New York to ask his son’s doppelganger if he would be comfortable with Derryl attending classes with him. As the second semester began, a second Derryl Isaacson was enrolled at the school, leading to several of their classmates being confused. Eventually, the Derryl they knew was forced to explain the situation to the others. (TB #13)

When the Scelerati Society launched their attack on the New Vindicators Academy, Quake—mistaking Derryl for the Derryl from another universe—incapacitated the teen. Derryl was placed in a sensory deprivation chamber and buried in an unmarked grave. Ultimately, Derryl’s doppelganger and that Derryl’s girlfriend—Quake’s sister—were able to find him and free him before his oxygen ran out. (TB #17)

Sometime later, Apocatastasis was revived as the Armada arrived. A decision was made to sacrifice Derryl’s home dimension, in order to save two others. Derryl and his parents were evacuated to another dimension’s Vienna, where he found himself now attending the New Vindicators Academy of Europe. (NVAE #25)

Michuru wrote:Characters at the NVAE with sonic powers: Terry Nelson, Tatjana Nelson, Sarah Nelson, Shelby DeGallow, Derryl Isaacson x2... Clearly we need more.

Early on in the Tabula Rasa game, one of the players approached me with one of the best backstories I've ever been handed: he wasn't from this dimension, but was a refugee escaping a world where it had long been suffering from a Groundhog's Day effect he called Infinity. He then left it up to me to do whatever I wanted, all the while baffling the other players with oddities like constantly marking his arms or making strange statements.

After our first year, I had his father show up and we had a cryptic conversation in front of the other players:

"My son has manifested powers."

"I see."

"He wants to go here. Would that... be an issue for you?"

"I don't think so."

"Do your other classmates... Do they know?"

"No. I guess they'll find out soon, huh?"

It was tons of fun. Still, for Derryl-731, I wanted a build that reflected how different he was from Derryl-333. The PC was like an instrument himself: his manipulation of sound was so precise and fine that I realized the best way to represent this version of him was to make him a hammer--just a blunt force. 731 doesn't have all of the tricks 333 has. He can't eavesdrop on someone from a block away. He can't imitate anyone. He can't evoke different sensations in a person by altering the pitch. All he can do is just scream loud.

Real Name: Beatrice Marceau
Status: Alive; enrolled at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe
Height / Weight: 4’10” / 108 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Blonde / Hazel
Place of Birth / Date of Birth: Nantes, France / October 14, 1993
Home Dimension: Oubliette-137
First Appearance: New Vindicators Academy of Europe #4
Tags: #france, #magus, #neospaien, #nvae, #oubliette137

Physical Description: Originally, Beatrice had long, blonde hair that fells just past her shoulders. Self-conscious about her chubby cheeks and braces, she routinely tries to not smile. She is seldom seen not wearing her favorite color—red—usually with black and white tones. As such, her uniform is the standard uniform, with a red sash loosely tied around her waist.

Following the Armada’s attack and Otso’s disappearance, Beatrice adopted a more gothic appearance: she cut her hair short and dyed it black, began wearing black mascara and lipstick, and proceeded to dress entirely in black. At this time, she also took up smoking. Since Otso’s return, she has stopped wearing makeup and has begun to introduce more colour into her wardrobe.

Relationships: Nolan Marceau (father), Océane Marceau (mother), Otso Karell (boyfriend)

Biography: Prior to enrolling in the New Vindicators Academy of Europe, Beatrice lived a normal life in France. Upon her arrival, however, she was fairly alienated by her speaking only French. However, a sophomore at the school—Otso Karell—was a linguist who began to converse with her. Soon, the two started a relationship. Not long after, she also found herself the target for Larrikin’s affections—ambitions quickly quashed by Otso.

A little over a month into the semester, her parents arrived in Vienna, seeking to celebrate their daughter’s fifteenth birthday with her. The family was ambushed at the Liechtenstein Museum: Laputa’s mole inside of the school—Ronald Nelson—had become compromised by his wife; after killing her to keep his secret safe, Laputa feared Beatrice’s powers could expose his guilt and her termination (as well as her parents—one of whom she would have inherited her powers from) was ordered.

The Marceau family was attacked by Therianthrope and Tantivy, but saved by several New Vindicators. Though Tantivy escaped, Therianthrope was captured. The Marceau family was evacuated to the school, where Beatrice’s father was initially declared dead. However, Quintessence’s healing power impossibly brought the man back to life. (NVAE #7)

Months later, Otso became the latest victim of Durendal’s powers. Unable to change back from his bear form, Otso feared what his animal instincts would cause him to do to those around him—especially Beatrice. He voluntarily had himself restrained in the lower levels. When Beatrice went to visit him, Tallemaja approached her. She offered her a canister that could only be open when it needed to be opened. Morphing her hands into razor-sharp claws, Tallemaja eviscerated Beatrice, causing the canister to open and reveal the Golden Apple inside of it. (NVAE #16)

Beatrice survived the experience and sometime later found herself conscripted into the force the Drifter took to Oubliette-519. In the initial battle, Beatrice was taken out once more by a blast of flame—this time from Pyre. (NVAE #20) Again, she survived, and returned to the school.

After returning home for the summer, plans were made for the Marceau family to join Matt Kowalski and his son, Otso Karell, in Finland. As Beatrice was packing for the trip, news of the Armada’s arrival in Vienna reached her. Before she could get back to the school, she was notified that her boyfriend had taken part in a mission to infiltrate the Elpis and, following the Armada’s defeat, was now counted among the missing.

Returning to Vienna, she tried everything in her power to find him, to no avail. Forced to accept that he was still alive, but trapped in another dimension, Beatrice noticed one of the magi her classmates had encountered over the course of her freshman year. Hoping that magic could bring Otso back to this dimension, she followed the woman to the new location for the Dust Jacket. There, she made a bargain with Chuck Faust: in exchange for teaching her magic, Beatrice destroyed the wards the Aurelius had placed around the school.

Not only did Beatrice’s Neo-Sapien ability help her to better perceive the movements her teacher made, it made them more precise. While Beatrice is not the most knowledge magus, she

Beatrice learned to channel arcana, and found her talent for transmutation. Faust proceeded to give her books that might contain a ritual that would let her cross dimensions. As she conducted one ritual, Otso returned—albeit with the help of a new Drifter. Though she struggled with confessing what she had done, Beatrice kept her secret until the Sophomore Blitz. There, she revealed her magical knack in front of the whole school—increasing her strength and endurance as she faced a tyrannosaurus rex. (NVAE #26)

Post-Armada, one of the things I considered was how Beatrice was constantly playing the damsel in distress and was deserving of a power boost. She could have had one had Jack fed her that apple, but learning magic presents some unique opportunities for the plot as well.

Bea is the first NVAE student with a (posted) updated build. Literally all of the kids have gone through a slight evolution that represents what they went through the previous year. The goal is to get them all updated... just as soon as I can finish working on the updated biographies.

I love that Beatrice has gotten some development! I'm really digging the fact that some of the npc's are starting to get involved in ways that are a bit more nuanced than previously. No longer simply divided into victims/villains/furniture some of them are beginning to enter the story as complex actors and I'm glad to see Beatrice at the forefront.

Interesting comparison between unpowered and powered version of the character.

Honestly, all of the blame lies at yours and the other player's feet. You all found something in several NPCs and made them more interesting than they otherwise would have been. Honestly, were it not for McGuffin, Beatrice would be another victim of Laputa. Similarly, Arkrite made Doug more than a joke; you and Tattooedman have given Ellen depth as a character. You're the reason Juozas became more than just a bully, HH. This is a shared story, and you fantastic people are responsible for truly making this cast come to life.

Thank you! In the past, I was more keen to just replace outdated builds, but now, I'm trying more to show the evolution of them.

2E is were I am most comfortable. I have to turn to the rule book every so often, but for the most part I have the character creation parts halfway memorized. I've tried 3E a few times, and it has it's good points, but this clicks for me.
