Background: Already a shy and reserved young woman, Gabrielle Vargas had difficult time coming to terms with her status as a Transhuman upon waking up one morning to discover that she was suddenly a Octo-Taur; from the waist down she was almost identical to a cephalopod. Needless to say, her family was just as shocked, and slightly horrified at the uncertainness her powers presented to her future. Eventually they sought out professional help for their daughter, as Gabrielle became a depressed shut-in over her transformation.

That introduction to Grant McAllister had a drastic effect on her life as the psychologist used his knowledge to manipulate the young woman in such a way that she felt that his cause was not only noble, but that she should dedicate her life to furthering it. Thanks to her increased intelligence, Gabrielle was able to contribute a number of things to the cause of the Children of Quetzalcoatl; she not only designed and built their flying island base, Cibola, she also developed the Cambion Serum that several of the member now use. It was also thanks to Gabrielle that the group was able to cause the Silver Storm to happen – a mass of nanomachines that infected people to alter their DNA and force the manifestation of their Transhuman abilities. It is something she considers to be one of her greatest contributions to Black Sun’s cause. None the less, any project that Gabrielle is working on is geared towards furthering Encomium’s goals and is the main reason she rarely leaves Cibola.

Background: The young woman known as Zosimos tried to play the part of hero, however she found herself fighting against members of law enforcement and agents of C.A.S.T.L.E. every time she appeared in public due to her aggressive useage of her powers against her opponents.

Eventually the numbers were too much for her to handle and Zosimos was captured, ironically placed in the holding facility where many of the rampaging Stormers from the Silver Storm riot were being held; as C.A.S.T.L.E. agents thought she might have been one of them given the closeness of her first public appearance was to the Silver Storm happening. Before the scientists could begin to run any tests on her several members of Black Sun broke into the building, intent on liberating their “genetic brothers and sisters” and were more than happy to include her amongst that number. Bitter over her treatment by law enforcement Zosimos eagerly committed to Black Sun’s cause.

Background: One of the many people to be caught in the Silver Storm, Keaton Kelley gained the ability to absorb the ambient radiation from his surroundings and project it from his body. As with most of the other Stormers, as those empowered by the Silver Storm are being called now, he was driven almost out of his mind from the pain of his empowerment and proceeded to go on a rampage on Yellow Brick Row until he was stopped by members of the Vanguard.

Unlike some of the Stormers who were able to get away from the scene, Keaton was turned over to C.A.S.T.L.E. in order to understand how the Silver Storm empowered so many people in such drastic and different ways. He was among those liberated by Black Sun who also went with the group when they offered those recently freed membership, and is among those that remained with the group after several of his fellow Stormers left to find their own way in the world.

Unfortunately, Black Sun raided the facility within a few days to free their newly empowered “brethren” to find their destiny in the world; for Connor that meant his accepting their offer of membership to their group. They’ve helped him to develop his control over his powers as he now works to prove himself to his newly gained peers since he’s seen first-hand the injustices done to Transhumans.

Weakness: Voltage’s powers cannot affect non-conductive substances (rubber and stone to name a few) and are thus immune to their effects. Water will also cause him to “short out” if he is charged, causing his powers to fail and leave Voltage disabled or incapacitated depending on the situation.


Background: One of the many people to be caught in Black Sun’s Silver Storm, Bill Taylor gained powers that allow him generate and manipulate electricity. As with most of the other Stormers, as those empowered by the Silver Storm are being called now, he was driven almost out of his mind from the pain of his empowerment and proceeded to go on a rampage until he was stopped by members of the Vanguard.

Unlike some of the Stormers who were able to get away from the scene, Bill was turned over to C.A.S.T.L.E. in order to understand how the Silver Storm empowered so many people in such drastic and different ways. Unfortunately, they made little progress as Black Sun raided the facility a few days later to free their newly empowered “brethren” to allow them to find their destiny in the world. In Bill’s case he only saw the fact he should be allowed to do as he pleased since he had such incredible powers; a view supported by the members of Black Sun, and they welcomed him into their number.

Whatever her reasons, Samantha has always been willing to use her powers to help Black Sun achieve their goals. Though, one has to wonder what could have been so bad in her life that becoming part of a terrorist group was seen as a better option.

Background: Amaya Kinney manifested her Transhuman abilities when the airplane she was a passenger on suffered a mechanical failure during mid-flight, though she didn’t try to save any of the other passengers when she ripped her way free of first her seat then the side of the plane and flew under her own power to safety.

She came up with the cover story of her being sucked out by decompression damage. While her family was thrilled she’d survived the investigators of the crash weren’t so sure, especially the one who was a member of P.U.R.G.E. and they began their own investigation of Amaya. Over the following months, while she secretly worked to develop her control of her powers P.U.R.G.E. agents watched and recorded as much as they could. When they felt the time was right P.U.R.G.E. leaders approved a “purification” of the Kinney family, and a few days later a bomb had secretly been placed in the family’s house with a timer set and ready.

What P.U.R.G.E.’s watchers had missed was the fact that Amaya possessed several powers, which included an impressive resistance to injury. Thus, she not only survived the initial attempt to kill her, but was able to fight off the secondary wave of agents who moved onto the scene to verify the purification was complete. In a few minutes it was all over with, and Amaya’s hands were covered in the blood of her family’s killers and she finally came to her senses. Realizing what had happened to her, Amaya flew away from everything she knew in search of a new start for herself.

Which apparently, she found it as a part of Black Sun, though how and when exactly she connected with the group isn’t known, she has been a member now for a few years and seems to be a respected member. Maybe Amaya has found friends who unquestioningly accept her and can understand the pain she feels over the loss of her family, or perhaps it’s a case of her world view being so dramatically shifted because of what happened to her family that she agrees with Black Sun’s goals.

Shambling Mound: Pitch’s skin constantly oozes a thick, tarry substance that drips off him and leaves a trail wherever he goes. He is also bigger than average, and therefore finds it very hard to hide or get around without being seen.

Thin-Skinned: Pitch is very self-conscious about his looks, and he will happily smash his big, gooey fist into the face of any hero who taunts him. He takes double effect from taunts about his appearance the first time a hero mocks him.


Background: Clyde Sitwell was born in Detroit and raised on the mean streets of the rougher parts of the city. He fell in with gangs early on and never saw a reason to leave. He was good at violence—better than he ever was at driving. However, cars were Clyde’s true passion, and soon the gang life became more of a way to pay for his street racing. He had no real ambitions beyond the midnight runs around the highways and backroads of his home town.

It was in the middle of a robbery gone wrong that Clyde discovered his latent Transhuman abilities; he was trying to outrun police pursuit in his latest souped-up car when he lost control and careened into a highway construction site. As if on a crash-course with irony, it plowed right into a truck that was laying down asphalt, and while the workers managed to scatter just in time to avoid being torched in the ensuing inferno Clyde wasn’t as lucky. He should have died in that car crash, but instead it triggered Clyde’s latent abilities and what walked out of that blaze was a big, sloppy-wet, smoldering giant covered in something like dripping tar. Clyde managed to fight his way free of the police that had been chasing him and went underground to recover from the ordeal.

In the years since Clyde had been seen in the company of various criminals, serving as Transhuman muscle for a variety of get-rich-quick crimes revolving around theft or extortion. Then he somehow met members of Black Sun, and they were able to recruit him to their cause. Every now and then, he manages to put together a car and tries to enter the racing scene under an assumed name, but his hulking mass is pretty unforgettable, and word usually reaches members of law enforcement before he can do more than win a few races.

Background: The past of the man known as Wolfhound isn’t fully known, he’s made comments about being abused by his parents when his powers manifested during his youth until he made a violent escape. Several years later he has said that he was part of a government black ops unit, and his understanding of several parts of the military seems to support his claims.

None the less Wolfhound has been a member of both the Children of Quetzalcoatl and Black Sun, seemingly supporting their goals of Transhuman liberation. Although he does seem to enjoy the missions that involve violence against humans a bit more than his allies do and sometimes they have to restrain him from going too far. This behavior has led to Wolfhound being one of the more infamous members of Black Sun, and he is often used as one of the main examples of why Black Sun is considered to be a terrorist organization.

Motivation ~Enlightenment: Zenturion seeks enlightenment for himself and the Transhumans he meets, and apparently is willing to engage in questionable acts to achieve it.

Background: Claiming to be a Shaolin Monk whose powers manifested during a period of intense meditation, Zenturion approached members of Black Sun asking to join. He claims to have had a vision during his manifestation, that showed him as a part of Black Sun acting as a spiritual guide to the other members and those they liberate. Surprisingly he was granted temporary membership, supposedly so the rest of the group could see how he fit into the group though the truth was more along the lines of Encomium wanting the time to spend investigating the monk’s claims and subtly testing him.

In time Zenturion proved his honest intent and was granted full membership in Black Sun. When he doesn’t take part in field missions Zenturion spends time tending to the large gardens he has built on Cibola as well as meditating in them. Sometimes he is joined by others and they engage in drinking tea and long talks about the things they expect out of life and how best to achieve them. It is one of the most enjoyable parts of his life, though sometimes he wonders why the leaders of Black Sun visit him the least.

Background: The first child of the founder of the Children of Quetzalcoatl, Carmen Balazar has been raised since her earliest days to believe in the goals of her mother’s group; even though most of it is a lie perpetrated by Encomium and his confidants, especially since her birth, and her siblings, was facilitated by the science of DNA manipulation pioneered by Gabrielle.

None the less, as Wrathfire, Carmen is one of the more aggressive members of the organization, and she is often seen at the forefront of any fighting done by the group. She feels that one day she will be the one to take the leadership role of Black Sun when Encomium steps down, even though few of the other members of the group would support her overly aggressive style of leadership. For now though, she is content to use her powers to forward Black Sun’s goals and ambitions even if she questions if they actually do that.
