But no, I’m with you there, Thorpe. I can shoot okay, but I have a terrrrrrrrible sense of direction in these games, and it hampers me dreadfully.

The only thing making me want to do OW builds was the incredible character designs.
Preach on my brotha. I’m ALWAYS going the wrong direction, falling off something, etc. It’s pitiful. :?

Blizzard killed it with the designs and marketing for sure. I’m hooked on the story and I’ll probably never play the game.

Revenge: He wants revenge on the members of Overwatch.

Abilities 74 + Skills 29 (58 ranks) + Advantages 10 + Powers 43 + Defenses 15 = 171 / 171

Build Comments: Reaper is the standard bad ass killer character of the series. With his grim reaper theme and his big ass guns that he doesn’t reload, he just throws down an pulls more out of…somewhere, he’s one of the faces of the game.

His snarkiness and damage dealing capabilities make him a highly played character and he’d make a good adversary for the street level heroes of my world for sure.

Secret Origins: Gabriel Reyes was a senior officer in the US military. Born in Los Angeles, Reyes was enlisted into the US's Soldier Enhancement Program as Soldier: 24, and through it formed a close bond with Jack Morrison. When the Omnic Crisis began and the UN began to assemble Overwatch, the two accepted the offer to join alongside Reinhardt Wilhelm, Torbjörn Lindholm, Ana Amari, and Liao. Though Reyes led the strike team, Morrison was recognized as the team's moral fabric. Around this era, the Reaper also began appearing in numerous armed conflicts, with no apparent allegiance.

The Story so Far: When Overwatch successfully put down the crisis, Morrison was promoted to Strike Commander while Reyes became head of Blackwatch. He oversaw Overwatch's covert ops missions and trained agents like McCree. Over time, Reyes began to resent Morrison for receiving the public's attention while he received none. He began to organize a rebellion within Overwatch that ultimately led to a conflict at the Swiss Headquarters, resulting in an explosion that supposedly killed both Reyes and Morrison. It was during this rebellion that he had enlisted Moira, who aided him in changing his genetic makeup, giving him new abilities. He had also found his way into Talon prior to the fall of Overwatch, eventually taking a role of leadership within the organization.

Reaper attempted to invade Watchpoint: Gibraltar in order to assassinate Winston, and hack into his database to find other agents' locations. Though he brought Talon agents as backup, the operation was not entirely successful, and Reaper only managed to obtain part of the Overwatch database - later taking a few names off its list. Reaper worked with another Talon agent, Widowmaker, to steal Doomfist's gauntlet from a museum. After a fight with Winston and Tracer, this operation also ended in failure; though both escaped intact, the gauntlet was badly damaged and the two lost their upper hand.

Reaper recently came to Egypt, and set a trap for Soldier: 76 in one of Talon's bases there. He successfully took down Soldier: 76, whose identity has been known to Reaper as Jack Morrison, and reveal himself as Gabriel Reyes. When he was about to kill Jack Morrison, he was attacked by "Shrike", the one who had been sabotaging Talon's operations recently. Soldier: 76 was able to fight back, but Reaper escaped and headed for Soldier's sudden supporter instead. He recognized the person as Ana Amari, who beat him to the ground and pulled off his mask. In response to her horrified expression, he blamed his appearance on Jack Morrison and another party for his current state, then got away.

In the mission to assassinate Katya Volskaya, Reaper was aided by Sombra and Widowmaker. After breaking in, he nearly succeeds in shooting Katya through the elevator only to be blocked and attacked by a Russian soldier in a mech. Cut off from his target, he instructs Sombra to go after the CEO herself. When later learning from Sombra that Katya had escaped, he grudgingly tells both of them to retreat, tossing his unloaded guns aside while surrounded by the destruction he had created.

Around the time of Christmas, Reaper could be seen silently watching a happy family of three from the shadows.

Reaper later led a Talon mission to break Akande Ogundimu out of a maximum security Helix prison. Though he was recognized in video surveillance tapes, the mission was successful, and Reaper left over a dozen guards dead and decaying.

Characterization: Reaper admits to being a high-functioning psychopath, having a passion for murder and vengeance and is willing to kill even without a solid motivation. He's seemingly conceited and sadistic, often toying with his opponents when he has the upper hand in combat, as shown when he goes out of his way to step on Winston's glasses before attempting to kill him. Moreover, he gears towards a "mission at all costs" attitude, as evident by his unrestricted activity during his time as the head of Blackwatch and his in-game and cinematic voice lines and interactions.

Reaper also expresses dislike for Omnics. Additionally, he has a tendency to get annoyed, an example of this being his reaction to Sombra closing a hacked door on him after she had opened it for him.

In the past, Gabriel Reyes had been an understandable person with a headstrong nature, treating the members of his original strike team as close friends. However, as time went by, his attitude became more joking and casual, and he seemed to care less for Overwatch. His nature became more cynical when he said, "I'm not the one with the statue." as he proceeded with a half-hearted smile and shrug. This may have hinted at jealousy towards Jack Morrison. Later, he apparently had grown a hatred for both Jack Morrison and the Overwatch organization as a whole, going as far as planning a coup d'état, and later assassinating retired agents.

In spite of how cold-hearted he is, Reaper doesn't seem to mind cracking jokes related to death and The Grim Reaper, showing that even he has the time to display his own sense of humor.

Relationships: He is close to his original Overwatch teammates, particularly Torbjorn. He is close to Torbjorn's daughter, his mechanic Brigette.
Responsibility: To Overwatch and to his duty as the world's shield.

Abilities 48 + Skills 23 (46 ranks) + Advantages 10 + Powers 36 + Defenses 14 = 131 / 131

Build Comments: The iconic tank in the game, the noble Reinhardt. I really like him. As an aging knight (in my own mind) I can empathize with the fight against the undefeated opponent of time. His humbling story in Honor and Glory is a personal fave amongst the animated shorts.

As a build he’s an easy one and an easy play in the system. Tank up, Interpose and protect your allies then go get drinks with Torbjorn. Done.

Secret Origins: Over thirty years ago, Overwatch was founded to counter the threat of the robot uprisings around the world. Reinhardt, a highly decorated German soldier, was inducted as part of the original Overwatch strike team that put an end to the Omnic Crisis. After the conflict's resolution, Overwatch grew into a global institution, keeping the peace in a war-torn world. Reinhardt proved himself to be one of its most stalwart champions.

The Story so Far: Reinhardt's unique ethics and larger-than-life persona earned the admiration of his peers and superiors alike. Never afraid to speak his mind, he was Overwatch's most vocal supporter and, when necessary, its harshest critic, providing a constant reminder that Overwatch was meant to be a force for good.

Having served into his late fifties, Reinhardt was faced with mandatory retirement from combat operations. Despondent about being removed from active duty, Reinhardt feared that his days of purpose and glory had ended. As times grew darker and Overwatch came under suspicion of corruption and sedition, Reinhardt could only watch as the cause he had dedicated his life to defending surrendered in disgrace.

Though Overwatch was eventually disbanded, Reinhardt was not content to sit idly by while the world fell to disorder. Once again donning his Crusader armor, he has vowed to fight for justice across Europe like a knight of old, defending the innocent and winning hearts and minds with the promise of better days to come.

Characterization: Reinhardt Wilhelm styles himself as a champion of a bygone age, who lives by the knightly codes of valor, justice, and courage. Possessing a jolly and outgoing disposition, Reinhardt is a rather imaginative juggernaut, always wanting to bring hope and ambition towards the people. He lives by a code of valor and justice, much like the crusaders of medieval history. Although he is at an old age, he never wants to admit it and vows to fight until his last breath.

Honor: Being Reinhardt's apprentice and Torbjorn's daughter has instilled her with a strong code of honor.
Relationships: With her family, particularly her father, Torbjorn. She is also very close to her godfather and mentor, Reinhardt.
Responsibility: To her mentor, Reinhardt and therefore to Overwatch, although she is not officially affiliated.

Abilities 48 + Skills 24 (48 ranks) + Advantages 20 + Powers 41 + Defenses 12 = 145 / 145

Build Comments: Fulfilling a request from our wonderful site administrator, here is Brigette. Originally she looked to be Reinhardt lite but while still allied with her mentor, her skill set makes her a different type of support character and the way I built her, she would be a great leader of her own team of young heroes.

Secret Origins: The youngest daughter of a weapons designer, Torbjörn Lindholm, Brigitte was the first of his children to show an interest in mechanical engineering. Brigitte spent much of her spare time in her father's workshop, learning the trade and honing her skills. Her aptitude for engineering mirrored that of her father's, but Brigitte's primary interest was in armor fabrication and defensive systems, unlike Torbjörn, who was world-renowned (and perhaps infamous) for the weapons he created.

The Story so Far: Everyone expected that Brigitte would continue her apprenticeship and follow in her father's footsteps. But her plans changed due to an influence of another prominent figure in her life, her father's close friend and fellow Overwatch agent, Reinhardt Wilhelm. A close friend of the family and Brigitte's godfather, Reinhardt told Brigitte tales of heroes and chivalry as she grew up. After his retirement and Overwatch's fall, Reinhardt declared that he would become a knight-errant on a quest to bring justice. Before he left on his adventures, Brigitte surprised him by asking to join him as his squire. Reinhardt accepted.

As a squire, Brigitte had many responsibilities, the most important of which was the upkeep of Reinhardt's Crusader armor (a design she was familiar with as the current version was designed by her father). But more and more, she found her main job was taking care of Reinhardt himself, trying to protect him from his overenthusiasm even as his body was breaking down from years of combat.

Eventually, she realized that serving only as a mechanic wasn't enough and that the best way she could aid Reinhardt was to become a warrior in her own right. While Reinhardt trained her in combat, Brigitte began to build her own suit of armor in secret.

Now Brigitte fights at Reinhardt's side to protect him, and any others in need as knight and squire journey to make the world a better place, one battle at a time.

Characterization: Brigitte Lindholm is a hard worker who is following Reinhardt’s footsteps. She is shown to have some of her father’s traits like building and repairing things. She always has a confident attitude, and always makes sure everything and everyone is ready. Brigitte wants Reinhardt, and everyone to be safe so she decides to be their shield leading her to be caring. Brigitte always tries to improve her armor and her skills, wanting to prove herself.

COMPLICATIONS:
Enemy: Overwatch, Winston in particular.
Motivation: Doomfist believes that humanity thrives only in times of war, for this is where you build and determine strength. He wishes to foment war and chaos, thus empowering people to improve.
Reputation: Doomfist is a feared supervillain terrorist.

Abilities 78 + Skills 26 (52 ranks) + Advantages 26 + Powers 30 + Defenses 15 = 175 / 175

Build Comments: Here is the big bad of the story so far, Doomfist. Doomfist! I love that crappy name. It’s not Taserface crappy but it’s pretty crappy.

Despite that, he’s got a decent backstory and decent powerset. I don’t see him as a top tier character or anything but he’s a bad guy, and bad guys get a bump in my settings to be a better challenge to heroes. PL11 is a gift, but he did hold his own with a whole Overwatch team in his origin story until Winston took him down, so it's not too much of a reach.

Secret Origins: Akande Ogundimu was born into a well-regarded Nigerian family, heir to its prosthetic-technology company. A highly intelligent and charismatic figure, Ogundimu helped to expand his family's business and position it for the future while dedicating his free time to his first love: competitive martial arts. He trained in traditional African fighting styles, including Dambe and Gidigbo, as well as in wrestling and other modern combat systems, incorporating the most effective techniques into his repertoire. Ogundimu competed in tournaments all over the continent, utilizing his intuition and ability to read opponents alongside his tremendous speed and strength.

The Story so Far: But when he lost his right arm in the aftermath of the Omnic Crisis, it seemed his martial arts career was finished before he had reached his prime. His company's cybernetic prosthetics allowed him to recover from his injuries, even making him stronger, but these enhancements rendered him ineligible for competition. He tried to devote himself to his business with the same zeal that he had for fighting, but he found nothing that could fill the void… until he was given a new opportunity by Akinjide Adeyemi, better known to the world as the second Doomfist, the Scourge of Numbani.

Adeyemi offered Ogundimu the chance to fight with him as a mercenary. Initially wary, Ogundimu accepted, and discovered that he now had an arena in which he could unleash his enhanced capabilities. Eventually, Adeyemi brought him into the Talon organization. Talon's belief that humanity would be made stronger through conflict resonated with Ogundimu's personal experiences. Moreover, Talon's power struggles presented a new challenge that allowed him to use his talent in the boardroom along with his cunning as a combatant.

Adeyemi was a useful asset to Talon, but the organization saw far greater potential in Ogundimu, with his intelligence and his ability to inspire as a commander. While Adeyemi was content to profit from raids on Numbani, Ogundimu had a grander vision. This difference in aspiration would lead Ogundimu to kill his teacher and take on the mantle of Doomfist, along with the eponymous gauntlet.

As the new Doomfist, Ogundimu rose high in Talon and helped to orchestrate a conflict that the organization hoped would someday engulf the world. However, before their plan came to fruition, Ogundimu was defeated and captured by an Overwatch strike team that included Tracer, Winston, and Genji. He was imprisoned in a maximum-security facility for years, where he waited patiently for events he had incited to play out.

Finally, he sensed that the time had come for him to return. He broke out of his prison and recovered Doomfist's gauntlet in a one-sided battle with Numbani's newly unveiled OR15 defense robots. Now, he has retaken his place in Talon's inner council, ready to spark a war that will consume the world once again.

Characterization: Doomfist has a fondness for battle as he was known to participate in martial arts tournaments before his injuries and treatment made him disqualified from participating again. He also took Talon's beliefs and philosophy about war and conflict as a way to test the strength of mankind to heart.

Regardless of his love for fighting, Doomfist is not a brute who relies solely on strength. He has a surprisingly calm demeanor, even under pressure - during the battle with the strike team in Numbani, he was able to concentrate on Tracer's movement even while she was gunning him down, eventually being able to rip out her chronal accelerator's hardware mid-Blink. He also fosters an intelligent, almost philisophical mind; he was able to curry favor in not only his family's business empires but also within Talon's inner circles, far exceeding his mentor's influence.

Re: J-Mart: Overwatch - Winston, Reaper, Reinhardt, Brigitte, Doomfist

Post by Ares »

Aw, thanks for the kind words, Thorp, they're very appreciated. And I'm glad you liked the setting suggestions. :D

Reinhardt is definitely my favorite Overwatch character, and I agree that "Honor and Glory" is by far my favorite of the animated shorts. If nothing else, it showcases the power of contrast. Reinhardt is, 99.99% of the time, this jovial, boisterous bruiser, laughing as he charges into battle, though now completely devoted to protecting his friends and the innocent, to live with honor. But the only words we hear from him in the present are said with a quiet, somber respect, and the weight of those words hits harder than his hammer because of it.

Not to turn everything back to Captain Marvel, but that's kind of how I feel it should be with him. 99.99% of the time, he's got this happy smile on his face, even in the most dire of circumstances. He's very much like All Might from My Hero Academia. But he can instantly become intimidating by doing nothing more than simply not smiling. The contrast by itself should be off-putting and kind of scary.

Brigitte is a fun take on the support role, as well as just a fun character overall. And my GOD but there's some very amazing art of her online. *PHEW*

As for Doomfist (and I love the 90s style EXTREME name for him), he sort of justifies the higher PL, given he was taking on Tracer, Genji and Winston at the same time, even if a raged out Winston did take him down.
"My heart is as light as a child's, a feeling I'd nearly forgotten. And by helping those in need, I will be able to keep that feeling alive."

Brigitte is truly the greatest. Unless I'm in the mood for Mei-level thickness. Or Zarya-level beefiness. Or Pharah and her exotic, athletic beauty, orUUGGGHHHHH that game and it's damn choices :).

And I see you went with "Create" for Reinhardt's Force Field thing, like others suggest I did. I never quite felt comfortable using what I associate with the "Green Lantern Power-Set" that way, though it "fits" in some ways. To me, it acted more like a Protection/Deflect thing.

It’s definitely a judgement call on effects like that. Movie Magneto using pieces of metal to block things could be Deflect or Enhanced Dodge. Reinhardt’s and Winston’s Barriers felt more like Create effects to me, but I could see using Protection, Defect or Enhanced Defenses, too.

Abilities 52 + Skills 22 (44 ranks) + Advantages 15 + Powers 49 + Defenses 12 = 150 / 150

Build Comments: Genji is a Cyborg Ninja. Odin bless the geeks at Blizzard that said “go with that, the 13-year-old boy in all men will LOVE it!”

Genji looks like a fun play. As I stated before, if played, I’d have to main a tank or support to even have a chance to be useful. With his mobility and Dragonblade Ultimate it might work for me.

Nah…

Secret Origins: Genji was born into the Shimada Empire as the second child of Sojiro Shimada, who is the master of his clan, three years after his brother Hanzo[2]. As the younger child, Genji inherited the clan's wealth and power without any responsibilities. His body, which was small and diminutive, earned him the nickname of "Sparrow" from his father.[2] Though he was trained in sword fighting, Genji was able to enjoy a frivolous lifestyle.

Most of the clan saw Genji's carelessness as a liability, but his father didn't mind. When their father died, Hanzo's first action as its new head was to convince Genji to take more responsibility in the clan. Genji refused, and a fight broke out between the two that left Genji injured, scarred, and on the verge of death. He was secretly rescued by Overwatch agents and nursed back to health by Dr. Angela Ziegler, a.k.a. Mercy.

The Story so Far: Overwatch's doctors and scientists developed cutting-edge prosthetics for Genji that enhanced his natural speed, agility, and reflexes. As a member of Blackwatch division of Overwatch, Genji began to dismantle the Shimada Empire.[1] As time went on, however, Genji felt repulsed by his mechanical half and left Overwatch when the job was done.

Genji had wandered around the world for many years, and spent an amount of time with the Bedouins, trying to come to peace with his cyborg body.[4] After drifting for many years, Genji met Zenyatta, a member of the Shambali that helped Genji to come to terms with his new existence. Genji moved into their monastery in Nepal with Zenyatta as his mentor.

At the time of the Overwatch recall, Genji had returned to Japan. Genji came to Hanamura on the day of his supposed "death" to confront Hanzo, who did not recognize him. The two fought, and Genji came out on top with the opportunity to kill Hanzo. He did not, instead revealing his identity, forgiving Hanzo, and giving him some words to ponder before vanishing, that the world was once again changing and it's time to choose a side.[

Characterization: In the past, Genji was a playboy that had been more content with enjoying life than running his family's criminal empire. After his near-death experience, Genji dedicated himself to demolishing his former consortium. However, he began to have an existential crisis and self-loathing regarding his cybernetic state after his mission. It was not until he encountered Zenyatta that he made peace with himself.

Genji is a faithful and tolerant idealist, forgiving Hanzo for leaving him on the verge of death and still having hope that he can change himself for the better. At times he shows wisdom, picking up some of the things that Zenyatta has taught him.

Despite his hardships, Genji maintains a sense of humor, jokingly calling himself "Green Cyborg Ninja Dude". He also seemed to enjoy arcade games and ramen before he became a cyborg, as shown by his dialogue at Hanamura.

COMPLICATIONS:
Enemy: Hanzo destroyed his former clan and the remnants will never forgive him and are constantly trying to take him out.
Motivation: Restoring his honor.
Relationships: With his brother Genji, who he nearly killed.
Weakness: Hanzo seems to have a serious sweet tooth that may cause him to let his guard down at inopportune times.

Abilities 68 + Skills 30 (60 ranks) + Advantages 15 + Powers 22 + Defenses 15 = 150 / 150

Build Comments: Poor Hanzo. The whipping boy of Overwatch fandom. I guess players that frequently select Hanzo as their character, "Hanzo mains" as they are known, apparently receive a lot of tox…nope, not using that buzzword…assholic hate from other players. I guess they think the "Hanzo mains" are not sufficiently skilled with the character to contribute to the team's effort.

The Hanzo Mains sound like my people!

I have and will always have a soft spot for archer characters, so I had to give some love to Hanzo. I even tacked on a couple of extra trick arrows for flavor.

Secret Origins: Hanzo was born into the Shimada Empire as the first child of Sojiro Shimada, who is the master of his clan, three years before his brother Genji. As the eldest child, he would be the heir to the empire after his father. His family trained him in martial arts, archery, sword fighting, all of which he became extremely skilled at.

Though Hanzo took his position seriously, Genji did not. After their father died, and under instruction from the clan's elders, Hanzo's first action was to convince Genji to take more responsibility in the clan. Genji refused, leading to a violent fight and Hanzo was forced to kill his brother. Upon Genji's assumed death, Hanzo left the clan out of sorrow. He vowed never to use a sword again and turned to archery for combat. The Shimada clan was later dismantled by Overwatch.

The Story so Far: Hanzo wandered the world after leaving, though every year he would return to Hanamura on the anniversary of his brother's "death" to put incense offerings for him. Many assassins were sent after him during this time. Hanzo returned to Hanamura again on that special day, only to find what he believes to be an assassin stalking him. At first, he did not realize who it was, but after a long fight, the assassin revealed himself to be Genji. Genji forgave Hanzo for almost murdering him, and left him again after leaving him some words to ponder.[2]

Around Christmas time, Hanzo was seen browsing a traditional Christmas cake.

Characterization: Hanzo constantly aims to prove himself, be it for responsibility or redemption. He heavily preoccupies a code of honor, yet displays arrogance at times. Despite their sibling rivalry, Hanzo really cares about Genji, as proven by the fact that he rejected his own clan when the clan's duty forced him to kill his brother. Nonetheless, he sometimes misses his home and laments about what could've happened if he'd fulfilled his destiny as the master of the Shimada clan.

Although his regards to his family and duty have caused him a lot of trauma, Hanzo has his moments where he shows his own sense of humor. He enjoys a good bowl of ramen once in a while and, oddly enough, may have an interest in riches, as conveyed by when he asks Junkrat about where he hides his treasure.

The problem with Hanzo is that he has the worst learning curve of the entire game. He's a sniper with a crapton of complications: no scope, bullets with travel time and parabolic trajectory. As a result he's far less intuitive than Widowmaker or Ana and mastering him require much more dedication than any other character.

And I see you went with "Create" for Reinhardt's Force Field thing, like others suggest I did. I never quite felt comfortable using what I associate with the "Green Lantern Power-Set" that way, though it "fits" in some ways. To me, it acted more like a Protection/Deflect thing.
Always great to see fellow users with good taste in waifus.

On another note, regarding the forcefield, I never liked enhanced defense or deflect for it, it doesn't seem to add much for me. Deflect would need to be reduced range making it mostly pointless in place of just taking a defend action. Enhancing defenses means that either you become less tough (counter intuitive for a shield) or you have to normally be under caps. Deflect also is a terrible option for tough shielders since it doesn't offer much as deflect is PL Capped. Create is probably the effect most able to mimic an actual shield or forcefield and it boosts toughness without breaking PL (since the user has to actually break through it first to even land a hit), it offers cover to hide behind (a boost to defenses).

I suppose an alternate method to make a forcefield/shield would be Impervious on Toughness paired with Improved defense, Evasion, and a few ranks of Increased Mass (in this case interpreted as area) to also be able to effectively defend others.

I agree about the Deflect (which to me has always been a useless power unless you're adding the Reflection/Redirection Extras). Here's what I ended up doing with Reinhardt:

"Barrier Field" Force Field 5 (Extras: Affects Others 6, Selective 6, Area- 30ft. Burst 6) (Flaws: Limited to Blasts, Limited to When Not Attacking, Limited to Frontal Attacks) Linked to Enhanced Advantages 2: Last Stand, Withstand Damage (Extras: Affects Others, Selective, Area- 30ft. Burst) (13) -- (14)

This has the flaw of making him very PL-undercapped without the Field up. My Reinhardt was only +6 to Dodge.
