#1: Rumble

Post by Michuru »

RUMBLE (Power Level 8 / 10)

Real Name: Atlanta Jane White
Height / Weight: 5’8” / 120 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Platinum Blonde / Blue
Place of Birth / Date of Birth: San Francisco, California / May 17, 1989
Home Dimension: Oubliette-137
First Appearance: Vindicators #700
Tags: #aesir, #nva, #oubliette137, #usa

Physical Description: Much of Atlanta’s appearance is shaped by her religious upbringing: she believes men should have short hair and women should have long hair. However, she dislikes having her hair in her face, and keeps it frequently pulled back—typically in pigtails or a hasty ponytail. She secretly laments that she never learned to braid her hair.

Atlanta’s religious views further influence her clothing choices: believing that women should wear skirts or dresses, she is frequently seen in a blouse and denim skirt. Her uniform has a skirt, and she wears tights under it in an attempt to preserve some degree of modesty. Further, she wears a white utility belt that lets her carry a first aid kit into combat.

Relationships: Sif (maternal grandmother), Stephen White (The Aurelius; father), Clementine Scarlet (Phenomenon; mother), Michael Luom (Mithril; boyfriend), Jeremy Carlson (Deimos; friend)

Biography: When the New Vindicators first met Atlanta Jane White… they didn’t know what to think. On the outside she was a cold and cool young woman, an aesthetic image of the dainty southern belle. At the time, she was attending the Bethel Baptist Bible Academy for Young Girls, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains in northern Georgia. They had come to investigate a murder at her school, one that was being blamed on another Neo-Sapien student. Their suspect had fled into the mountains and Atlanta offered to help them find her.

As the daughter of two former Vindicators, the Aurelius and Phenomena, the young men and women wondered why Atlanta hadn’t been sent to study at the New Vindicators Academy. They were quick to judge the young woman, dismissing her as a spoilt princess born without the talents possessed by either parent.

They believed they didn’t need her.

When she left on her own, fighting her way through the other girl’s uncontrollable powers and calming her down… they quickly realized that it was she who had never truly needed them.

It would be several more years before Atlanta’s mother would permit her to leave the school she had all but been raised in and attend the New Vindicators Academy of America through her senior year. Her powers, inherited from her mother, cause of a surge of hormones within Atlanta’s physiology that leave her in a perpetual rush of fight-or-flight response. At present, this enhances Atlanta’s senses and physicality; dilated blood vessels increase leg and arm muscles. It seems as though the release of key nutrients within the body has perfected her constitution- which helps to combat the rigors such a stress response would otherwise have on her body.

Though theorized that her body had not yet reached the pinnacle of her powers, her strength had many speculate that she would inevitably follow in her mother’s footsteps and ascend to the ranks of the Vindicators. However, Atlanta made it no secret that her intention is to live as normal a life as she possibly can after graduation. Primed to leave the New Vindicators Academy of America for medical school, Atlanta’s medical studies helped her classmates countless times in their initial battle against the Affiliation. (New Vindicators #1-12)

Such expertise was called upon again during the Trials. Stranded on an island, Rumble happened upon an ambush; some of the graduates had been hired by the Wisent to kill Lodestone and when the hero’s squadron had fallen to the effects of Carrion’s powers- they made their move.

Rumble’s strength held off the attackers until help arrived- in the form of a hodgepodge of heroes from the Asian Academy. Among the would-be saviors was Brass, a young hero with powers, training and a background close to Rumble’s own. The two put their heads together to stabilize the American team and later went on an excursion to help their patients pass into the Final Trial. On such an outing the two’s feelings became apparent and a kiss was shared- marking the beginning of Rumble’s first relationship. (New Vindicators #13-15)

Biography (Continued): Several weeks later, Rumble took a leave from the school to vacation in Laos with her new boyfriend. Brass introduced her to his grandparents and Rumble began to further her own medical training before returning to the states. (NV #17)

Coming home on an emotional high, it wasn’t long before tragedy struck: Rumble received word that her father had mysteriously vanished and was assumed dead. This news came at a disastrous time as the girl also learned her mother had fallen in combat, fighting the Sixth Reich in Berlin.

With both parents declared dead, Rumble became the heir to both estates. The Illuminati soon contacted her, telling her that they had reason to believe her father was still alive. She quickly liquidated her mother’s assets, funneling them to fund the paranormal investigators and moved to oversee their latest investigation. Early on, the search caused her path to cross with that of a former classmate, Deimos.

While Deimos harbored a crush on Atlanta, they were feelings she did not return. Still, as their hunt for the Aurelius took them to Mount Everest, in search of the hidden city of Shambhala. Separated from the rest of their team, the former New Vindicators found themselves stranded. While Atlanta’s abilities helped her adapt to the harsh climate, Deimos was not as fortunate. In an attempt to save his life, Atlanta elected to strip both of them down, to use her own body’s temperature to save her teammate. It was a gesture that only seemed to encourage the Nephilim’s advances. (Illuminati #12 - 18)

Ultimately, Atlanta found her father, but their reunion was short-lived: the immortal Nephilim Apocatastasis had been revived and Earth’s strongest heroes gathered to fight him. Charging through the portal, Rumble found herself alone and confronted by the Nephilim Cimejas. The Nephilim managed to possess her body, intent to turn her against her allies. The first opponents Cimejas found were a group of graduates from the Tokyo school: Melody, Brickhouse, Saya, Split, and Rumble’s boyfriend, Brass. When reinforcements arrived—including Odin—Rumble was freed from Cimejas’ control. As the heroes tended to their injuries, Odin revealed to Rumble that her grandmother was Sif, one of the Æsir and the source of her powers. (NV #43, 48)

Not long after, their group was attacked by another Nephilim, Dumah, who slew Brickhouse before he was defeated. (NV #49) Still, the heroes pushed forward to battle Apocatastasis. For the battle, Rumble was entrusted with three artifacts: Megingjord, and Jarn Griepr were designed to imbue whoever wore them with the strength necessary to heft Mjolnir, but in Rumble’s case, they served to bolster her strength to uncanny levels—giving her enough power to slay Apocatastasis single-handedly. Still, the immortal rose up after her onslaught and continued the war. Nevertheless, the heroes ultimately found a way to defeat him, and rather than allow them all to be captured by Black Box, Drew Jenkins scattered everyone across the globe. (NV #50)

Early into the Neo-Sapien Diaspora, Rumble and Brass turned up in the news, saving a bus from going over a bridge in Queens. (NV #61) Rumble was looking for Deimos, who had not arrived at the final battle with Apocatastasis. Her obsession with finding the half-demon, coupled with her confession of their time on Mount Everest, caused Brass to begin to doubt their relationship. During their search, Rumble revealed to her boyfriend that she knew how to wield arcana. (NV #65 & 67)

Despite being wanted by Black Box, Rumble and Brass broke into the Vindicators’ compound at the United Nations. Realizing that her status as an Æsir meant her mother was also immortal, Rumble feared the woman was entombed. However, she discovered her crypt destroyed, as well as the memorial for the fallen members of the Vindicators VII. (NV #68)

The couple soon found Coldfire and Phobos engaged in battle against Sentries. Though the foursome triumphed, the battle brought them the attention of Deimos. A battle began, one which cost Atlanta her life: Deimos cleaved his soul-weapon through her. She did not stay dead long, rejoining the battle shortly after. (NV #69-70)

While Deimos’ defection might have ended whatever relationship woes Atlanta and her beau were experiencing, a new complication arose when Melody arrived in the States. The half-Japanese girl made no secret of her feelings for Brass—now calling himself Mithril—nor of her intentions to steal him from Atlanta. On an outing with the Laotian, Melody stole a kiss—one that was observed by Phobos and captured in a photograph he forwarded to Atlanta. The surging emotions summoned Libra, who proceeded to challenge Melody to a duel. Seeing her rival losing, Atlanta quickly figured out a way to interfere: by traveling to the Astral Plane, Atlanta and the Aurelia were able to circumvent Libra’s barrier. Despite their best efforts, however, Libra managed to slay both Atlanta and Melody. (NV #72)

After ending their relationship, Mithril returned to Tokyo with Melody’s remains. Newly single, Atlanta and Phobos became closer, and though he wanted something more, their relationship never developed further than friendship. (NV #75 & 78)

Atlanta soon gave in to the Aurelia’s pleading and began to teach her what limited magic she knew. Unbeknownst to her, her doppelganger from another dimension had been exiled to this one: a version of Atlanta who had embraced her arcane heritage. When the White Witch made a grab for the Imperial Regalia of Japan, she came into conflict with the Tokyo-based Vindicators. In the ensuing battle, the White Witch claimed the life of the Rising Sun. It was an act that pushed Sclera over the edge, leading him to attack the Atlanta native to this realm.

When Atlanta resurrected for a third time, she took in the sight of the White Witch’s body. She took it as a sign from God—a message regarding her wavering resolve—and elected to remain in Tokyo, to help the short-handed Vindicators and rekindle her relationship with Mithril. (NV #79)

As the outbreak began, Silverback—diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease—knew that his wards would soon be requiring medical assistance. He reached out to Bestiary, Fathom, and Atlanta, asking them to return to the New Vindicators Academy to help with the infirm. Atlanta returned to the United States with Mithril and rejoined the Rogue Vindicators. (NV #82)

It was a decision she would come to regret. After the defeat of the Basileus and the Aeolian Empire, Deimos struck at the school in the middle of the night. Atlanta was again slain, only to resurrect due to her Æsirian heritage. Her boyfriend was not so fortunate: Deimos had killed him. (NV #100)

In the weeks that followed Mithril’s death, Atlanta repeatedly committed suicide. When her friends confronted her about her mental wellbeing, she left the school. Months later, Lodestone launched an investigation into Autumn Colbenson. In dire need of allies, Lodestone reached out to Atlanta, only to find her now trying to put herself into a diabetic coma. After a brief confrontation, Lodestone left Atlanta on the floor of her new apartment, mired in depression. (NV #103)

Michuru wrote:Okay, so... going back to the very beginning... Rumble is the first build I posted eons ago on the AtomicThinkTank. Initially, coming into M&M from D&D, I had this terrible mindset of characters starting off at a low PL and "leveling up" as they progressed. That being said, the original Rumble was a PL 5 character and pretty terrible. That build was not at all reflective of how I approach builds. So, I retouched her in a few places, and polished up her biography. Viola! Here we are...

Originally, Rumble employed Adrenal Surge, which did not fit at all how her powers are described. Perpetually in a state of fight-or-flight response meant that her scores shouldn't be dropping, so... that was nixed in lieu of just upping her Strength and Constitution. PL 8 Atlanta sports some dismal Attack and Defense to represent her minimal self-defense training. This gets upped a bit in the PL 10 build to reflect a bit more experience. By this point, she's been through enough that she's better figured out how to handle herself in a fight.

The magic is where I spent the most time. As I said, I'm an old school D&D player, and one of the biggest influences I had in my world's approach to magic came from prodigyduck's old ATT thread. Seriously, prodigyduck, I don't think I've ever thanked you for how awesome your builds are. You are amazing. Thank you so much.

PD converted the 3.5 spellbook (or at least A-M) and some of that was shamelessly absorbed into some of my builds. With regards to Rumble's magic, however, I don't go as in-depth as he does. Really, it feels like a cop out on my part to not have this area of her sheet more complicated, but... it is what it is.

My original intention was that Atlanta would become obsessed with using magic to bring back Michael. The encounter with the White Witch revealed the existence of alternate dimensions to her and showed her a fraction of what she could potentially become. The process of how to heal death would take her into the realm of healing and knitting flesh back together. She would experiment on restoring her father's arm, with the intention of having him help her learn to resurrect the dead. He'd reluctantly decline, sending her even deeper into darkness. For her, it would be like... she had forsaken her beliefs to delve deeper into magic, only to be told that what she wants to do would be unethical.

Still, that plan is years old, and the plan with Martin works too. Factor in that post-Armada, the NVAE game is going to be getting more involved in magical goings on, and it really makes more sense for the cast to have encountered the man...

ProdigyDuck's thread was absolutely my favorite on both the ATT & Roll Call- I was bummed when he FINALLY got through the entire D&D catalog, because that was an absolute blast going through all of his various builds and commenting on the race and what I thought the merits of each thing were.

There have been some very iconic guys in every iteration of Roll Call: Kreuz, MDSnowman, Taliesin, Thorp, uh... you... (Seriously, you're awesome, Jab) but you're right about PD's conversions being an absolute delight. For starters, the nostalgia of the thread alone... Seeing the pictures from a book I hadn't cracked open in years was always a treat, but then the builds themselves... From making each beholder's stalk a different minion (it seems so obvious, but I probably would not have thought about doing it that way) or just the sheer beauty of the death slaad...

Like I said, the biggest influence his conversions had on me was my approach to magic. I did not want Magic to be this catchall power in my campaign world. Even with the plot limitations I drafted, I wanted it to just be a different sort of power. I had considered using a the Energy Points variant from the Mastermind's Manual (pg. 72)--one that would be perfect if ever someone wanted to run a 2E Naruto game--but then I happened upon his thread, saw his spell conversions, and realized that was what I wanted to do.

He take a very creative approach to his builds and I am perpetually in awe of the things he comes up with.

Ditto. I've been accused of giving her plot armor, because I like her so much. For me, I enjoy the strife that comes from her beliefs being in direct conflict with what she is (a magic-wielding god). She's fun to torture.

You enjoy strife? I had no idea

She's an immortal so I don't see how she has plot armor. She certainly sees more than her share of suffering.

#19: Deimos

Post by Michuru »

DEIMOS
(Power Level 8 / 10)

Real Name: Jeremy Carlson
Height / Weight: 5'9" / 145 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Bald (black) / Glowing Black (blue)
Place of Birth / Date of Birth: Gloucestershire, England / November 25, 1988
Home Dimension: Oubliette-137
First Appearance: New Vindicators #1
Tags: #abaddon, #classof2007, #nephilim, #nva, #oubliette137, #usa

Physical Description: Deimos appears as a physically fit young man. He keeps his head shaved to show off his tattoo—a black flame that begins at the base of his skull and reaches over the top and sides of his head, giving some semblance of hair when viewed from far off. His arm shows faint scars from years of cutting.

Deimos is seldom seen wearing anything that isn’t black. In his civilian identity, he favors black tees and black jeans. As a student of the New Vindicators Academy, he refused to wear the uniform. On the occasions where he was absolutely forced to wear it, he wore his modified version, which he had turned into a vest that neither provided him with protection from harm or the elements. Following his time spent as a patient of the Spider, he took to wearing a straight jacket, despite the obvious disadvantage it could potentially yield in combat.

Relationships: Abaddon (father), Evangeline Carlson (mother), Jeffrey Carter (Phobos; twin brother; deceased), Josette O’Reilly (maternal aunt; deceased), John O’Reilly (uncle; deceased), Taria Reynolds (Enyo; ex-girlfriend), Atlanta White (Rumble; crush), Magnus Loder (Lodestone; enemy), Ben Altair (Frostbite; enemy)

Biography: Evangeline Carlson was an American who felt the best way to spend the summer between her high school and college years was to backpack across Europe. It was in her travels that she met a man—a suave and charming rogue of a man who stole her heart and made passionate love to her one night in France. The next morning he was gone... but he had left her with his seed.

Twin boys were conceived that night and Evangeline learned of them not long after. The pregnancy proceeded disturbing fast—with her going into labor not three months after meeting the children's father. She gave birth to her sons in Gloucestershire, England and told her tale to the doctor; the man hadn't believed her farfetched story until he delivered the twin brothers—each with burning black eyes.

Believing them to be spawns of the devil, the man plotted to drown the boys. Learning of the plot, Evangeline took the boys and fled to Bishop's Cleeve where she met a priest who helped her flee the wrath of the people the respected doctor had gathered. Still, the two were separated—
Evangeline escaping with one of the children while the other was still in the hands of Father Anthony.

Still, Evangeline didn't keep her child long. She managed a return to the States and left her son with her sister Josette. Josette and her husband, Doctor John O’Reilly, raised young Jeremy Carlson as their own.

In his earlier years, Jeremy was the epicenter for violence. His new family had spared no expense in attempting to give Jeremy every chance he could get and he received each the same way. Every school he went to, he started fights. He had no respect for authority. He was the poster child for juvenile delinquency. Halfway through his junior year, he ran away from home—intending to turn to a life of petty theft to provide for himself. His first night out he was arrested... and released thanks to the influence of the Wisent.

Jeremy was chosen by the Wisent to be one of the founding members of the Bisons, the cornerstone of the man's new criminal empire. It was through the seven young people that he funneled his orders and thanks to the drug (Boost) provided that Jeremey's Nephilim powers manifested.

Adopting the name Deimos, Jeremy served with the utmost loyalty. Still, his loyalty to his employer was rivaled by his loyalty to Taria Reynolds (Enyo). The young girl stole Deimos' heart and together they began to plot their retirement. Bogart learned of their plans to leave and commanded the others to hunt them down. Believing his beloved already claimed by the retaliation, Deimos fled to the home of his aunt and uncle, seeking solace with them.

Enyo had not been killed however; she had been given a choice: betray her lover or be executed. She set a car bomb intended for Deimos and claimed only the young Nephilim's aunt in the explosion. Deimos used the confusion to fake his own death and turned to the New Vindicators Academy—a group he had learned about from Bogart.

NEW VINDICATORS: radix malorum est cupiditas – Early on, Deimos was viewed as a possible ally to the Affiliation. He was approached by Blitzkrieg, Black Widow, and Lurker and given the offer to join them in the coming war. Claiming himself to be too much of a wild card to take orders from anyone, Deimos chose to voice his decision with a blast of hellfire. With Frostbite's help, the young man was able to hold his own against the villains.

In the wake of numerous students’ deaths, the rest of the senior class was ordered to meet with psychiatrist Jason Pickford. Deimos failed to attend his session—opting instead to spend it with a girl (Shade) he met in the lobby several floors below Pickford’s office. (NV #4)

Following his humiliating defeat at Tide’s hands, Deimos journeyed with his teammates to Japan where he met Yukimura Sanada. The man bestowed Deimos with a katana he claimed was destined to slay one of the Seven Fallen—a group which he said Deimos’ father was counted amongst. Deimos' ability with the sword was then tested by Sarutobi Sasuke, the immortal swordsman found Deimos lacking in fighting prowess and handed him another humiliating loss. (NV #6)

While on a date with Shade, Deimos was abducted by his dead aunt Josette and tortured for days before his companions from the Academy arrived. Though they saved him, they did not encounter his aunt, leading to his classmates’ beginning to question his sanity. (NV #8)

Caught in an explosion meant to claim his life, Deimos lost the use of his right eye. Despite such injuries, he participated in the White War—where his katana was stolen by his half-brother, the Shadow, and used to slay Samael. Immediately after watching his chance to kill his father stolen from him, Deimos’ consciousness was siphoned into Godai’s beast form. (NV #11-12)

NEW VINDICATORS: sic semper tyrannis – Throughout the Trials, Deimos clashed with a young man with similar powers. This youth, calling himself Phobos, possessed a background shockingly similar to Deimos’. Their histories coincided with each other, leaving Phobos to conclude that Deimos was the long lost brother he had been told of by Father Anthony. Ultimately the two collided during the Final Trial—with Deimos failing to overpower his brother even in his beast form. (NV #13-15)

NEW VINDICATORS: memento mori – Now a graduate of the New Vindicators Academy, Deimos found himself again going up against Bogart. He learned the truth of Enyo’s betrayal and was forced to tell his companions of his involvement with the Bisons. Leading the New Vindicators in a valiant charge against his former allies, Deimos was shot in the chest and administered Knitter, a new drug the Bisons were peddling. He had seen their lackeys inject themselves with the serum and regenerate fatal wounds. Though it saved his life and restored his lost eye, it took away his powers—leaving Deimos as a normal human.

Distraught over the loss of his Nephilim powers, Deimos turned to Shade to comfort him, only to have their love making interrupted by Frostbite. It was then that Shade was revealed to be nothing more than an illusion created by Deimos’ already fragile mindset. Determining that his aunt’s attack on him as well as the graffitied wall left by his mother were additional illusions, Deimos was declared mentally unstable and turned over to the care of Doctor Pickford.

VINDICATORS: coup d’état – While responding to an attack on the Spider by the Sentry, the Vindicators watched as Deimos was unleashed in the assault. With his new-found freedom the young man evoked his restored powers and aided his former allies in stopping the attempt on Pandora’s life. Freed from his father, Deimos began working alongside the Vindicators before leaving them to start his own private war against Doctor Pickford, who Deimos now knew to be his father, Abaddon.

ILLUMINATI: Wild Hunt – Thanks to Puck’s manipulations, Deimos found himself going to Avalon with the Illuminati. There, the heroes were charged by Auberon with the search for the Anathema Ring. As the ring was also hunted by Abaddon, Deimos eagerly joined the group’s quest.

Ultimately, when the heroes came up against Purgatory, all of the Illuminati save Deimos and Xrix were abducted.

NEW VINDICATORS: para bellum – When Loess arrived at the Chapel, looking for Rumble, she was surprised to find Deimos and shocked to hear his tale of survival. Loess amended her plans from simply saving Lodestone to include rescuing Rumble and the Illuminati as well and Deimos found himself temporarily joining forces with the Vindicators once more.

NEW VINDICATORS: et spe – After their forces were scattered en route to facing Apocatastasis, Deimos teamed up with the Damned. They first fought Vasaggo and then Valefar, both ancient Nephilim resurrected by Apocatastasis and effortlessly returned to the grave by Deimos. (NV #41)

The pair proceeded, only to encounter Deimos’ ex-girlfriend, Enyo. Though Deimos bested her, he refused to kill her, much to the Damned’s chagrin. The younger teen attacked Deimos, and though Deimos nearly killed him, the Damned used the last of his strength to cast a spell that banished Deimos to the Astral Plane. (NV #44)

Though he was trapped there for some time, he was eventually rescued by Willoughby… (NV #50)

NEW VINDICATORS: beatae memoriae – Deimos was rescued from the Astral Plane by Willoughby and went to work for him. His first assignment was to travel to Japan, but in order to shield him from Sanada Yukimura’s powers, Willoughby embedded the Eye of Polyphemus into Deimos—a magical artifact that would shield its host from all manner of detection, but would kill them if removed. (NV #61)

Deimos headed to Japan where he clashed with another member of the Sanada Ten Brave: Kakei Juzou. After beating him, Deimos took on two at once: the lovers, Mochizuki Rokurou and Yuri Kamanosuke. Once he felled them, the Miyoshi brothers entered the battle with the Nephilim. Deimos soon bested all of the ninja clan, forcing Sarutobi Sasuke and Kirigakura Saizou into the fray. (NV #64-65)

Once he was victorious, Deimos allowed himself to finally rest. Shutting his eyes, he heard the voice of the late Patrick Goodman taunting him. He was joined by Michuru Himura, another figure Deimos knew to be deceased. Together, the two presented Deimos’ next opponent: Enyo. The young woman revealed that she could now control her hellfire beast and proceeded to attack Deimos in it—all while Goodman and Himura commentated on the battle. When Deimos killed Enyo, the trio left for America to located Abaddon.

It was there that they ran into Rumble and Brass. Taking what he had learned from Enyo, Deimos transformed into a hellfire beast and killed Brass. He pulled Rumble into a passionate kiss—a gesture she returned.

After running into Phobos and some of Deimos’ former classmates, another battle began. Though he lost a hand fighting Coldfire, Deimos pushed on. After Rumble killed Coldfire, Deimos encountered a woman—a mysterious Esper known only as E.C. revealed to be mind-controlling Rumble into helping Deimos.

As they continued to slaughter Deimos’ former allies, it was revealed to Deimos that the entire battle was a dream conjured by Blanche Gareth. Deimos then revealed that he had known it was a dream, but enjoyed taking revenge on the people who had given up on him so many times. Remarking on Deimos’ indomitable will, Libra bestowed three pieces of the Areopagus armor on him: the Capricorn helm, the Gemini earrings, and the Scorpio breastplate. (NV #66)

Waking up in Tokyo, moments after defeating the Sanada Ten Brave, Deimos returned to New York and quickly sought out the Vindicators. First running into Rumble and Brass, Deimos opted to prove his resolve and ended Rumble’s life. (NV #69)

The Rogue Vindicators gathered to avenge the Georgian, only for Deimos to claim another life: Deimos used the katana he had brought back from Japan to end Savant’s life.

Death proved a minor obstacle for Rumble, however, and she soon joined the heroes in the melee. Ultimately, it was Bulwark who decided the battle: destroying the Capricorn helm and tackling Deimos out of the Empire State Building and riding him into the street. Thanks to the protection granted to him by his hellfire armor, Deimos survived the experience, but was injured enough to force him to retreat. (NV #70)

NEW VINDICATORS: dulcis amor – Months later, after the wounds he had received from his last battle with the Vindicators had healed, Deimos caught Magnus Loder appearing on television, pleading for Lex Sway to take part in the former’s pending nuptials. Though Magnus’ message was coded, Deimos figured out the meaning behind it: the wedding was taking place at the New Vindicators Academy of America.

Deimos watched the ceremony from the top of the school and prepared to descend as the officiant asked if anyone had any objections. He was stopped, however, by Lex Sway, only to be released elsewhere. (NV #75)

NEW VINDICATORS: felo de se – After the wedding, the Vindicators’ roster experienced some drastic changes: Coldfire found himself as the de facto leader for a period and his team was plagued by seemingly random attacks executed by twin Nephilim, Castor and Pollux. In reality, these twins were working with Deimos—a distraction that would lure the heroes away from their Manhattan base. While the group’s heavy hitters were away, Deimos attacked Coldfire’s pregnant wife and their children—claiming his employer’s plan was to push the hero over the edge.

Though Quint tried to save the children, Deimos made short work of his clones. Before he could kill the original, however, he was stopped by Boson. The young woman then proceeded to hold Deimos off long enough for Quintessence to retrieve the other Vindicators, forcing another retreat from Deimos—this time with hostages: Coldfire’s wife and eldest child.

Coldfire pursued, only to realize too late that it had been part of Deimos’ plan. The Vindicator was led to Pisces, another of Deimos’ cohorts. Pisces revealed that both she and Deimos were agents of Semyazza, one of the Fallen, whose ultimate goal was the eradication of all life on Earth.

While Coldfire faced off against Pisces, Deimos took on Phobos with Libra and John Doe bearing witness to the battle. It was a battle Deimos won, but as he toyed with Phobos, his brother opted to deny him the very thing he wanted: drawing one of Libra’s xiphos, Phobos trapped himself inside Libra’s barrier and forced the Areopagus to take his life.

Phobos’ death sent John into a rage and he quickly overpowered Deimos. After demonstrating how effortlessly he could beat the Nephilim, he abandoned the battle, knowing it was the simplest way to hurt the man. As he left Deimos, Libra revealed the truth to the Nephilim: John Doe was an amnesic Abaddon—Deimos’ father. (NV #80)

NEW VINDICATORS: contraria contrariss curantur – Semyazza recycled tactics in a bid to separate the more combat-ready Vindicators from their allies: by having the heroes chase after Contagion, it left the New Vindicators Academy unprotected against Deimos and Libra’s advance. In the Memorial Gardens, Deimos took the life of Steve Brown, the father of a deceased classmate. When the pair arrived in the sublevel, Rumble and Brass moved to stop their procession. Brass was injured and drew back on Rumble’s orders, only for Deimos to kill the blonde again.

Deimos then met the Affiliation. After cutting off Mirth’s hand and stabbing Morph through the stomach, his katana snapped—an effect of Fluke’s abilities.

Arriving in the infirmary, Deimos killed Mia Stanton and moved to take one of Coldfire’s children hostage again. After resisting Adonis’ powers, Deimos added Adonis to his list of hostages. The Affiliation’s leader distracted him long enough to get the tip of Deimos’ broken sword and stabbed it into the Nephilim’s neck, forcing him to release his hostages. Cornered and desperate, Deimos attacked Contagion and the heroes moved to save him rather than pursue the Nephilim. (NV #90)

NEW VINDICATORS: sanguis ac ferroque – Deimos joined the other Areopagus as Aeolus and Eos arrived in Chicago. When the Vindicators arrived, Libra moved to challenge Coldfire, to ensure his power was used to destroy the world. At the last second, Deimos took the offered xiphos, accepting Libra’s challenge instead. (NV #97)

Wanting revenge for stealing his change to kill Phobos, Deimos moved to slay Libra. During the battle, Deimos began to transform into a hellfire beast, only to overpower his demonic nature, so that he could fight the Areopagus on his own. Ultimately, Deimos triumphed over Libra, killing him and taking his rings for himself. (NV #98)

Days after the Vindicators repelled the Aeolian invasion, Deimos attacked the New Vindicators Academy of America. Ending the lives of several of the school’s residents—Mithril, Breeze, and part of Lodestone. When Anomaly arrived and accepted Deimos’ unspoken challenge on behalf of the school, it accidentally triggered Libra’s abilities: forming a barrier around the entire school and giving Deimos access to everyone’s powers.

Ultimately, the Vindicators found a backdoor out of Libra’s barrier and left Deimos alone inside the force field—unable to exit it until either he or every resident of the school dies. (NV #100)

Michuru wrote:Months later, I finally get around to fulfilling Tattooedman's request for an updated Deimos... I'm a man of my word. I just... procrastinate like there's no tomorrow.

Deimos' original build was clunky, due to player input. The player wanted to slowly turn Deimos into Lurker, as its reflected in the Darkness Control array. Here, I've abandoned that. All he really uses in the narrative is the Obscure, and there have been times when Portal's infravision has seen through it, so... no need to counter all visual senses.

Also gone are the old Nephilim drawbacks. Others have mentioned how unnecessary they are--how infrequent they show up, that it's pointless to reward the players for them.

In it's stead, Deimos has a slower evolution overtime. He picks up a few new feats: Blind-Fighting, to reflect him compensating for a lost eye for a while, and the times he's been denied senses while fighting Enyo; Second Chance and Ultimate Effort to showcase that indomitable will he's depicted as having... You get the drift. He does lose a point of Equipment and the Luck ranks when he ceases to be a PC and goes over to the Dark Side. These points let him pick up the effects the Eye of Polyphemus grant him. I initially wrote this up as a device, but given that it kills him if it's removed, I feel it being a McGuffin that gives him these abilities is more accurate.

Lastly, the Areopagus artifacts... He only has Capricorn for a short time, and he picks up Libra late in the arc, but still... Also, there's a small hole in the plot where the Libra rings are concerned: the Gemini clones don't get the Scorpion armor, but when he attacks the school, the clones can mimic powers? A wizard did it. No, really, Libra was a wizard, so...

Seriously, though, I think the assumption I'll go with is, he mimicked a power and the clone came out with it. It's flimsy, but it'll work.

I don't think I've wanted to see a character die as badly as I wanted to see Deimos die. While his defeat leaves open the potential for his return at some point through some sort of deus ex machina and he has value as a villain...I hated this character so, so very much. Even if he never pops his head up again something about his fate just seems unsatisfactory to me, but it works well in the story...so there's that.

Physical Appearance: Kelly is a lithe young girl with long red hair. Though most comfortable in a T-shirt and jeans, her style has changed since enrollment, with her electing to emulate Rose’s stylish and flirty style. Similarly, her uniform matches Rose’s: sleeveless and ending in a short, frilled skirt, which she wears with wrist gloves and knee-high boots.

Relationships: Dana O’Laughlin (Fey; maternal cousin)

Biography: Little is known about Kelly’s life prior to her enrollment at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe. Since arriving in Vienna, she has been pulled into Rose’s orbit, joining the freshman’s group.

Kelly was born from necessity: given the way I set up the world (powers being hereditary), it made sense that powers would not be exclusive at the school. Established NPCs would have siblings and cousins who possessed a similar power set, albeit with some variation so that they're not the same character. Given that Fey gets offed in the narrative, it made sense to recycle her build with a family member who can control it. Plus, I needed someone to be the Amanda Seyfried to Rose's Rachel McAdams.
