Build Comments: Hmmm…what is there to say about 8-Ball that really just can’t be gleaned from his gimmick. We’ll just leave it at that and enjoy his epic suckiness.

Secret Origins: The man who would later become 8-Ball was born in Duluth, Minnesota. A former defense contractor who designed missile propulsion systems, Jeff Hagees took to playing pool to relieve the stress of his job. He soon amassed large gambling debts, which aroused the suspicion of his employers, who thought he was selling company secrets to raise money to pay off his debts. Although they had no proof, Hagees' employers fired him.

The Story so Far: Combining his love of pool with his engineering talents, he fashioned a criminal identity for himself as 8-Ball, inventing his cue stick weapons, and engaging in a highly successful crime spree in New York with his gang. In one of his costumed robberies, he faced the alien Sleepwalker, who demands to know what he was doing. Sleepwalker had the battle won and nearly captured 8-Ball for the police, until Rick Sheridan, the human to whom Sleepwalker is bonded, woke up. The alien is forced back into Rick's mind. 8-Ball escaped.

When 8-Ball and Sleepwalker next met, 8-Ball proved victorious; he distracted the hero by shooting innocent bystanders. He attempted to kill Sleepwalker, although the alien hero manages to escape. Later, when Rick and Sleepwalker had switched bodies, 8-Ball and the Hobgoblin each attack Rick, trying to kill what they thought was Sleepwalker to win a $100,000 bet. The inexperienced Rick is no match for them, which made 8-Ball realize that Rick was not the actual Sleepwalker. 8-Ball defeats Hobgoblin to make him stop, although by that time Rick was already dying. 8-Ball later abandoned Rick to his fate, marking his last appearance in the Sleepwalker series.

At some point, 8-Ball is finally captured and imprisoned. He teams up with a number of other villains against the She-Hulk, although they are defeated. 8-Ball later joined up with Freezer Burn, Humbug, and Whirlwind. They stole from the crime lord Ricadonna by breaking into her home later at night while she is at a party. They leave with what is unwittingly a dangerous computer virus; they are caught by a hidden camera.

Freezer Burn is slain by Razor Fist as part of Ricadonna's revenge plan. 8-Ball is tracked down at his grandmother's house by the bounty hunters Misty Knight and Colleen Wing. Before he can give them any information, 8-Ball is killed by the Wrecker who uses a grenade on the car he was in. Ricadonna is later imprisoned.

A second 8-Ball appeared but his whereabouts are unknown after getting taken down by Spider-Man and Daredevil at the Bar with No Name. Roderick Kingsley later gave an unnamed criminal 8-Ball's gear where he became Roderick's version of 8-Ball.

Characterization: Hagees was a gifted inventor who just went down the wrong path and it cost him. Nothing is known about the new 8-Ball.

Friends and Foes: He had a great rivalry with Sleepwalker and the current 8-Ball works for Hobgoblin Kingsley.

Abilities 42 + Skills 20 (40 ranks) + Advantages 8 + Powers 16 + Defenses 15 = 101 / 101

Build Comments: Now the Death-Throws are some jobbers you can get behind. They suck soooooooooooooooooooo bad, you just have to love them. A team of juggling supervillains. Is there a mime supervillain team that I missed out on?

They suck so bad, I can’t even bring myself to build them all. Well, at least for now. At the moment, I’m only doing Oddball and maybe Bombshell in a bit.

Maaaaaaaaaaaybe Tenpin just in case he needs to bail his bro out.

Ok, fine, I’ll build Knicknack and Ringleader. They're so sucky, how can I leave them out? They’ll all make it here eventually.

To start, though, here’s Oddball, who was pretty much the breakout star of the team, showing up in a number of books after their initial attempts to take down Hawkeye. I built him at PL8, but I love amping up jobbers every now and then and I was really, really toying with whipping up a Bullseye-like PL10 version just to F with people. I still might, but I’ll keep him at PL8 for now. Should make for a decent fight for Daredevil, Nightwing types. He’s good enough to have a shot at winning, but not good enough to where he won’t need some luck (or some GM love, which is highly probably when I run him) to pull it off.

Secret Origins: Elton Healey and his brother Alvin were born in Reno, Nevada. Being young, both Elton and Alvin stood out when juggling. They called the attention of a Charles Last, who wanted to recruit them for a new gang of costumed criminals: The Death-Throws. Under the leadership of Last, they would be at the same time costumed mercenaries and jugglers.

The Story so Far: They would take advantage of their juggling skills and use throwing weapons. Last became the Ringleader. Elton adopted the name of Oddball due to his loony nature, and his tenpin-throwing brother would be known as the Tenpin. The fourth member of the team was Knickknack.

Although the Death-Throws valued teamwork more than other villain groups, Oddball suddenly broke up with the Death-Throws for unknown reasons. He began working solo, or at least without his usual partners.

As a costumed mercenary, Oddball was hired by cyborg criminal Crossfire, who wanted to kidnap Hawkeye to use him in a test of his hypnotic ultrasounds. Crossfire also hired two other costumed mercenaries, the Silencer and Bombshell, for this job.

Oddball and Bombshell approached Hawkeye and his partner Mockingbird, and attacked them by surprise. Oddball harassed Hawkeye with his burning-ball juggling while Bombshell was taking care of Mockingbird. Although the heroes were more skilled, the villains managed to knock both of them down, and took them to Crossfire's headquarters at Cross Technologies.

Oddball was impressed by Bombshell's skill for the craft, and talked her into joining the Death-Throws. Hawkeye and Mockingbird escaped from Crossfire's trap, destroyed his ultrasound machine and captured Crossfire. Oddball and Bombshell would have been arrested too, but they were rescued by Tenpin, who was looking for his missing brother.

Crossfire contacted the Death-Throws from jail. He wanted the jugglers to release him, and agreed to pay them when he was freed. The Ringleader accepted the deal, and Oddball and the other Death-Throws worked together to free Crossfire. However, once they had taken Crossfire to their own HQ, they discovered that Crossfire was broke. His assets had been impounded and he had lost any useful link with Cross Technologies. The Death-Throws decided to use Crossfire as bait to attract Hawkeye and Captain America to a trap, but the two Avengers defeated all of the Death-Throws with relative ease. Oddball and his partners went to jail.

Some time later, Oddball improved his own gear and decided to test it in the bloody annual competition of Madripoor, the Bloodsport, which was at the time organized by Viper. In the first round, he was confronted in a one-on-one match with sword-wielding Headhunter. Oddball was confident of his new gear and wanted to use the Bloodsport as a means to obtain some prestige. However, the Headhunter stabbed him with a shriek, seemingly killing Oddball in front of a lot of witnesses.

But Oddball survived and after recovering has returned to his life of crime with renewed purpose.

Characterization: Healey is a bit looney, but a surprisingly effective foe with this throwing skill and knack for creating trick balls.

Friends and Foes: He remains close to his brother, Tenpin, and although he doesn’t work with them often anymore, he stays in contact with Bombshell, Ringleader and Knickknack.

So, after several cock-themed builds, you decided to move on to to the ball-handlers. I'm sure it was hard on you to make that call.

Responsibility: The burden of wielding the Helm of Fate and being one of the primary mystical protectors of Earth weighs heavy on him at times.
Restricted Power: The Helm decides who is and isn’t worthy to wear it. Those deemed unworthy suffer either a lethal Continuous Mental Blast 20 or Continuous Affliction 20 (Resisted by Will; Dazed, Stunned, Transformed) that leaves the unfortunate target in a permanent vegetative state.
Secret Identity: He maintains his secret identity of Kent Nelson.

Abilities 48 + Skills 21 (42 ranks) + Advantages 12 + Powers 171 + Defenses 19 = 271 / 271

Build Comments: Despite his iffy modern history in comics, Doctor Fate has been very well portrayed in the animated DCU. He had some great appearances in JLU and the saga of the Helm of Fate in Young Justice was one of the better running storylines.

And I look forward to seeing him again in Young Justice Season 3, I hope.

Secret Origins: Kent Nelson was the son of archaeologist Sven Nelson and around the year 1940, the two of them were exploring the Valley of Ur in Mesopotamia when they discovered an underground pyramid. It contained Nabu, an ancient immortal from the planet Cilia who had been held in suspended animation for thousands of years.

Kent released him, but the lever accidentally unleashed a poisonous gas that killed his father. It would later be revealed that Nabu engineered this situation to gain a new host. Nabu decided to mentor the young boy in the secrets of the universe, giving him incredible powers and taking his grief away from him. He would serve as an agent of the Lords of Order in their never-ending battle against the Lords of Chaos. Having finished his training, Nabu gave him an amulet, cloak and helmet to become a champion of good as Doctor Fate. He would go on to meet a beautiful college student named Inza Cramer while traveling through Alexandria, and she would become his long-time romantic partner and confidante.

The Story so Far: His first battle was against the evil sorcerer Wotan, who struck at him through Inza using an agent named Thomas Frawley. Kent would continue to go on adventures as Fate, although Nabu's spirit would always guide him through the helmet and he'd awaken with little memory of his own exploits. He joined the Justice Society of America and had many adventures with the team.

As time went on, Kent found the helmet becoming more and more possessive of him, so rather than abandoning his battle against chaos, Kent created the half helm. Although Kent's powers were severely limited, he still had the ability of flight, invulnerability and super strength. However, Kent donned the full Helm one last time in order to defeat the powerful wizard Malador the Mystic.

Afterwards, he retired his Fate persona and became a physician. It was not until about 10 years ago that Kent would rejoin the superheroic community and has been a key member of the mystic community ever since.

Characterization: Kent and his wife Inza are committed the battle against evil and chaos. They often seem as people out of time. As their Justice Society comrades age, Kent and Inza seem immortal. The magic Fate holds over them, virtually stopped their aging process.

Friends and Foes: Kent has had many battles with the forces of evil over the decades. His greatest foe is the wizard Wotan, but he has also developed great rivalries with Malador the Mystic and Arcanix as well. He has been long time friends with the Sorceror Supreme of Earth, Doctor Strange and the two of them have joined forces to battle great magical evil on several occasions.

Abilities 64 + Skills 38 (76 ranks) + Advantages 23 + Powers 167 + Defenses 15 = 307 / 307

Build Comments: I really liked the Doctor Strange movie. It’s not one of my favorite Marvel movies, but it was a really entertaining and man, the visuals were fantastic. Surprisingly, I’m not 100% sold on Benedict Cumberbatch as the Doctor but I think he’ll find himself in that role in his next appearance(s).

Secret Origins: At a young age, Stephen Strange had dreams of becoming a doctor. The eldest child of three, Strange was born while his parents Eugene and Beverly Strange were on vacation in Philadelphia. At the age of eleven he aided his younger sister Donna when she was injured, which proved to be a formative experience for him, and he was inspired to attend medical school after high school. Ironically, it was his inability to later save her from drowning when he was nineteen and on leave from college that undermined his belief in life’s meaning and the value of idealism. Nevertheless, he rapidly finished med school at a young age and became a successful neurosurgeon.

Strange displayed phenomenal talent in his chosen field, and quickly attained wealth and notoriety. The more successful he became, the more arrogant he grew. Eventually this led to estrangement from his family and the undoing of his relationship with a United Nations translator named Madeline Revell to whom he had proposed marriage. So distant and self-absorbed did he become that he refused to visit his father on his deathbed. His enraged younger brother Victor Strange berated him for this, and then was killed as he ran into traffic. Stephen then placed the body of his brother into cryogenic storage.

A car accident that damaged the nerves in his hands changed everything for Stephen Strange. He was no longer able to be a surgeon, yet he refused to become an assistant or consultant, instead squandering his money travelling the world and searching for a cure. One day he heard a rumor of a mystical personage known as the Ancient One in Tibet. Marshaling the last of his inner and outer resources, Strange diligently searched until the fortress of the Ancient One was revealed to him. Though initially outraged that the aged mystic refused to cure his hands, Strange’s anger was quickly replaced by amazement when the reality of magical forces was demonstrated before his eyes as he witnessed an attack on the Ancient One.

Circumstances revealed to Strange that it was none other than Baron Mordo, the Ancient One’s chief disciple, who was the perpetrator of the attack, and who continued to plot the destruction of the antediluvian mystic in an attempt to gain power. To his horror, Strange learned he was unable to reveal this after Mordo easily ensorcelled him. Realizing the Ancient One was a force for good; Stephen selflessly abandoned his quest to restore his hands and committed himself to magical tutelage with the intention of foiling Mordo’s insidious scheme. By this act Strange proved himself to the Ancient One, to whom the entire melodrama had been transparent. Thus Doctor Strange put himself on the path to become the new Sorcerer Supreme of the Earth dimension, yet gained a deadly enemy in Baron Mordo.

The Story so Far: After many years of training, Strange returned to New York. He became a mystical consultant and started having interactions with the superhero community. After the Fantastic Four formed and many superheroes began to surface, Doctor Strange found a friend in Spider-Man. Spider-Man helped him rescue a group of people from another dimension and suggested that Strange remove from their memory this traumatic experience, though this meant that they would forget his own heroism. Initially tricked into conflict with each other by Loki, Thor and Doctor Strange also formed an early alliance to combat the god of mischief.

Noteworthy among the good Doctor’s numerous foes over the years as Earth’s magical guardian were the Dread Dormammu, Shuma-Gorath, the Undying Ones, and Nightmare. Strange’s first battle with Dormammu ensued when the powerful demigod of the Dark Dimension attempted to invade earth’s plane as he perceived the wane of the Ancient One’s might. Strange was forced to duel Dormammu in the Dark Dimension, and though vastly out-powered by the god-like entity, Strange was able to tax Dormammu to the extent that the barrier separating beings known as the Mindless Ones from the rest of the Dark Dimension became compromised. A force of pure destruction, the Mindless Ones would have meant annihilation to the other denizens of Dormmamu’s realm, and Strange nobly contributed his power to his enemy to prevent their being unleashed.

Bound by whatever strange honor as applies to his daemonic ilk, Dormammu then called off his invasion and released Strange. They were to clash many times subsequently, however, and Dormammu has been one of Strange’s most implacable and powerful foes. It was during this adventure that Doctor Strange also met Clea, a beautiful but inexperienced mystic and the daughter of Umar, Dormmamu’s sister, who became Strange’s first apprentice, as well as his lover.

In one of his more bizarre adventures, Strange fought the demonic forces of Shuma-Gorath, an ancient Lovecraftian entity that coveted earth’s domination from the world’s distant past and this time threatened our reality using the very mind of Doctor Strange’s beloved mentor, the Ancient One. Though it agonized him, Strange was left with no choice but to obey his teacher and slay him to prevent the holocaust Shuma-Gorath would have unleashed upon the world. The Ancient One then ascended to become one with the being known as Eternity, while Strange inherited the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme.

Dr. Strange has remained a mainstay of the superhero community, forming The Defenders, which he leads a new incarnation of currently, and also spending time with The Avengers and Stormwatch.

Characterization: Doctor Strange is one of the most respected members of the superheroic and mystical community. His arrogance still rears its head from time to time and he still has some self-destructive tendencies but overall, he remains the top mystical mind in the Thorpacoverse.

Friends and Foes: Doctor Strange has many allies in the superhero community due to his time in the Defenders, the Avengers and his supernatural consultantion for dozens of heroes. He also has a complicated, but currently solid relationship with the White Council of Wizards who allow him to work outside of the Seven Laws due to his status as Sorceror Supreme. He is also good friends with Kent Nelson, Doctor Fate, as the two have joined forces many times to protect the Earth from powerful supernatural threats.

His greatest foe is Dormammu, and he has also had a long rivalry with Baron Mordo. Because of his work, he has encountered and incurred enemies all over the Earth and beyond.

Abilities 90 + Skills 37 (74 ranks) + Advantages 72 + Powers 11 + Defenses 15 = 225 / 225

Build Comments: My Earth-217 take on Michael Holt incorporates his iconic version with his New 52 version which had loads of potential, but didn’t pan out. I bought the first arc and it was OK, but it could have been SO much better.

On Earth-217, he's still one of the smartest men in the world (probably not #3 with Reed, Doom and Lex ahead of him), one of the most successful and one of the most eligible bachelors. He's one of the leaders of the Initiative, the revamped superhero training program, and he helps out with the Justice League when needed.

Secret Origins: At a young age, Michael Holt showed remarkable intelligence, reading and assimilating the works of Bohr, Einstein, Planck and Feynman, the pantheon of theoretic physics, at the age of six. He studied advanced science, space and time "while other children struggled through Sesame Street."

Holt displayed as he called it, "a natural aptitude for having natural aptitudes," easily picking up and retaining complex skills and abilities that other men spent their entire lives perfecting. Before he began his career as a superhero, he already possessed 14 Ph.D.’s (two in Engineering and Physics -- including assorted doctorates and masters in degrees in Law, Psychology, Chemistry, Political Science and Mathematics). He was a self-made multi-millionaire with a high tech firm called Cyberwear (later Holt Holdings Inc.) and was a Gold-medal winning Olympic decathlete.

While contemplating suicide after the death of his mentally retarded older brother and the accidental death of his wife and unborn child, Holt was met by the Spirit of God's Vengeance, known as the Spectre (ironically, Holt is an atheist), who told him about Terry Sloane, the Golden Age superhero known as Mister Terrific. Inspired by Sloane's life story he took the name Mister Terrific and later joined the current Justice Society of America, eventually serving as its chairman.

The Story so Far: For a time he acted as spokesperson for Tylerco and consulted that company on industrial espionage and security matters in exchange for that company helping fund a youth center Terrific had started.

During a conflict over leadership of the Justice Society between former chairman Hawkman and then-current chairman Sand, Terrific was elected as the JSA's new chairman by his teammates, despite not actively seeking the office. He served in this capacity until the team disbanded following the Infinite Crisis.

Mr. Terrific was part of the team assembled by Batman for an attack on the Brother Eye satellite responsible for controlling the OMACs. He played a critical role as his invisibility to technology allowed him to reach the satellite's propulsion system, sending it crashing to Earth. On this meeting he met and befriended another African American superhero - Black Lightning.

After the Civil War event Holt became a leader in the JSA Initiative. Mr. Terrific has also established an ill-defined mentorship with the latest Firestorm, Jason Rusch.

Characterization: Michael Holt is one of the smartest people in the world, a brilliant inventor and the second super-hero to call himself Mister Terrific. He is the successor to Terry Sloane.

Holt is described as having "a natural aptitude for having natural aptitudes;" picking up complicated skills quickly and retaining them, such as performing emergency surgery on teammate Alan Scott after reading about the procedure in a medical text book. As Holt himself put it, "everyone has a talent...Mine is learning."

Holt is an atheist. Though well aware of and having witnessed much of the mystical nature of the universe firsthand, he cites scientific and rational explanations for all of it. He described souls as "a unique energy that could quantify as a telepathic discharge upon death.

Friends and Foes: Holt has a friendly rivalry with Batman, considered his opposite number in the Justice League. Also, Michael Holt has encountered Terry Sloane twice through time travel, with Sloane expressing pride in having so worthy a successor. Holt has been noted as the most intelligent member of the JSA in its history, surpassing his predecessor.

He and Power Girl have had an off-and-on romantic relationship and he has also dated Sasha Bordeaux.

Black Panther: Earth-T1

Post by Thorpocalypse »

We've got a BLACK LIGHT SPECIAL hitting the Aisle 2 shelves!

Wakanda will no longer watch from the shadows. We can not. We must not. We will work to be an example of how we, as brothers and sisters on this earth, should treat each other. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another, as if we were one single tribe. - Black Panther

Rivalry: M’Baku and Namor.

Abilities 116 + Skills 47 (94 ranks) + Advantages 36 + Powers 58 + Defenses 15 = 272 / 272

Build Comments: The last version of T’Challa I did was based on his King of the Dead persona. But after Civil War, I decided to take him back to his roots as the King of Wakanda and a just below Cap level overall bad ass. I believe Marvel decided the same thing.

Secret Origins: The Black Panther is the ceremonial title given to the chief of the Panther Tribe of the advanced African nation of Wakanda. In addition to ruling the country, he is also chief of its various tribes. The Panther habit is a symbol of office (head of state) and is used even during diplomatic missions. The Panther is a hereditary title, but one still must earn it.

In the distant past, a meteorite made of the (fictional) vibration-absorbing mineral vibranium crashed in Wakanda, and was unearthed. Reasoning that outsiders would exploit Wakanda for this valuable resource, the ruler at the time, King T'Chaka, like his father and other Panthers before him, concealed his country from the outside world. T'Chaka's first wife, T'Challa's birth mother N'Yami, died while in labor with T'Challa, so T'Challa would be raised by his father and his father's second wife Ramonda, at least until T'Chaka was murdered by the adventurer Ulysses Klaw.

With his people still in danger, a young T'Challa used Klaw's sound weapon on him, gravely injuring him and forcing him to flee. Around the same time, his stepmother Ramonda visited her old home in South Africa. While on this trip she was kidnapped and taken prisoner by Anton Pretorius. T'Challa would not learn of this until years later.

T'Challa was next in line to be the king of Wakanda and Black Panther, but until he was ready to become the leader of the nation, his uncle S'yan, T'Chaka's younger brother, successfully passed the trials to become the Black Panther. While on his Wakandan walkabout rite of passage, T'Challa met and fell in love with apparent orphaned teen Ororo Munroe, who would grow up to become the X-Men member Storm. The two broke off their relationship due to his desire to avenge his father's death and to become the type of man who could suitably lead Wakanda, but they would see each other over the years when they could.

The Story so Far: T'Challa earned the title and attributes of the Black Panther by defeating the various champions of the Wakandan tribes. One of his first acts was to disband and exile the Hatut Zeraze—the Wakandan secret police—and its leader, his adopted brother Hunter the White Wolf. Later, to keep peace, he picked Dora Milaje ("adored ones") from rival tribes to serve as his personal guard and ceremonial wives-in-training. He then studied abroad for a time before returning to his kingship. T'Challa next invited the American superhero team the Fantastic Four to Wakanda, then attacked and neutralized them individually in order to prove himself worthy as his people's defender and to test the team to see if it could be an effective ally against Klaw, who had become a supervillain made of living sound. After the ruler made proper amends to the superhero team, the four befriended and helped T'Challa, and he in turn aided the heroes against the supervillain the Psycho-Man. He and Reed Richards have had a long and mutually beneficial friendship ever since.

T'Challa later joined the Avengers, beginning a long association with that superhero team. He first battled the Man-Ape while with the group, and then met the American singer Monica Lynne, with whom he became romantically involved. He helped the Avengers defeat the second Sons of the Serpent, and then revealed his true identity on American television. He encountered Daredevil, and revealed to him that he had deduced Daredevil's secret identity.

The Panther eventually left his active Avengers membership to return to a Wakanda on the brink of Civil War, bringing Lynne with him. After defeating would-be usurper Erik Killmonger and his minions, he began to search for his mother and eventually found her. T'Challa eventually proposed and became engaged to Monica Lynne, though the couple never married.

Years later, after suffering a brain aneurysm, his mental state almost causes tribal warfare so the Panther handed power to his council and hides in New York City. There he mentored police officer Kasper Cole, who had adopted an abandoned Panther costume, an experience that gives T'Challa the strength to face his illness, reclaim his position, and return to active membership in the Avengers, whom he helped secure special United Nations status.

T'Challa then helped Storm reunite with her surviving family members in Africa and the U.S. He proposed shortly afterwards and the two were married in a large Wakandan ceremony attended by many superheroes. However, he failed to reunite both Captain America and Iron Man because of their opposing views on the Superhuman Registration Act.

One of the couple's first tasks was to embark on a diplomatic tour, in which they visited the Inhumans, Doctor Doom, the President of the United States, and Aquaman, with only that last ending well. After the death of Bill Foster, the Black Panther and Storm sided with Captain America's anti-registration forces. During the end battle between both sides, the Wakandan embassy in Manhattan is heavily damaged, though no Wakandans were hurt. After the confrontation, the Panther and Storm briefly filled in for vacationing Fantastic Four members Reed and Sue Richards before returning to Wakanda.

T'Challa served as one of the pallbearers at the memorial service for Captain America, along with Tony Stark, Ms. Marvel, Jennifer Sparks, Superman and Sam Wilson.

Upon returning to Wakanda alone, leaving Storm in New York to aid the X-Men, Black Panther aided Wakanda in fending off the alien shapeshifters the Skrulls, who had infiltrated as part of their "Secret Invasion" plan to conquer Earth.

Characterization: T’Challa is one of the most respected members of the superhero community and because of his long-time rulership of Wakanda, he is a well-known international figure as well. He can be curt, but is well schooled in the art of diplomacy. He is one of the most intelligent men on the planet, skilled in a multitude of disciplines and is one of the most dangerous combatants on the planet.

Friends and Foes: He remains close to his sister and mother and even though they are estranged at the moment, he continues to harbor feelings for Storm. His most frequent foes are Man-Ape and Erik Killmonger, but he considers Klaw to be his greatest enemy because he caused the death of his father.

Build Comments: This take on Cyclops was more about reigning in my full bore version and refining thing. I could easily trim this to 150 pts for an updated PC version and feel like I have a pretty good representation.

Secret Origins: Scott Summers is the oldest son of Major Christopher Summers, who was a test pilot in the U.S. Air Force and his wife Katherine Ann. His younger brother is Alex, also known as the mutant Havok. When Scott and Alex were boys, they were flying home from a family vacation in their father's vintage private plane, a scout ship from the alien Shi'ar Empire suddenly materialized and set the plane ablaze. Katherine pushed Scott and Alex out the plane door with the only available parachute. The parachute caught fire, so Scott used his mutant optic blasts for the first time to slow their descent. Scott and Alex were unaware that their parents had been teleported from the plane by the Shi'ar a moment before it exploded. They were also unaware that their mother was with child, their brother Gabriel, who would become Vulcan.

Scott suffered a head injury on landing which was believed to have damaged the part of Scott's brain that would have enabled him to control his optic blasts. The two boys were hospitalized and both suffered traumatic amnesia regarding the incident. The geneticist Mr. Sinister took an interest in the boys. He believed that Scott was the Summers brother with the most potential, so he had Alex adopted to both separate them and render Scott emotionally vulnerable.

One night, Scott woke up and destroyed the roof of the hospital with his optic blast. When Scott woke up again, a year had past. Upon recovering, Scott was placed in the State Home for Foundlings, an orphanage in Omaha, Nebraska. There he was subjected to batteries of tests and experiments by the orphanage's owner, Mr. Milbury, an alias for Mr. Sinister. Sinister placed mental blocks on Scott and took-on the role of "Lefty", who was Scott's roommate and would bully him at the orphanage. Sinister intervened any time anyone came close to adopting Scott.

As a teenager Scott began to suffer from severe headaches and he was sent to a specialist, Sinister, who provided him with lenses made of ruby-quartz . Soon after, Scott's mutant power erupted from his eyes as an uncontrollable blast of optic force. The blast demolished a crane, causing it to drop its payload toward a terrified crowd. Scott saved everyone by obliterating the object with another blast, but the bystanders believed that he had tried to kill them and rallied into an angry mob. Scott fled, escaping on a freight train.

Scott was drawn to a mutant criminal known as the Jack O'Diamonds. Jack O'Diamonds sought to use Scott's new found talent in his crimes and physically abused the young boy when he initially refused. However, Scott's display of power had attracted the attention of the mutant telepath Professor Charles Xavier, who teamed up with FBI agent Fred Duncan to find Scott. Scott was rescued from the villain’s clutches and was enlisted by Professor Xavier as the first member of the X-Men, a team of young mutants who trained to use their powers in Professor Xavier's dream for human/mutant equality.

In the School for Gifted Youngsters the X-Men were tutored by Professor X and trained in the use of their powers in the Danger Room. Xavier provided Scott with a visor made of ruby quartz to help him control his powers in the field. As Cyclops, Scott became deputy leader of the X-Men. While he was a skilled tactician, Scott's social skills were lacking. Scott had fallen in love with his teammate Jean Grey, but his reserved demeanor prevented him from expressing his actual feelings for her.

For a long time, Scott refused to admit, even to himself, that he had feelings for Jean, afraid he would be hurt again or that his optic blasts would hurt her - or anyone else he cared about for that matter. Scott also felt he was no match for his wealthy teammate, Warren Worthington III, a.k.a. Angel who was also romantically interested in Jean. What Scott did not know was that Jean actually had a crush on him too, but was too shy to make a move. Eventually they revealed their passion for each other and began to date.

The Story so Far: When most of his original students were captured by the sentient island-being Krakoa, Prof. Xavier sent another team comprised of Dr. Moira MacTaggert's students, one of whom was Cyclops' long-lost brother Gabriel, aka Kid Vulcan, to rescue them. After the team freed Cyclops, they were seemingly killed. Cyclops escaped, but Prof. Xavier wiped the traumatizing knowledge that his new-found brother had seemingly died saving him from Cyclops' memories.

Prof. Xavier assembled another new team of X-Men, including Sunfire, Banshee, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Storm, Wolverine, and Thunderbird. Scott led this new team, this time successfully rescuing the original X-Men from Krakoa.

When Jean and the other original X-Men left the fold following the formation of the new X-Men, Cyclops stayed-on as deputy leader, feeling that he would never be able to lead a normal life because of the uncontrollable nature of his powers, though he continued to date Jean. The new team was made up of individuals and loners, such as Wolverine, who quickly developed feelings for Jean.

They weren’t initially working as tight a unit as the original team despite the hard training that Cyclops put them through. Thunderbird was killed in the new team’s first mission against Count Nefaria and his Ani-Men and it haunted Cyclops. For a time, he left the X-Men but he eventually returned to continue to play a role on the team, either as leader or advisor. During this time, he and Jean were married and were happy for some time until The Phoenix overtook Jean, causing her death. Scott again took a leave from the team but when Jean returned, he came back to the school again.

When it was believed that Charles had been killed, Scott took over as headmaster of the school. He and Jean split up and he fell in love with the reformed White Queen of the Hellfire Club, Emma Frost. She became the co-Headmistress and helped him run the school during it’s most turbulent times, including the return of The Phoenix and Jean’s second death, attacks by Apocalypse and the apparently reformation, then betrayal by the X-Men’s oldest foe, Magneto.

The most difficult time was the apparently end of the mutant race on M-Day. Scott, Beast and several other mutant leaders tried to figure out the reason and restore their race, but to no avail.

However, the unexpected birth of the child who would become Hope Summers rekindled hope that their race was not lost. And the following year, when the Green Lantern Corps confirmed the rebirth of The Phoenix and its destructive trip towards Earth, Scott saw its return as a sign that it would be restart the mutant race. Superman, Captain America and others saw its return as doom for the planet. Cyclops’ refusal to give up Hope Summers to the combined forces of the Justice League and Avengers set off a massive battle, with both mutant hero and villain alike joining with Scott to battle for what they felt was their last shot at their races’ survival.

During a confrontation with The Phoenix force, Tony Stark’s attempt to destroy it instead split the power between Scott, Emma, Colossus, Magik and Namor, creating what was known as the Phoenix Five. Every time one of them fell, though, their power was consolidated into the remaining members. Finally, Scott was the sole wielder of the Phoenix Force and he fought the combined forces of the X-Men, Justice League, Avengers and Stormwatch to a standstill, seemingly killing his mentor, Professor Xavier in the process. Finally, The Scarlet Witch, Hope and the Martian Manhunter were able to strip the Force from him and disperse it, causing the rejuvenation of the mutant race.

Scott was jailed for his crimes, but eventually escaped with the help of Magneto, Magik and Omega Sentinel. With new mutants manifesting at a higher rate than ever, mutant paranoia and persecution was growing at even more alarming rate. Together with Magneto and Magik, Cyclops went about liberating unjustly imprisoned mutants and offering them help with their powers and a place on his team. Acting on an old idea, he made the former headquarters of Weapon X his team's new home. While attempting to liberate Emma Frost, Cyclops and Magneto both began to lose control of their powers. Emma revealed that she had also been going through this and told them that the Phoenix Force had altered the nature of their powers. Cyclops vowed to find a way to fix Magneto, Emma and himself.

So his mission was set and he would begin to re-train, in secret, to somehow regain control of his abilities, as well as train his newest students in an abandoned Weapon X facility in Western Canada that he deemed the "New Xavier's School for the Gifted." As Cyclops began to rescue more and more mutants, the people on the street began to deem him as a "Revolutionary" holding signs and t-shirts stating "Cyclops was right".

Eventually, there was a conflict between The Avengers and Scott’s team, but it was interrupted by the arrival of Thanos. The teams joined forces with the later arriving Justice League to quell the threat. Scott surrendered to Captain America peacefully, expecting to go back to prison. But after some time in SHIELD holding facility, Rogers, Nick Fury and Cecil Stedman advised him that he was being pardoned. Joined shortly thereafter by Superman, Batman and a returned Charles Xavier, Cap explained that in earlier discussion where Scott had accused him of not doing enough for mutants, he realized that Scott was right. That they should have worked together from the beginning to resolve The Phoenix issue and that he felt like he didn’t learn anything from the Civil War. And Stedman said his popularity had grown so much that they figured the only way to settle the tense human/mutant relations was for him to take lead role working with other heroes. So Superman and Batman asked him to become the new leader of the Justice League, which, after talking it over with Xavier, he accepted.

Characterization: Scott was initially a reluctant leader of the X-Men and even though he was strong of will, he lacked confidence at times and he was very muted and stoic in his personality. After all that he has gone through over the years, though, he has changed and become a more forceful and outspoken leader, much to the delight of Xavier and the X-Men as a whole.

He is a tactical genius and refuses to admit defeat, which has sometimes come to his own, and the team’s detriment. Still, his leadership qualities are so well respected that when Superman and Batman decided to step back from lead roles in The Justice League, they handpicked him to lead the newest incarnation of The League, on recommendation from someone he hasn’t seen eye-to-eye with as of late, Captain America.

Friends and Foes: Cyclops had purposely shut several of his close friends out of his over the past few years for varying reasons. He was extremely close to the original X-Men but Iceman and Beast have disagreed with his recently methods and he and Angel remain decent terms, but are not close anymore. Jean Grey has recently returned to life as well and the two of them are working to restore their close friendship, as Scott and Emma work to restore their romantic relationship. He and Wolverine have a great respect for each other, but have had more than their share of confrontations, first over their shared love of Jean, and more recently about their role of how to train the new generation of mutants. This led to Wolverine starting up his own school, The Jean Grey School for the Gifted, which, after their minor reconciliation, houses all the students from Scott’s New Xavier’s school.

He and Charles Xavier had a father-son relationship for years, but it became strained for while due to Xavier’s initial deceptions and later on his perceived undermining of Scott’s leadership of the X-Men. As of late, though, they have begun to reconcile. While Scott continues to work with the X-Men from time to time, his moving on to the Justice League and leaving the school back in the hands of Xavier and Wolverine have certainly helped.

He has had a number of relationships, most notably with his teenage love Jean Grey and most recently with Emma Frost. He and Emma are currently not dating, but they still have feelings for each other and everyone expects a reconciliation in short order.

Scott has acquired many enemies in his time with the X-Men, but his most personal enemy is Mister Sinister, due to the torture he inflicted on Scott in his earlier life. Sinister sees Scott as his greatest project and continues to plague him, even after many supposed deaths.

Just to show how out of touch with popular culture I am, before the Dr Strange movie, I thought Benedict Cumberbatch was a character in Harry Potter.

I know I'm in a minority, but Cyclops was always my favorite X-Man. And I HATE what Marvel has done to the guy.

Cyclops, specifically, never caught my interest, but I know what you mean. I usually prefer the type of hero that classic Cyclops was. Direct and straight-laced and just... the Good Guy. Prefering Scott to Logan is like prefering Leo to the angry, edgy Raph... which I do. A lot of people find the Hero Guy character type boring, but... I like it. I grew up listening to Hulk Hogan telling me to say my prayers and take my vitamins, and darn it, I obeyed with pride.

Scott's not my favorite, and don't ask me who is, I don't know that I have a real answer, but he's way up there. And I totally agree with how they've treated him over the past few years for the most part. They did make him more of the bad ass that I've always thought he was, but they went too far. I don't know what it served to have him kill Professor X and I don't know what it served to off him the way they did.

I think he has totally been underserved as an overall leader in the superhero community. The Thorpocaverse is rectifying that. I've always felt that they've kept the X-Men too isolated within the superhero community as a whole and that has kept everyone except Wolverine from having the crossover appeal that they could have. Storm, Iceman and Nightcrawler especially should have had significant Avengers team runs like Beast and Logan AT LEAST.
