RHEID
(Power Level 8)

Real Name: Armande (last name unrevealed)
Status: Alive; enrolled at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe
Height / Weight: 5’8” / 142 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Brown / Green
Place of Birth / Date of Birth: Unrevealed (known to be the United States) / Unrevealed (15-years-old, as of his first appearance)
Home Dimension: Oubliette-137
First Appearance: New Vindicators Academy of Europe #6
Tags: #laputa, #neosapien, #nvae, #oubliette137, #peorian, #unitedstates, #volunteers

Physical Description: Armande is an athletic young man with olive skin and thick dark hair. He is missing his left eye. The numbers 00073 are burned on the inside of his right arm. When transformed, his skin takes on a slate color.

Relationships: Father (presumed deceased), Mother (presumed deceased), Captain Ronald Nelson / Vociferant (mentor), Pirjo Tähti / Felsic (crush), Venefica (girlfriend)

Biography: Armande offers little information on his past, prior to his capture. What is known is that Black Box attacked him and his family in Nevada. His parents attempted to cover his escape. Armande was found less than an hour later and taken down, where his captors revealed that they had been forced to kill his parents.

At Peoria, Armande was branded. He was among the prisoners freed by the New Vindicators, and taken to Canada. Months later, Armande (now calling himself Rheid) turned up as one of Laputa’s pawns. Though designated as Captain Nelson’s protégé, the man’s assignment as a spy kept him interacting with Rheid, thus making Rheid a free agent. Despite this status, Rheid was not sent on field assignments by Laputa.

During the Laputa invasion, Rheid clashed with a large contingency of Vindicators and New Vindicators. Though he proved to be an indomitable opponent, he was finally bested by Magnitude. (NVAE #10)

Following the defeat of Laputa, Rheid was taken into custody. According to Adeltrudis Flaegler, special consideration would be made for many of Laputa’s pawns, given their age. Further, given that Rheid had not actually committed any crimes prior to the invasion, she believed that whatever sentence was cast down upon him would be merciful. Instead of prison, he was relinquished to the custody of the New Vindicators Academy of Europe.

There, he joined the Volunteers. Rheid harbored feelings towards Felsic from their time spent in Laputa’s organization. After enrollment in the Vienna school, Felsic had a brief relationship with a local youth. During that interval, Armande—in an attempt to get over her—began a relationship with another newcomer at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe, Venefica.

When the Armada invaded, Armand was tasked with protecting the school—must to his chagrin. When Felsic returned catatonic, he opted to remain by her side, rather than invade the Elpis. (NVAE #24-25)

Though Venefica has graduated from the school, she has remained in Vienna, to be near Armande. She works at café and has an apartment, but things are strained between them as Armade’s focus has been on helping Felsic.

Still, I wanted to represent some time spent working with Kas and also a bit more training at the school, which adjusts his combat abilities a smidge.

FELSIC
(Power Level 8)

Real Name: Pirjo Tähti
Status: Alive; enrolled at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe
Height / Weight: 5’9” / 103 lbs. (515 lbs. in magma form)
Hair / Eyes: Platinum Blonde / Blue
Place of Birth / Date of Birth: Ilomantsi, North Karelia, Finland / August 15, 1992
Home Dimension: Oubliette-137
First Appearance: New Vindicators Academy of Europe #6
Tags: #finland, #laputa, #neosapien, #nvae, #oubliette137

Physical Description: A tall, wispy girl, Pirjo’s hair hangs to her shoulders. Typically, she wears a special suit under her clothes—one that is not incinerated when she changes forms.

Relationships: Jeri Tähti (father), Tarjo Tähti (mother), Armande / Rheid (friend)

Biography: In 1939, the Winter War began with the Soviet Union’s attack on Finland. A year later, the Moscow Peace Treaty ceded the area of Karelia to the attackers. Nearly four-hundred thousand people left their homeland and migrated to Finland. Amongst them was Rauni Kilde, a Nephilim capable of wielding red hellfire.

Though Rauni married a Finnish man, she tried to instill in her children the memory of what she considered her homeland. She taught them to speak the Karelian language and play the kantele. A love for the Karelian culture was instilled in Rauni’s children and passed on to her grandchildren.

In 2008, Rauni’s great-granddaughter, Pirjo, heard the news of what was happening in the United States. She heard that tales of Neo-Sapiens being ripped from their homes and put into concentration camps—she saw the refugees migrating into Europe. She was reminded of her great-grandmother’s generation and felt that history was repeating itself.

As a Karelian Neo-Sapien, Pirjo wanted to do something to help her sukukansa—her ethnic family: she took to the internet, blogging and posting on message boards about what was going on in America. In the process, she spoke about her own Neo-Sapien abilities, which Erudite saw a use for…

Erudite imagined that, should Entier not be able to control their son, Pirjo’s abilities would make her an effective counter to the youth. Entier and Tallemaja were dispatched to recruit Pirjo. While Entier spoke with her, Tallemaja used magic to compel the girl’s parents to give their only child up.
On her first mission, Felsic encountered Fluxx—her mentors’ son—albeit while he was posing as Beatrice Marceau. Though it seemed Felsic’s orders were to kill the girl, she pleaded with her to flee to Paris, even going so far as to offer to help fake her death. Upon Fluxx revealing himself, she pleaded with him—revealing what could have been construed by Laputa as a duplicitous nature, which Fluxx attempted to take advantage of. When pleading with him failed, Felsic transformed and their battle ended as quickly as it began: after receiving a punch from Felsic, Fluxx passed through the street and used the sewers to escape. (NVAE #7)

Felsic was not encountered again until the Laputa Invasion, when Candyman, Ursa, and Pict charged into the island’s engine room, only to encounter the girl and her mentor. Upon realizing what they were here to do, Felsic pleaded with them to reconsider, knowing that disabling the instruments would disable to the island’s life support system. In an effort to stop her from revealing that the heroes were about to potentially kill themselves, Entier attacked her ward. (NVAE #10)

Following Laputa’s defeat, Felsic was apprehended. According to Adeltrudis Flaegler, special consideration would be made for many of Laputa’s pawns, given their age. (NVAE #13) Not long after settling in in her new home, Pirjo began dating a local boy, though the relationship lasted very briefly.

Following a Wreck Room exercise, Pirjo found herself conscripted into the strike force the Astrolabe took to Oubliette-519. When Greystone killed Incubus, Felsic moved to protect Bile and Pyre, two other members of the Armada they had fought. An argument erupted over whether they had the right to claim anyone’s lives and an uncomfortable silence fell over the group when Greystone threw the girl’s past into her face. (NVAE #20)

Despite his feelings towards the former Laputa pawns, Felsic and Greystone were partnered up when the Armada arrived in their dimension. The two went to one landing site, where they encountered Hessian and Wehrmacht. After disabling their mining craft, the two New Vindicators left the duo to contend with Iconoclast, joining Ursa and Kodiak at the site of their battle.

The father and son team had encountered Paragon and Womack and Kodiak had lost his life in the melee. When the villains were put down, Felsic saw the pain and anguish on Ursa’s face and—while Greystone tried to hold Ursa back—made her way to Womack and snapped the Nephilim’s neck. (NVAE #24)

Since the moment she claimed Womack’s life, Felsic has been mired in a deep depression. Barely functioning, she goes through the motions of life, but does not speak.

I couldn't even justify bumping her Attack and Defense after a semester at the NVAE. I'm okay with that, though. I like Felsic as she is: high Toughness and an aura that triggers every time someone is tries to touch her.

#292: Bethany Fisher

BETHANY FISHER
(Power Level 5)

Real Name: Doctor Bethany Fisher
Status: Alive; employed as Headmistress of the New Vindicators Academy, supervising education
Height / Weight: 5’10” / 147 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Grey-Blonde / Blue
Place of Birth / Date of Birth: Manhattan, New York / February 11, 1959
Home Dimension: Oubliette-137
First Appearance: New Vindicators Academy of Europe #1
Tags: #faculty, #human, #nvae, #oubliette137, #unitedstates

Physical Description: Bethany appears a handsome woman in her late-forties: grey streaks her bobbed hair and crow’s feet are visible at the edges of her eyes. She carries a little extra weight around her hips and tries to hide this behind the jackets of pantsuits—which she is seldom seen outside of.

Relationships: Amy Bedford (sister; deceased), General Arthur Colbenson (ex-husband), Autumn Colbenson (daughter; deceased), Doctor Cheryl Colbenson (daughter), Forrest Bedford (brother-in-law; technically deceased), Mortimer Bedford (nephew; deceased), Chloe Bedford (niece; deceased)

Biography: Though she had a modest upbringing as the daughter of a taxi cab driver and a housekeeper, everyone always assumed that Bethany Fisher was destined for greatness. Skipping the fourth- and seventh-grade, Bethany graduated high school at the age of sixteen-years-old and had to obtain her parents’ permission to marry her classmate, Arthur Colbenson.

A year later, while plowing through her undergraduate work, Bethany gave birth to her first child, Cheryl. Six years later—and with her doctorate in view—Bethany conceived again…

In August of 1982, America became embroiled in the Lebanese Civil War. Arthur—then sergeant first class—was deployed. Bethany, working on her doctorate in human development and family studies, met a roguish man who introduced himself as Sam White. One night of passion left her pregnant with her second child, Autumn. The United States withdrew from the conflict in 1984 and Arthur—able to perform basic math—realized her infidelity.

Though he was willing to forgive her, Bethany blamed him putting his career as a soldier ahead of their family as the catalyst behind her unfaithfulness. The two separated, with them sharing custody of Cheryl and Bethany retaining sole custody of Autumn.

Years passed; Bethany tried and failed to find Sam White while Arthur succeeded at climbing the rungs of the military ladder. Meanwhile, something began to grow inside of Autumn: abilities inherited from her father began to display themselves… Able to manifest a dome of translucent, white energy around her, it wasn’t until a secondary effect of her abilities was discovered that the United States government took interest in the child. Given his connection to the girl’s mother, Arthur was ordered to retrieve Autumn.

As Autumn had been given her step-father’s surname upon her birth, Arthur claimed that the child was biologically his. With the backing of the United States government, paternity tests were falsified to support his claims and he fought for sole custody of the girl.

In order to secure a victory, Autumn’s psychosis was brought into question: the girl claimed she heard voices that urged her to do horrible things and given her mother’s background in psychology, the woman’s professional reputation was discredited. Ultimately, she was declared an unfit mother and stripped of her right to raise either of her girls.

Determined not to give up on winning her children back but realizing she would not win such a battle in the United States, Bethany Fisher became an expatriate…

The woman began campaigning in several European countries, looking for the means to appeal the ruling and secure even visitation rights. Her attempts failed and soon, both girls were considered adults. Bethany’s repeated efforts to rejuvenate her relationship with her eldest were met with hostility, with Cheryl blaming her mother and half-sister for tearing apart their family.

Though Autumn turned 18-years-old in 2000, Bethany’s attempts to locate her daughter—let alone contact her—have thus far yielded no results…

As the 2008-2009 school year began at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe, the United Nations’ Department of SPB Affairs invited Doctor Fisher to join the faculty at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe as one of the two headmasters, joining Sir Isaac Newton in administrating the school for teenage Neo-Sapiens. Seeing it as a chance to redeem herself as a mother and protect other super-powered children (much like her youngest daughter), the woman jumped at the chance… (NVAE #1)

Doctor Fisher hired members of Crimson Shadow to abduct her daughter, Doctor Cheryl Colbenson, in order to allow her to interrogate her as to the whereabouts of Autumn… At Cheryl’s prodding, Bethany was able to connect the dots and realized that certain events during the White War hinted at Autumn’s presence somewhere in New York City… (NV #103) Not long after, she was reunited with her late sister’s daughter, Chloe. (NV #104) The two met again at the wedding of Doctor Howell and Doctor Talley, but in the aftermath both Autumn and Chloe were laid to rest. (NV #113)

Michuru wrote:The idea for the schools is that they are overseen by the five founding members of the United Nations: USA, UK, France, Russia, and China. Maybe it would have made more sense to have one school in each of those nations, but then how do you divide up people from other nations? If there is a New Vindicators Academy of the United Kingdom and a New Vindicators Academy of France, what decides where a Dutch Neo-Sapien goes? The solution is to amalgamate them and have a school preside over a region. The NVAE has a broad region: in addition to taking in kids from all over the European continent, they're also getting SPBs from Australia and New Zealand and also Africa.

Anyway, it's a little weird having two people in charge of the one school. In my head, Fisher and Newton split the duties of the administrator. She oversees everything related to education--courses, curriculum, managing the teachers, ect. while Newton manages everything else: finance, public relations, transportation, security (hence why he's usually the one who briefs the New Vindicators come mission time) and so forth. I see both as also being in charge of dolling out the punishment, with her being an actual grownup and him being way too damn lenient.

JA’FARI
(Power Level 8)

Real Name: Ja’fari
Status: Alive; location unknown
Height / Weight: 5’10” / 158 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Black / Brown
Place of Birth: Riyadh, Saudi Arabia / October 2, 1992
Home Dimension: Oubliette-137
First Appearance: New Vindicators Academy of Europe #8
Tags: #alakhwan, #oubliette137, #prime, #sauriarabia

Physical Appearance: Ja’fari appears as a physically imposing teenage boy of Middle Eastern decent. Broad shouldered, he wears toned muscle under his thawb and a keffiyeh atop his skull.

Relationships: Jihad (father figure), Hanafi (half-brother), Hanbali (half-brother), Maliki (half-brother), Shafi’i (half-brother; deceased), Zaidi (half-brother), Ibadi (half-brother), Zahiri (half-brother)

Biography: In 1990, leaders of Al-Akhwan, a network of militant Islamists, observed a wondrous demonstration: an American scientist, Doctor Noah Meinstein, had found a way to bestow select Neo-Sapien abilities on children in vitro. Seeing the potential for this, Al-Akhwan, purchased eight Primes—all boys to be fathered by one of their members—a mysterious figure who would be known universal over a decade later as Jihad.

Though the world would not learn of Jihad’s Neo-Sapien ability until September 11, 2001, Al-Akhwan knew: Jihad was a man capable of creating seemingly limitless duplicates of himself. It was hoped that the eight children would manifest more than the absconded abilities they paid for and that each of the children would also possess their biological father’s talent for cloning himself.

Indeed, seven of the eight Primes showed themselves capable of creating duplicates of themselves. Each of the children was subjected to martial training and special training in the use of their respective abilities.

In Ja’fari’s case, this ability was one inherited from the Vindicator known as Onyx: Ja’fari is capable of transforming into living rock…

What began as a simple search and rescue mission took a turn for the worse... Led by Current and Quintessence, Greystone, Impasse and Sublime had journeyed to Oran, Algeria in search of the missing Mouloud Poundstone. The trail led them to the Islamic Relief Foundation and, posing as an Algerian, Greystone won passage into the group’s lower levels. There, he met three of Jihad’s clones and Ja’fari… (NVAE #8)

Greystone encountered Ja’fari again months later, in Uganda, while on a mission to rescue Doctor Bacon from the Ugandan Unity Brigade. Neither teen was alone, however: while Greystone had Ursa in his corner, Ja’fari was joined by his brother, Ibadi. (NVAE #19)

In the case of Ja'fari and his brothers, that something is mixing the DNA with some of the planet's most legendary heroes with a duplicating terrorist, resulting in... this.

Sadly, Al-Akhwan is a villain group that I'd like to utilize more, but I had a hard time justifying why Jihad would be so stupid as to attack the NVAE. Really, I'm just happy to be posting someone whose status doesn't have them at the school.

MANTICORE
(Power Level 8)

Real Name: Lexus Rauf
Status: Alive; enrolled at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe
Height / Weight: 6’0” / 180 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Dirty-blonde / Green
Place of Birth / Date of Birth: London, England / March 21, 1993
Home Dimension: Oubliette-137
First Appearance: New Vindicators Academy of Europe #1
Tags: #laputa, #neosapien, #nvae, #oubliette137, #turkey, #unitedkingdom, #volunteers

Physical Description: Lexus’s dirty-blonde hair is spiky and his skin is light brown; his eyes are as piercing as the fang-like teeth that fill his mouth. In his youth, he was seldom seen without an arrogant, determined smile; since his expulsion from the school, his strong jaw has been locked in a serious scowl.

Lexus wears a black, winter coat with a hood trimmed in white fur. A white ‘V’ slashes over his shoulders and down his chest. He wears loose-fitting black jeans and open-toed shoes.

Relationships: Tevfik Rauf / Zehirli (father; deceased), Elena Rauf / Lioness (mother; deceased), Richard Vogel / Lionheart (maternal grandfather; deceased), Mustafa Rauf (paternal uncle), Richard Vogel II / Lionheart II (maternal uncle), Edward Vogel / Tsabo (maternal uncle), Cornelis Noteboom / Apex (boyfriend; deceased), Juozas Cahan / Diamond Dust (boyfriend)

Biography: Tevfik Rauf and Elena Vogel both passed on their Neo-Sapien abilities to their son, Lexus. The Turkish Tevfik bestowed his ability to conjure a coat of poisonous spines over his body while his wife, the daughter of Richard Vogel (Lionheart), imbued her son with her father’s ability to transform into an anthropomorphic lion.

As Manticore, Lexus has the Neo-Sapien ability to transform into an anthropomorphic lion with a barbed tail that carries a potent toxin—abilities that made him a candidate for enrollment at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe.

On his first day of class, he met Cornelis Noteboom, a Neo-Sapien from the Netherlands. The two boys quickly became good friends and as the year continued, their friendship evolved into something more…

The night they decided to take their secret relationship further, they were discovered by the headmaster: Lexus’ grandfather, Richard Vogel…

Disapproving of their relationship, the headmaster planned to separate the boys. Feeling it would be a disservice to Cornelis to expel him, the man instead expelled his grandson from the school—notifying Lexus’ parents of what had happened and hoping that they would straighten him out…
Lexus began to sneak back onto the campus, offering cryptic warnings to the newer students. (NVAE #1) Slowly, the boy’s involvement with a terrorist organization, Laputa, came into suspect. It was only when one student—Vlad Radikovich, Candyman—defected to Laputa’s camp that the truth came out: Lexus’ parents had joined the group and installed him into the organization as well. Lexus’ loyalty remained with the school; however, due to a psychic trigger implanted by Lacuna, Lexus risked being possessed by the villain if he directly exposed the society’s aims. (NVAE #5)

When Laputa launched their final salvo on Vienna and the New Vindicators Academy of Europe, Lexus moved to help the New Vindicators take down the terrorist cell. In the process, Lacuna’s seed blossomed and he became one of her puppets. Prodigy was able to help him regain control however, when he informed the teen of the death of Cornelis Noteboom. (NVAE #10)

Following Laputa’s defeat, Lexus—along with the other three underaged members of Laputa—were given over to the school. There, Lexus attempted to make amends for the things Laputa had done by joining the Volunteers. (NVAE #13)

When Vienna again came under attack—this time by mercenaries hired by Siegfried—Lexus moved with several classmates to put a stop to the sandstorm-summoning sniper, Haboob. Moments before entering battle, however, Gaspar revealed that he had been the one who killed Lexus’ mother during the battle with Laputa. Lexus responded by knocking the teen out with one punch. (NVAE #17)

Following the Armada’s arrival in their dimension, Lexus teamed up with Magnitude and proceeded to one of the landing sites. There, they encountered Skein and Schwindel. Victorious, they returned to the school to plan a full-on assault of the Armada’s ship, the Elpis. Ultimately, Lexus remained behind, to protect the school and the non-combatants located there. (NVAE #25-26)

Over the summer that followed, Lexus began a relationship with follow Volunteer and recent graduate, Juozas. (NVAE #26)

PUCK
(Power Level 10)

Real Name: Puck
Aliases: Robin Goodfellow, Robyn Goodfellow
Status: Alive; enrolled in the New Vindicators Academy of Europe
Height / Weight: Varies
Hair / Eyes: Varies
Place of Birth / Date of Birth: Tournai, Francia / 503
Home Dimension: Oubliette-137
First Appearance: Illuminati #13
Tags: #fey, #nvae, #oubliette137

Physical Description: Puck’s appearance alters to suit the role he is to play. During the Blood War, Puck appeared as a satyr. When he brought the Illuminati to Avalon, he took on the guise of an old man and later a teenage boy. When he posed as a student at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe, Puck appeared as a teenage girl.

Biography: Auberon, a mage in the service of Clovis I, King of the Salian Franks, performed an arcane ritual in an attempt to create a copy of himself. Instead, the ritual took a fraction of his arcane power and instilled it into his shadow, creating a new entity: Puck.

Though Auberon has given life to other shadows—the Fey—he considers Puck his most trusted associate, even despite the creature’s penchant for mirth and deception.

Over the centuries, Puck has been dispatched by his master countless times. During the Blood War, however, Titania was cut down by Sebastian Tharivol, and Auberon vowed to remove himself from the affairs of man—taking up residence on the legendary island of Avalon.

Puck grew bored on the island and when Apocatastsis was revived, he saw a chance to have some fun once again. With the Aurelius missing, Puck pointed the magus’ daughter, apprentice, and latest incarnation of the Illuminati in the direction of Avalon. There, he convinced them to convince Auberon to call the Wild Hunt and search for the Anathema Ring. (Illuminati #13)

After learning of a new arcane threat potentially targeting the New Vindicators Academy of Europe, the Aurelius left to learn what he could. His investigation first took him to Avalon, where he asked Puck to pose as a student and keep an eye over two new allies: Dennis Schausteller and Martin Curie. Puck took the form of a teenage girl and remained at Dennis’ side, posing at the illusionist’s girlfriend. (NVAE #26)

Michuru wrote:I've always enjoyed Shakespeare's stuff. A Midsummer Night's Dream is easily my favorite, though The Scottish Play is up there. Puck is probably one of my favorite characters in all of literature. For anyone who hasn't read it, Puck is an agent of chaos who meddles in the affairs of five humans. He takes his marching orders from Oberon, but he finds some wiggle room in there to create some mischief along the way. Weirdly, though, what he does actually makes things better.

Since the inception of the campaign, I knew I wanted to include him somewhere. Early on, I was committed to the notion that everything sort of spiraled out of the Fallen, and had this idea that the fairies were a branch of the celestials. That was stupid though, and by the time I got to Puck, magic was becoming a larger part of the campaign world, and it made a bit more sense to have Puck be this creation of a magus.

In-game, Puck is pretty simple: he doesn't really fight, but delights in deceiving the silly mortals for his own amusement. He's not just a shapeshifter, but is capable of shapeshifting others (like maybe making a simple weaver with dreams of being an actor look like an ass), but it's low enough to not be effective. He's not going to turn someone like Doug into a flaming steel bird of death, but he can augment him a smidge... if he's so inclined.

WUNDERKIND
(Power Level 8)

Real Name: Remington “Remy” Eastman
Status: Alive; enrolled at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe
Height / Weight: 5’6” / 119 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Brown / Blue
Place of Birth / Date of Birth: Toledo, Ohio, United States / August 6, 2009 (17-years-old at the start of NVAE #26)
Home Dimension: Oubliette-731
First Appearance: Tabula Rasa #1
Tags: #neosapien, #nva, #nvae, #oubliette731, #refugee, #unitedstates

Physical Description: Remington is a svelte young man with a pale complexion. Piercing blues eyes shine above his eye cheekbones. He tends to keep his wavy brown hair at a medium length and usually swept back. He dresses in whatever is the latest fashion and wears an unaltered uniform.

Relationships: John Eastman (father), Diane Eastman (mother), Jim Loder / Cataclysm (best-friend), Suzette Shaw (ex-girlfriend)

Biography: John and Diane Eastman were high school sweethearts who got married in college. After graduation, John found work as a counselor at their old high school while Diane became a music teacher there. They bought their first house—a charming 4-bedroom they dreamed of filling with children. When they started trying to conceive, they succumbed to disappointment.

It was only after they celebrated ten years of wedded bliss that Diane found herself pregnant. A few months later, she miscarried. The couple continued trying. That winter, they conceived again, and again they miscarried.

It was only after eighteen years of marriage, fourteen years of trying, four miscarriages, and thousands spent on fertility that the couple conceived a baby that was carried to term. They named him Remington, and considered him their little miracle.

As an infant, his mother entered him in local “Most Beautiful Baby” competitions. Diane taught Remington to play piano and proclaimed him to be a virtuoso—a talent equal to the likes of Beethoven and Bach. When Remington began to write, his parents praised him as a literary genius. As he approached his teen years, Remington auditioned for some local commercials—parts he didn’t get—but he did find work as a catalogue model.

Remington was insufferable. His ego knew no bounds. In junior high, he bragged to his classmates how he was a genius pianist, brilliant writer, and a model. In an attempt to shut him up, one of his classmates punched him and shattered his jaw.

Remington had inherited his father’s Neo-Sapien power: Remington’s possessed hollow bones. While it makes him fragile, it also grants him uncanny agility. It also made him a candidate for the New Vindicators Academy—and the idea of living in New York appealed him. Saying his goodbyes to his parents, and dreaming of making it big in the Big Apple, Remington enrolled in the school.

His first semester, Remington’s ego continued to push people away. Even though he had been placed on a training squad (The Edge), teammates Miles Lancaster and Marlon Winters wanted nothing to do with him; though Natasha Kohlhagen harbored a crush on him, she was too nervous to reveal this.

The only person capable of tolerating his presence was the timid Suzette Shaw. Friendship blossomed into romance and Suzette gave herself to him. When Suzette’s roommate Kim Forbes broke up with Jim Loder, however, Jim began trying to sleep his way through the school, and he set his sights on Suzette. Desperate to be liked by the most popular boy in their class, Remington agreed to share Suzette with Jim and approached her with the idea. Hurt by his offering her, Suzette moved to leave, only for Remington to call her a whore. She rounded on him with a slap that broke his jaw, leaving his jaw wired shut for the second time in his life.

As the second semester began, Suzette started a relationship with one of the incoming freshmen, Dirk Loder, while Dirk’s roommate John Saxon began dating Kim. This sparked something in Jim and Remington, who—along with Jim’s teammates—moved to make John and Dirk’s first year at the school as miserable as they possibly could. While Remington’s abilities were hardly as useful as Abe Chobanian or Greg Foster’s, he elected to simply remind Suzette that she had been his first and made her doubt that someone as pious as Dirk would want her. (TR #2)
Remington and Derryl both took part in a piano recital in the city—one that was interrupted by Courtney Rage. Remington is quickly incapacitated, only to be saved by Derryl and Eric. (TR #11)

Following Miles’ expulsion from the school, he took on the nom de guerre Renegade. After working to try and save the school from Section 8 (TB #15), Renegade returned to the school the following night, abducted Remington from his bed, beat him within an inch of his life, and left him on the lawn of the school with a warning for Jim Loder: leave Cyndi and her training squad (Aisha Stein, Dirk, and John) alone. (TR #16)
The trauma did manage to awaken another aspect of Remington’s power: accelerated healing. Though far from instantaneous, it did prevent him from spending the rest of the semester in a body cast. Still, it did nothing to inhibit the pain that came with having his bones broken. That, coupled with the threat Renegade posed, kept Remington subdued.

As his sophomore year came to an end, Apocatastasis was revived moments before the Armada arrived. With his dimension doomed, a decision was made to sacrifice the planet in order to prevent either threat from causing any more harm. Before all was lost, Remington and his parents were evacuated to Oubliette-137. (NVAE #25)

The fun part is that he really can't back that mouth up. His powers only make it so hitting him is hard, but once he's hit? He should go down quick.

Man, I'd forgotten how tragic Dr. Fischer's backstory is. Natural human or not, she fits right in at the academy.

I'm loving this last group of builds, if for no other reason than it shows a few students (and villains like Ja'Fari) that can go toe-to-toe with the PC's for at least a little while. Also I kind of like how you've adapted the existence of the Fae and Faerie to meld with your settings mythology.

Great stuff.

As the great sage Lucy Lawless once said, "Whenever you notice something like that, a wizard did it."

"How do I fit faeries into Oubliette?"

A wizard did it.

"How do I explain how this character is fused with a demon?"

A wizard did it.

"Excalibur-"

Wizard.

It solves almost every issue at this point.

Looking through the characters, I came across something funny and ironic. Nyx is pretty much useless in the dark. Her powers depend on her shadow, so if the ambient light is dim enough, her shadow powers are negated. Given her codename, I find that freaking hilarious.

CAPACITOR
(Power Level 8)

Real Name: Ignatius Conrad Miller
Status: Alive, enrolled at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe
Height / Weight: 5’10” / 162 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Brown / Green
Place of Birth / Date of Birth: St. Deimos, Arizona, United States / August 29, 2038 (18-years-old as of NVAE #26)
Home Dimension: Oubliette-1,935
First Appearance: Armada #1

Physical Description: Tall and skinny, Nate wears a suit of lean muscle over his frame. Though upon arriving in Oubliette-137, he wore his hair long and tied back, being around Roger (and enduring the man’s unsolicited opinion on men with long hair) has prompted the youth to shave it down to a simple buzzcut. Nate is still new to this dimension and somethings are still odd to him… like having more than two outfits. He frequently forgets to change clothes, often wearing the same thing for several days.

Relationships: Alexander “Lex” Murphy (maternal grandfather; deceased), Kirstie Murphy (maternal grandmother; deceased), Liam Miller (father; deceased), Erica Miller (mother; deceased), Kayla Murphy (maternal aunt; deceased), Thomas Murphy (cousin; deceased), Penelope Kubichek (ex-girlfriend), Jude Kubichek-Miller (son), Roger Murphy (alternate timeline maternal grandfather / father figure), Lex Murphy (adopted brother), Doug Droll (adopted brother), Rose Arnett-Rexroth (adopted kid sister)

Biography: Nate’s life changed the day his son came into the world.

As his girlfriend gave birth, their friends were fighting the Wardens—a militia dedicated to eradicating the Neo-Sapien race once and for all—when a strange ship suddenly appeared in the sky. Nate left Kubichek and his newborn son to investigate, only to run into an Armada scouting party: Paragon and Womack.

The duo proved to be too much for Nate. He was evacuated by Merle Tremblay and taken to where the rest of his family was. Together, they devised a plan to strike at the invaders, and moved to execute it.

They failed, and Nate was one of the few survivors.

Nate had learned the truth, however: the invaders were not affiliated with the Wardens. They were not even from this dimension. They were not from any one dimension. The legion’s ship was capable of traversing time and space. In order to fuel their uncanny treks, they had to siphon all energy from a planet, and leave it devoid of life.

Wanting to protect his family, Nate pleaded with his attackers, and asked to join the Armada. Allowed to bring Kubichek and their son aboard with him, Nate devoted himself to a life traveling the multiverse, using his powers to bring the same confusion and terror he’d felt to other worlds.

Kubichek found herself disgusted with him. While he had acted to save her and their son, she couldn’t look past the notion that he had betrayed their entire world and joined up with the people responsible for the murder of their friends and family. Kubichek became withdrawn and quiet—remaining aboard the Elpis but talking to no one… not even Nate, who proceeded to help the Armada to eradicate other worlds.

With his conscience heavy, Nate began looking for an escape. He knew he could leave the Elpis whenever he wished, but also knew that doing so would be suicidal. For months, he continued to do as he was commanded, until mutineers moved to sabotage the Elpis. With it entangled in three dimensions simultaneously, Nate allied himself with those who dared to do what he once had: invade the Elpis.

Though he had no assurance that their endeavor would prove better than the denizens of St. Deimos’ had, Nate elected to join up with them. It was a gamble that paid off, as together, they were able to thwart the Armada. Nate, Kubichek, and Jude now found themselves stranded in a new dimension: Oubliette-137. There, they were taken in at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe. Thanks to his familial ties, Nate was accepted by the Murphy clan.

Vivifica filo subtegminis!

Nate hails from an alternate future where Neo-Sapiens are essentially shoved into a reservation where things eventually escalate to the point that they're hunted. As such, he's the product of two Neo-Sapiens who both had two Neo-Sapiens for parents, giving him four different power templates to draw from. The idea here is that his mother inherited her father's electrical powers and her mother's force field/reflex aura. Meanwhile, his father had inherited a hypnotic gaze and super-hearing from his parents. Some of these powers aren't that developed in Nate (Kirstie's powers and the gaze), while others function a bit differently (he doesn't heal like Lex does, nor does he really have the full array of tools). What Nate does have is combat ability. He's hitting his caps, courtesy of a lifetime of fighting for another day.

There is so much about Nate's character I'd adore exploring if I ever had the time to. I imagine he wakes up screaming from nightmares stemming from the guilt of him serving in the Armada. For people like Paragon or the Embalming Man, killing billions of people was nothing. For Nate? He's not handling it so well. Further, Nate's accustomed to living in a war zone. Having a bed and pillows and actual meals is a new experience for him. Even after three months of living on his new home world, he's going to have some major PTSD from his home dimension.

Further, I imagine Nate would really take issue with groups like Crux--seeing them as sort of the evolutionary ancestor to groups like the Wardens. I originally intended for Roger and Nate to end up in the tank with Lex and Stephen in NVAE #28, but realized that Nate would make that less about Stephen and more about him. I imagine he'd lose it and--once he was out--make sure none of them got to leave there safely. It wasn't a direction I wanted to take the session, so... he was removed from it. Still, there you go.

Yeah, I’ve been really bad about doing this... I have a backlog of characters who need updates and a bunch who just keep posted. :( Time is a precious commodity. I’m aiming to get at least two new builds up each week.

Your setting is somehow both ‘traditional supers’ and fresh and exciting at the same time. To do that, I need to make up some really weird stuff. Not so, for you.

Thank you! That’s honestly one of the best compliments I’ve ever had! I’ve always been a bit obsessed with the genre, but I’m well aware of the problems of it. Mostly, I’m just doing what I wish other stories about supers did: recognize that not everyone wins the genetic lottery, have people get creative with what they have, recognize that despite the powers they’re a person first and foremost... Weird stuff like that.
