Abilities 50 + Skills 18 (36 ranks) + Advantages 12 + Powers 95 + Defenses 13 = 188 / 188

Build Comments: The hothead, Johnny Storm. I tried to suffer through Fan-Four-Stick and didn't make it, but I did like Michael B Jordan as Johnny for the most part. Man, I feel so bad about how that movie turned out. It started out OK and then it just...wow.

Please give the FF back to Marvel Studios...PLEASE... :(

Secret Origins: Johnny Storm is the son of physician Franklin Storm and his wife Mary. He and his older sister Susan grew up in Glenville, New York. While still young, his mother was in a terrible car accident and she passed away, despite Franklin’s attempts to repair her body. After this tragic event, Franklin fell into a downward spiral of drinking and gambling, eventually leading to his arrest for the murder of a loan shark, which he claimed was self-defense. Johnny and Sue were then sent to their Aunt’s to live and Sue spend much time caring for her younger brother.

The Story so Far: See Mister Fantastic.

Characterization: Forever young and rebellious, Johnny was always ecstatic to have his powers. Labeled the hot head of the group, Johnny often makes brash decisions and disobeys direct orders. He would quit the team early on (and many more times) because of his temper. Storm was trained in hand-to-hand combat by the Thing, and is highly skilled in the use of his superhuman powers in combat. He is also a skilled race-car driver, auto mechanic and designer.

Friends and Foes: He is close to the other members of the FF and his niece and nephew, Valeria and Franklin. He and Ben Grimm fight all the time, but are close as brothers and no one messes with the other when the other is around but them.

Johnny has been involved in several romantic relationships throughout the years, including, but not limited to, the Inhuman Crystal, member-in-training and future Galactus herald Frankie Raye, the Skrull agent Lyja disguised as Alicia Masters, and the Atlantean Namorita. He has also had countless relationships with civilian women.

Re: 295 - Vega

So...I kinda miscounted earlier so I had to slide one more build in to get my personal count corrected. Here is Vega from Street Fighter as I drop back into the fighting builds one more time before moving back to superhero stuff.

Toughness +6 (+3 without Defensive Roll), Fortitude +6, Will +6

COMPLICATIONS:
Arrogance: Vega loves him some Vega and has ultimate belief in his superiority over others.
Honor: Vega honors beauty over all things and will do his best not to harm or to save the things he finds beautiful.
Mental Instability: The murder of Vega's beautiful mother by his "ugly" stepfather caused him great trauma, juxtaposing his cultured and vain side, with that of a sadistic, bloodthirsty killer.
Obsession: He values beauty overall things and loathes ugliness in all its forms and he is driven to eradicate it.

Abilities 80 + Skills 23 (46 ranks) + Advantages 30 + Powers 4 + Defenses 13 = 150 / 150

Build Comments: I never saw Vega until Street Fighter X Tekken and now I am a fan. He is fast as hell and his blade combos were really hard to block, at least I thought. Reading up on him for the build, I’ve become an even bigger fan since narcissists are great characters to root against.

Secret Origins: Vega was born to a privileged noble family in Spain. For reasons undisclosed, their status dwindled, causing Vega's mother to remarry for financial security. As he matured, Vega studied bullfighting, a cultural tradition. Afterward, he went to Japan and learned ninjutsu, a style he believed meshed well with his natural grace and agility. Combining bullfighting with ninjutsu, Vega went into an underground cage fighting circuit, and quickly became one of the best.

His ugly stepfather murdered his beautiful mother because he felt she did not respect him, and Vega killed him in return. The incident warped his mind, and he developed a dual personality: honorable nobleman by day, sadistic murderer by night. It also triggered Vega's obsession with beauty as a wonderful trait, as well as his belief that ugliness is something evil that should be purged.

The Story so Far: Vega oversaw assassination operations for Shadaloo, and was associated with Cammy and the Shadaloo assassins known as the Dolls. When Cammy went rogue however, Vega was assigned to bring her in and although he failed in that mission, Cammy brought herself in and defeated M. Bison, freeing herself and the other Dolls from Bison's brainwashing. When the strain of undoing the brainwashing (as well as a dead-man's trigger in the brainwashing which was meant to kill them if they betrayed Bison) caused Cammy and the other Dolls to collapse, Vega saved them from the burning Shadaloo base because he didn't believe that anything as beautiful as them should die.

Vega then participated in the second World Warrior tournament at the behest of Bison. However, when Bison was seemingly killed by an unknown assailant, Vega disappeared back into his old lifestyle.

It is unknown what Vega was doing since the fall of Shadaloo, although it's assumed he still continued his murderous rampages. He was also rumored to have returned to bullfighting. No one knew for sure, and some even believed that he was dead. He has survived however, and returned, being re-recruited by Shadaloo through a subsidiary division called S.I.N.; an offer he quickly accepted. He does so, however, for two reasons.

First, he had grown tiresome of the aristocratic lifestyle, finding money and power to be an ugly combination. Second, although he found the new head of the organization, Seth, repugnant and ugly as well, he was intrigued at the idea of creating new bodies for oneself so as to be eternally young (despite the mold being broken with Vega himself). He returned to his job as a Shadaloo assassin; however, at S.I.N. HQ, while Seth was distracted by several assailants (not least of whom was a newly resurrected Bison), Vega stole valuable data on the project, and when Chun-Li did the same thing, he attempted to kill her by setting off the fire alarm, which released a toxic, fire-retardant spray. He escaped in a helicopter from the exploding base and noticed Chun-Li being rescued from the base along with her copy of the data. Mildly displeased that he did not have the only copy, he resolved to correct the situation later.

Characterization: Vega's character is summed up very easily. His the epitome of the Narcissist. He’s often depicted as a long-haired, effeminate self-lover. He is vain and convinced of his own abilities, almost to the point of megalomania, though this is perhaps justified, as he is shown to be a highly skilled fighter. He can be incredibly sadistic - sometimes to the point of being a bloodthirsty monster - and takes great pleasure in seeing the ugly murdered through his own doing. He often has a stone-cold demeanor and appears to be mysterious with his emotions.

Vega's unbridled and solipsistic ego is shown even in his taste in interior decor, as his mansion is decorated with portraits, all of him. Despite his vain personality, Vega's mannerisms will at times show to be elegant and gentlemanly, likely because of his noble background. He has also been described as intelligent and sophisticated. Additionally, he is also attracted to and impressed by the beauty and strength of young women, notably Chun-Li and Cammy.

He also harbors a tragic side. The family trauma he experienced molded his fragile mind to perceive physical unattractiveness not only as replusive, but also as a threat. With his mother murdered at the hands of an ugly man, ugliness came to represent evil and cowardice, while beauty represented heroism and strength.

Friends and Foes: Vega’s greatest relationships is with Vega himself and remains loyal to Shadaloo up the point that it interferes with his own interests.

Rivalry: The Yancy Street Gang, Johnny (most of the time), and he always a piece of The Hulk

Abilities 90 + Skills 20 (40 ranks) + Advantages 14 + Powers 37 + Defenses 11 = 172 / 172

Build Comments: Here he is, his Aunt Petunia’s favorite nephew, the idol o’ millions, the pride o' Yancy Street, the ever-lovin’ blue-eyed Thing! Man, I always loved Ben Grimm the best out of all the FF. The way they wrote his wit, his constant struggles with his appearance and his flat-out butt kickin' style made him one of my idols as a kid, and I am still a total Thing fanboy to this day. I'm glad to see him

Secret Origins: Benjamin Jacob Grimm was born on Yancy Street in the heart of New York City into a poor Jewish family. When Ben was a young kid his older brother, Daniel Grimm, was the leader of the Yancy Street Gang, a group of young trouble-makers from the area. When he was old enough Ben joined this gang as well. He was inducted into the gang by being ‘beaten in.’ Growing up poor along with his gang affiliation and related activities made Ben street-smart, tough and 'hard' very early in life. All of these personality characteristics have served him well throughout his lifetime of brawling and adventuring.

During Ben's formative years tragedy struck his family hard; his older brother Daniel was killed in a gang fight when Ben was still a kid and his parents Daniel, Sr. and Elsie both died in an accident when he was a teenager. Ben was placed in the custody of his Uncle Jake (his father's brother) and Aunt Alyce (Jake's first wife) who took him from New York to Arizona. Unfortunately, Alyce died relatively young. After Alyce's death, Jake Grimm re-married. His second wife's name was Sophie, whom he also out-lived. Jake married yet a third time, this time to a much younger woman named Petunia, whom Ben speaks of quite often.

Now physically removed from his past troubles, Ben did well in high school, using his natural talent to his advantage becoming an excellent football player. Ben won an athletic scholarship to Empire State University where he met, roomed and became best friends with Reed Richards. While attending university Ben and Reed also meet Victor Von Doom who was studying there as well.

After college, Ben joined the US Air Force and became a fantastic pilot, often testing experimental aircraft and even flying top secret missions for the US government. His piloting skills eventually landed him a spot at NASA.

Ben was later contacted by his old friend Reed who wanted him to pilot his experimental rocket into space (as they joked about doing when they were in school together). Ben was reluctant to pilot the ship as he was unsure that it would be safe for them. Ben was persuaded to do so anyway and they took off with Susan Storm, who helped fund the project, and her younger brother Johnny on their fateful trip.

The Story so Far: See Mister Fantastic

Characterization, Friends and Foes: The Thing is generally well liked amongst other heroes within the superhero community. Grimm's relationship with his teammates has been a close but occasionally edgy one given his temper. Through the years Ben has had innumerable adventures with not only his teammates but many, many other heroes, super-beings and even aliens throughout the Thorpacoverse. In the course of these adventures and team-ups, Ben encountered and/or teamed up with old sparring partners like the Hulk, Namor the Sub-Mariner, Black Bolt, Power Man, Nick Fury and Silver Surfer while establishing new sparring partners such as Wonder Man, Sasquatch, Lobo, and Hyperion. He also teamed with many of the highest profile heroes including Captain America, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Invincible, Spawn, Jenny Sparks, Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man, Daredevil and Dr. Strange. Ben faced and fought foes ranging from the most obscure all the way to universal threats like Thanos. The time spent with these many and varied members of the superhero community has built bonds of trust and friendship for Ben that have enhanced his reputation as one of the most honest and dependable superheroes anywhere, despite his monstrous appearance. A great many of these friendships have served him well and endure to this very day.

He and Johnny Storm are always arguing and have often clashed, causing no end of mayhem in the Fantastic Four headquarters.

Grimm calls Reed Richards "Stretch", as appropriate to the fact that he is naturally tall and can literally stretch his body. However, Grimm also holds Reed responsible for his condition since he had dismissed the potential danger of the cosmic rays that gave them their powers, although Grimm had taken them very seriously. At times of real frustration towards Reed, Grimm refers to him simply as "Richards".

Grimm is the godfather of Reed and Sue's son Franklin, who affectionately calls him "Uncle Ben". Ben also has a long-standing and continuing feud with some youngsters from his old neighborhood Yancy Street. Calling themselves the Yancy Street Gang, they play practical jokes on Ben because they think that Ben considers himself a 'big-shot' now and that he has forgotten where he's from; where his roots are. The gang figures that being from his old neighborhood and being members of his old gang gives them the right to harass Ben.

I can't be the only person who wants to see the Thing kick the Hulk's ass, can I? Just once.

I see you've made Ben one PL higher than his teammates but built him with the lowest number of points. That might be the best way to make bricks, in Mutants and Masterminds. In the comics, the idea is usually that the brick is the most powerful/sturdy character up close but can't do a lot at a distance, or in less straightforward situations. The power level system in Mutants and Masterminds makes that hard to do, though.

First, thank you for the FF write ups. Second on Ben's lifting of 600k , is that typo ? I love that you made him a great hand to hand fighter. He should always be treated as a threat. Event to the heavy hitters.

Yep, typo. Should be 600 Tons. Ben's buff, but not Superman lifting buff. ;)

Heck, I'll give it a shot. In my current PL re-evaluations, I have Bruce at PL12 and Amadeus at PL11 so it's conceivable that it could occur. That's part of the reason I'm doing some PL flattening across the board. Doing those fighting game builds and some more testing, it's really more fun to have fights with characters closer in PL just to give both parties a chance.

I think the problem with MnM is that with RPG rules instead of comic rules, ranged characters have a distinct advantage against someone like Ben. They can stay away from him and eventually just win due to their ability to keeping hitting him while not getting hit. But by the same token, someone like Daredevil would have to get incredibly creative beat a brick like Luke Cage because of how many hits it would take him to get Luke down, even though they're the same PL. The chances of Luke getting a good lick on DD and taking him out first is more probable.

The Torch as an ex-druggie? Interesting choice. Kind of takes the "Johnny is irresponsible" thing to the limit, and makes his sister's babying of him a bit more understandable.

Nope- you can't be. I've been arguing that for a while, and raged against Ben's lack of respect in my build thread more than once (chiefly, that Ben hasn't had a big "win" in eons, and now Hulk/Ben fights are basically jokes).

My methods are a means to an end, no different than pruning weeds in order to let an orchid flourish. Those who stand in the way of my vision oppose me because they fear me, but more than that they fear what I represent. Change. Do you know why I despise Richards? And T'Challa? Because never one have they reined in their own self-righteous arrogance long enough to try and see what I see. Never once have they asked me: why? Do you want to know? Love. Measure my crimes against what mankind does to itself, and I am a saint. ... I have looked into the future, I have seen how one violent action after another spins the world toward a future where all that remains of Earth is a burned out cinder. Every time I have looked into the future, that is what I have seen. Every time but one. In one possible future mankind becomes united. Cures for all diseases are found. Global conflict ends. Hunger is abolished. Education is universal. And no one goes without. In that world, there are laws. To break even the slightest of these is to suffer immediate and terminal punishment. ... Ten thousand futures have I looked at. A hundred thousand. And in only one does mankind finally unite, and flourish...and survive. Only one. Doomworld. - Doctor Doom

Build Comments: Doctor Doom. Love him. One of the greatest, if not the greatest comic villain of all time. Smart, powerful and at times sympathetic, he’s a character the Marvel U really needs in some form or fashion to keep rolling. He ROCKED in Dark Reign as the one member of Norman’s cabal that he tried everything to keep in line, but could never do. But I didn’t dig Doomwar too much, although admittedly I didn’t read the whole thing. But he was da bomb in Secret Wars where he became Godking Doom and created his own reality. The main story with him wasn't that great, but the side series that spun off during the event were great. A Thor book written like a buddy cop story? Captain America and Devil Dinosaur? Those were great!

And he always brings a jolt of energy to the FF books, even though they've gone at a 1000 times. Which he better be doing soon when they get their book back. You hear me, Marvel?!?!?!?

He generally comes off as PL12 in this build, but with the right invention or ritual, he can hit his PL13 caps easily. And with his many abilities, outside of a straight up brawl with a mega-paragon or powerhouse, he can handle pretty much anyone one-on-one. Great team wrecker villain.

Secret Origins: Victor was the child of Gypsy travelers in Latveria, a small European country. Victor's mother, Cynthia, was killed soon after she called upon the demon Mephisto for power. She left Victor with his father, asking him to protect him from Mephisto. Victor's father, Werner, was a doctor who was called upon by King Vladimir of Latveria to treat his wife. Unable to do so, Werner fled with Victor and died soon afterward trying to protect his son. Victor was left with his father's best friend Boris. Victor later discovered his mother's mystical books and artifacts. With them he was able to teach himself sorcery. He made several unsuccessful attempts to free his mother's soul from Mephisto.

Victor excelled in science, developed several inventions, and was eventually given a scholarship to Empire State University. While attending this school Victor met Reed Richards, who would later become his enemy, Mr. Fantastic. In school, they were considered scholarly rivals. One day, Victor designed an invention to rescue his mother which would become his greatest downfall. Richards attempted to warn Victor of an error in his calculations. However, Von Doom's arrogance refused to let him listen. The machine then exploded, scarring his face, and led to his expulsion from the university.

Von Doom later went to Tibet and found an old order of monks. He practiced their ways enough for him to become their leader. Von Doom then asked them to make his first suit of armor. Eager to wear the suit, Doom placed the still-hot steel faceplate to his face, making him even more scarred than before. As Dr. Doom, he then killed Baron Vladimir and imprisoned his son Rudolfo, and gained control over Latveria. Rudolfo would escape and lead a rebellion and become a thorn in Doom's side for years till his death. Later, Rudolfo's younger brother Zorba would take over where his brother left off. Doom using his intellect and inventions, turned Latveria into a thriving nation.

The Story so Far: There are too many stories to tell with the great Doctor Doom. He has been a frequent foe and reluctant ally to the Fantastic Four and has done battle with Superman, the Justice League, the Avengers, Stormwatch, the Defenders, Lex Luthor, Batman and countless other heroes.

Characterization: He is Doom. His arrogance is only matched by brilliance. He is the world’s greatest villain and a mind only matched by Reed Richards and Lex Luthor. He’s both threatened the world and saved the world all with the intention of being seen as the ruler Earth he believes the world truly needs.

Friends and Foes: His greatest rivalry is Reed Richards. He has reconciled with his son Kristoff for the time being but generally Doom needs no allies.

Dr. Doom is hands down one of my favorite villains of all time. He's basically got everything that made Darth Vader awesome, then jacked up to make him the most dangerous man on Marvel Earth. And there have been some really great Doom stories over the years. As a villain in Marvel, he's really got few equals, with only guys like a well written Magneto really touching him in terms of grandeur and pathos.

It's one reason why it irks me occasionally when writers will do a "Grant Morrison wants to remind people of who Magneto really is" on Doom. To me it always comes off as being "that one guy" poser who sees a lot of people loving something and feels the need to try and tear it down. I'm not saying Doom should never be defeated, and his plans should always be thwarted in the end, but that FF series where Scott Lang basically tears Doom down is essentially an essay from the writer to the fans of why he thinks Doom sucks.

Contrast that with some damn good stories, like where Doom and Dr. Strange free his mother's soul from Mephisto. Or how fun he was as a villain during the first Secret War. Or the Byrne FF run where Doom uses the FF to liberate his homeland.

What makes Doom interesting is that he is one dose of humility away from becoming a hero, and those kinds of villains can make for some interesting stories.

The fact that he has no innate superpowers, but is "just" as brilliant as Reed, as good an armor smith as Tony, a mage Dr. Strange can respect, and owns his own nation like T'Challa combine to make him an amazing threat that works for almost any hero. He really is Marvel's #1 villain, and it's a damn shame we haven't seen him in the MCU yet. Marvel needs to work out some deal with Fox the same way they did with Sony and Spider-Man, because the screen needs a well done Dr. Doom.

There have been people who don't like the nobility Doom's been shown to have, and some people who have actually had jobs with Marvel and thus could actually do something about it used the opportunity to do so, such when Matt Fraction used Scott Lang as a voice to speak directly against the notion of Doom being noble or deep: "I've had the misfortune of meeting people convinced you're not a monster. That you're nuanced. Layered. Deep. ... Your sophistication is the Wagner phonograph playing in the background at the Wannsee conference. Your depth is the hopper capacity of Uday's and Qusay's wood chipper." I never understood what the problem was, seeing how comicdom is big enough for all kinds. You can have your Red Skulls, Carnages, etc., and characters who aren't complete monsters. But there are some people who "want their bad guys bad," and don't like shades of grey.

Hoo, boy. Sticking my nose into this is probably a bad idea, but...

First off, I want to make something perfectly clear: I don't think anyone is a bad person for liking Doctor Doom. I don't think anyone is a bad person for having an interpretation of him that's different from mine. But for what it's worth, I don't think people tear him down because they don't like shades of grey in their comics.

There aren't a lot of mustache-twirling mad scientists in the world, or bank robbers in bright costumes, or serial killers who keep breaking out of prison, but there are a lot of authoritarian dictators out there. And they don't need good press. Allred's Ant-Man doesn't compare Doctor Doom to Saddam Hussein and his sons just to be cute, he does it because they're genuinely the closest thing to Doctor Doom that exists. If he wrote it today, he'd probably compare Doom to Kim Jong-Un instead, or Vladimir Putin, since they're the strongmen currently giving the U.S. headaches and sleepless nights. There will be others after them. There always are.

When comic fans talk about how awesome Doctor Doom is, how tragic and fascinating and noble he is, how smart and wise and powerful he is, when they post funny comics about how the world would be great if Doctor Doom was in charge of it, what it can easily sound like is: Wouldn't we all be better off if someone knew what was best for us and told us exactly what to do? Wouldn't that guy be cool?

I'm never going to criticize a writer for reacting negatively to that.

To me, Doom IS a monster, but some writers overdo the "monster" part and turn him into something a little bit over the line. But I think it's important to note that he'll sacrifice just about anyone to get what he wants, and even his best writers included tons of scenes that showcased his insane arrogance and over-arching pride.

I do find it ironic that Fraction had Lang call Doom a "sociopath" over and over again for pages, only to accidentally reveal that he technically ISN'T, because part of the story is that Doom is tricked into seemingly-killing Valeria, one of the only people he cares about, and freaking out about it. Which is something a sociopath wouldn't really have an issue with doing.

I guess that the entire point is that Doom is a monster, but a fascinating monster at that. In more than one way he's a character from a gothic horror novel: intelligent, charismatic even understandable to a point, but all of this falls apart when you consider how far he is willing to go for his own goals (even excluding some of the most questionable things writers attributed to him over the years, like sacrificing his one true love, Valeria, to gain more mystical power).
"You're right. Sorry. Holy shit," I breathed, "heckhounds.”
