COMPLICATIONS:
Alcohol: Despite their immunity to most poison, alcohol affects youkai normally.
Prejudice: Even weak youkai may inspire not-entirely-undeserved fear in those unaccustomed to dealing with them.
Weakness: As primarily spiritual beings, youkai are susceptible to certain magic (mostly sealing and exorcism) that might not affect humans. In addition, their Immortality cannot revive them if properly exorcised after death.

Honest: Oni never lie. This is a matter of principle rather than an actual disability, but people nonetheless seem to place faith in it. They also dislike liars.
Relationships: Yuugi was formerly part of the Four Devas of the Mountain with Suika Ibuki and Kasen Ibaraki. She also still maintains some authority among the oni of Former Hell.
Reputation: Oni are a real rarity in Gensokyo, and Yuugi is one of the Four Devas, some of the most famed youkai of all. Those who learn this tend to react with fear or awe at first. As former subordinates of the oni, tengu and kappa tend to be particularly deferential to her.
Weakness: Like other oni, Yuugi (allegedly) won’t approach a sardine head or a broken holly branch, and roasted soy beans burn her skin.

Description:
The oni of Gensokyo moved into what is now known as Former Hell in the Underworld when the area was abandoned by Hell due to budget concerns. The area became a haven for all sorts of youkai who didn’t get along with others on the surface. Frustration with modern life is what drove Yuugi and Suika down there as well, drawn in by a land where might makes right and there are plenty of rough-and-tumble drinking buddies to be found.

Yuugi, also known as Hoshiguma-douji, is nonetheless a honorable personality who likes the strong, brave and honest but despises the weak, cowardly and sly. She’s happy to play and drink with anyone who can keep up with her, but has little time for those who can’t. According to Suika, Yuugi is weaker than her in magic but even greater in strength. In fact, the "unexplainable phenomena" Yuugi wields are all merely displays of her incredible strength.

Suika left for the surface a while ago, but Yuugi stayed underground. She is encountered in the 3rd stage of SA, where she and the heroines engage in an extended fight across the city of oni in Former Hell before she finally deigns to hear what they’re actually here for.

Build Comments:
The One True Muscle Wizard.

Even among oni, “Yuugi the Strong” is the epitome of physical strength in the whole series, so I don’t feel too bad going over the top here. Area applied to Strength is a real pain to fight against, but it’s worth noting that Yuugi, just like many other similarly powerful youkai, never goes all out: most of her powers can hardly be used without flattening her surroundings, and she’s too nice to do something like that (unless she really gets excited). I could’ve justified PL 13 for the oni, but decided to just make them heavily damage-shifted; after all, it’s not like most contexts outside M&M really account for accuracy when they call someone “the most powerful”, they just look at brute force. One thing making Yuugi a memetic badass is that despite being a 3rd stage boss (due to not giving a damn), she’s one of the few characters whose portrait and demeanor show no signs of damage even after the fight, showing that she’s just playing around. As in the words of a memetic internet comment, “HER SAKE NOT EVEN DROP”.

In my set-up, she ends up meeting her PL caps better than Suika while also having Accurate Attack and being more “skilled” in general (possibly due to being less drunk). She doesn’t have Suika’s versatility, though, but just Damage and Affliction in massive areas. She can summon intense winds with a wave of her arm, flatten town blocks with a roar and cause a raging firestorm just by flexing… all through sheer muscle strength. Did I mention she’s one of my favorites?

Unfortunately we don’t see Yuugi too much, so I threw in a couple minor additions from the Strength Power Profile. “Subtle 1 on Strength Damage” on her and Suika reflects the classic “finger flick”, which is definitely very much appropriate. Arguably some people like Remilia should get it too, but physical strength isn’t quite as central to her theme as for the oni, so nah. It’s also reported that Yuugi’s footsteps alone can cause houses to collapse, but it’s not quite a combat-useful power, so I just made it a Feature (which she doesn’t use lightly, obviously). She could trivially destroy the houses anyway if she wanted, so it’s just for style points.

Of course, this doesn’t apply to Kasen, because she’s totally not an oni or anything, no siree.
Motivation: Kasen would like to search for her missing right arm in the Outside World, but Gensokyo's barrier is complicating things.
Relationships: Kasen was formerly part of the Four Devas of the Mountain with Suika Ibuki and Yuugi Hoshiguma. She has an awkward relationship with the other sages Yukari Yakumo and Okina Matara. In her hermit guise she’s taken a mentor-like attitude towards Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame, and made various other connections.
Secret: Kasen is trying to hide her oni nature and masquerade as a hermit, likely in an attempt to better mingle with humans. Her old associates already know who she is, and other youkai etc. usually don’t take long to notice, but she still does her best to hide it from people not yet in the know. For this reason, she can’t use her full strength in public.
Weakness: Like other oni, Kasen (allegedly) won’t approach a sardine head or a broken holly branch, and roasted soy beans burn her skin.

Description:
Kasen Ibaraki, also going by Ibarakasen and formerly known as Ibaraki-douji, is an oni masquerading as a “hermit”, a Taoist mountain mystic. Unlike the other oni, she has decided not to retreat underground and wants to mingle with the surface world instead. Her right arm was cut off by a magical blade many centuries ago and remains unable to grow back, which is why she has to replace it with a magical prosthesis consisting of magical smoke inside a white bandage. She seeks to find and reattach her arm one day.

Not only is Kasen secretly one of the sages of Gensokyo, she has some mastery of hermit magic, though she often ends up stumbling over her words when her ignorance about related topics threatens to be revealed. Her home is within her Senkai, a pocket dimension created with the hermit arts, and can only be accessed by following an invisible path at a specific spot in the mountains (though some people have found it through their own magic or just sheer superhuman luck).

She possesses a strange artifact known as the Ibaraki Box of a Hundred Medicines, a sake-drinking box that heals the wounds and ailments of whoever drinks from it. If used by an already healthy person, it grants a temporary increase in strength; however, this comes with the side-effect of temporarily giving the drinker an oni-like personality (crass and aggressive), and overuse may even lead to a full transformation.

Kasen is generally friendly, but has taken a one-sided mentor-like attitude towards Reimu and others, having a tendency to lecture them for acting immorally or not doing their work properly. Of course, she’s getting to do this less and less often, as more and more people are starting to know her secret and can playfully dangle it as blackmail material if she gets too annoying.

Build Comments:
Kasen is the central character of Wild and Horned Hermit, an ongoing side manga started in 2010. The fact that she’s secretly an oni is basically an open secret from the moment that you read the title, and several characters even allude to it, only the humans and some other minor youkai remaining (possibly) ignorant. She’s the physically weakest of the Four Devas introduced so far, but that just makes her the third-strongest person around. There’s no confirmation of her full strength, but I reckoned she has no reason to be much weaker than Suika.

Kasen has yet to receive a full official profile and her exact abilities are kept vague in general, but I went with the interpretation that her mastery of animals isn’t any sort of mind control and that she’s just really good at handling them (with Comprehend, though). It’s likely that she’s hiding some more impressive tricks. Generally speaking though, she’s more agile and intellectual than the other two oni, but still a real dork on occasion. She’s also the only one whose sake-related artifact (totally not an oni, guys) actually has a mechanical effect. Healing powers other than Regeneration are a rarity in Touhou, too, but they don’t become relevant very often either.

Her various pets stay in her Senkai, but she can summon them to her side as needed. In the fighting games her combat style mostly consists of summons, with the animals hopping in for a single attack and disappearing again. Their PLs just so happened to form a nice line from 9 to 4. This list likely isn’t exhaustive, but contains the ones we’ve seen so far. The eagle and dragon can serve as flying mounts, the dragon can breathe fire, and the raijuu is basically a poisonous Pikachu, but otherwise they’re pretty straight-forward animals, all of them minions.

TH08 ~ IN

TH08 ~ Imperishable Night

Released: August 15th, 2004

“The youkai of Gensokyo notice that a small sliver of the full moon is missing. Although humans wouldn't realize the difference, the youkai are extremely troubled by it. Yukari, Alice, Remilia, and Yuyuko enlist Reimu, Marisa, Sakuya, and Youmu to help get to the bottom of the latest incident. To buy time and stop the false moon from setting, they create an unending night, which of course only ends up confusing people further…”

Image

Imperishable Night has an unique tag-team system where each human character is paired with a nonhuman partner. As in most of the games, holding Shift activates Focus Mode, making the player move slower and shoot in a different pattern, but here it also switches characters for the duration.

Playable
Barrier Team: Reimu Hakurei & Yukari Yakumo
Magic Team: Marisa Kirisame & Alice Margatroid
Scarlet Team: Sakuya Izayoi & Remilia Scarlet
Netherworld Team: Youmu Konpaku & Yuyuko Saigyouji

Opponents
Boss 1: Wriggle Nightbug
Boss 2: Mystia Lorelei
Boss 3: Keine Kamishirasawa
Boss 4: Reimu Hakurei/Marisa Kirisame (depending on team)
Mid 5: Tewi Inaba
Boss 5: Reisen Udongein Inaba
Final: Eirin Yagokoro
Hidden Final: Kaguya Houraisan
Extra: Fujiwara no Mokou

Abilities 26 + Skills 6 + Advantages 2 + Powers 48 + Defenses 17 = 100

COMPLICATIONS:
Alcohol: Despite their immunity to most poison, alcohol affects youkai normally.
Prejudice: Even weak youkai may inspire not-entirely-undeserved fear in those unaccustomed to dealing with them. Wriggle causes particular disgust due to her association with insects.
Weakness: As primarily spiritual beings, youkai are susceptible to certain magic (mostly sealing and exorcism) that might not affect humans. In addition, their Immortality cannot revive them if properly exorcised after death.

Forgetful: Whether or not she actually has a bad memory, Wriggle has stated that she (and other insects) discard information as soon as it seems no longer relevant.
Power Loss: Wriggle can only summon insects that are feasibly available in the vicinity, able to hear her ultrasonic signal and able to reach her.

Description:
Wriggle Nightbug is a relatively weak firefly youkai with the power to control insects. The Gensokyo Chronicles advise that while she herself isn’t particularly dangerous, the insects she surrounds herself with can be poisonous or carry dangerous diseases. Harvest mites, practically invisible but carrying a kind of typhus, deserve specific mention. Luckily, Wriggle isn’t particularly aggressive, and her insects can repelled like any other through heat, cold, smoke or pesticide.

In the 1st stage of IN, Wriggle stumbles across the heroines while they’re digging through the woods. Because of real or imagined insults she challenges them to a fight, and is unceremoniously shot out of the sky.

Build Comments:
Ah, nice to do a relatively simple low-level mook for a change. Feels like forever since I did anyone below PL 11. Wriggle’s another unremarkable early-game boss mostly there to establish the night-time mood of the game, though her stage theme in particular is surprisingly cool. I took some liberties in the exact workings of her insect control, namely the ultrasonic stuff. While she’s pretty harmless to any real combatant, a large swarm of stinging insects is still pretty dangerous (and gross) for standard civilians. Fanworks mostly show her hanging out with other similar jobbers, though it also used to be a mild running gag that her design looks unusually boyish for a Touhou character. Her “Wriggle Kick” is also somewhat memetic, referring to the way her sudden entrance onto the screen has a tendency to kill more people (by crashing into them) than her actual fight.

Speaking of design, since I don’t have much to say on Wriggle herself: around this time, ZUN is dropping his mysterious habit of giving so many characters mob caps for no particular reason – they don’t really show up after this. The frilly gothic dresses are also toned down a bit, though never removed completely.

Second, you may or may not have noticed that some characters have English names for some mysterious reason. They’re actually like that in the original untranslated games too - Wriggle for instance is spelled "Riguru Naitobaggu". This is mostly limited to early-game generic youkai (Rumia was possibly intended to be Lumia), fairies (Cirno is likely supposed to have “Chill” somewhere in there) and intentionally foreign characters (like the Scarlets), but it’s still a strange trend in a very distinctly Japanese setting.

---

Dunno if this sounds silly, but I’d be delighted if people actively following this thread gave a quick heads-up in the comments. I’m enjoying it for its own sake, obviously, and the view counter is at least going up, but it’d definitely be nice to gauge interest a bit and keep my motivation up. :D (inb4 it’s completely crushed)

I'm following the thread, and enjoying it so far. I'm a Touhou fan, and I also like "Team 9", as the fans dubbed them. (After all, Mystia is part of my username.)

COMPLICATIONS:
Alcohol: Despite their immunity to most poison, alcohol affects youkai normally.

Weakness: As primarily spiritual beings, youkai are susceptible to certain magic (mostly sealing and exorcism) that might not affect humans. In addition, their Immortality cannot revive them if properly exorcised after death.

Power Loss: Mystia needs to be able to sing properly in order to use her, well, song, which means that anything as simple as a cough could neutralize it.
Relationship: Mystia is close friends with Kyouko Kasodani.

Description:
Mystia is a minor night sparrow youkai who stalks the forest roads at night. Her pleasant song impairs the better judgment of anyone who hears it, often making them curiously wander towards it and try to investigate, at which point they realize they’ve been rendered night-blind and defenseless against her or other youkai. The Chronicles’ recommended countermeasure is to travel with a friend who can bring you back to your senses if you start acting strange.

She also runs a nightly food stand specializing in fried lamprey as an attempt to convince people to eat less chicken. She claims that it improves your night-vision, but she’s actually just rendering people night-blind and then dismissing the effect to create this illusion. More recently she has formed a punk band with Kyouko Kasodani, the junior acolyte from Myouren Temple, organizing surprise “guerrilla concerts” at night as an outlet for all their stress from work.

She attacks the heroines in the 2nd stage of IN, yadda yadda, unceremoniously shot out of the sky.

Build Comments:
Another low-level youkai pretty much on Wriggle’s level, though somewhat more competent in melee (since she has no bugs to help her). Much like her, she only has one real power, though it can be a surprisingly nasty one, especially since it’s Insidious. Good against hapless civilians, but again, not particularly useful in direct combat with someone actually competent. Just like Wriggle, the fans often throw her together with the “Team 9” jobber squad that KorokoMystia mentioned (named after the Cirno meme).

In addition to a playable role in PoFV (again, that game’s a weird one), Mystia has gotten some really good treatment by later side materials, founding not only a moderately successful food stand but even a punk rock duo with fellow jobber Kyouko (who I may or may not do a Flash Forward for). She plays the guitar, of course, because it’s not like a punk band could let the actually good singer take the mic. Not a lot of characters of her caliber get that sort of continued exposure, and it's given her a new boost in popularity.

“My morning duties are sweeping, cooking, and meeting challengers. Let human screams echo throughout Gensokyo!"

Marisa – ” An echo spirit, huh? So all you do is parrot things back?”
Kyouko – “That’s right, so please don't tease me about it.“

Toughness +5 (Imp. 3), Fortitude +5, Will +4

Abilities 22 + Skills 7 + Advantages 1 + Powers 57 + Defenses 13 = 100

COMPLICATIONS:
Alcohol: Despite their immunity to most poison, alcohol affects youkai normally.
Prejudice: Even weak youkai may inspire not-entirely-undeserved fear in those unaccustomed to dealing with them. Kyouko is among the least threatening, though, and the temple has a good reputation.
Weakness: As primarily spiritual beings, youkai are susceptible to certain magic (mostly sealing and exorcism) that might not affect humans. In addition, their Immortality cannot revive them if properly exorcised after death.

Loud: Kyouko has no inside voice and tends to be way louder than necessary. She also has a quirk of unthinkingly parroting people’s words back at them.
Naive: Kyouko’s friendliness comes with a side of naivety, and she can act rather childlike. Her "training" at the temple mainly includes sweeping in front of the gate and other similar chores, possibly because she's not considered ready for anything more complicated.
Relationships: Kyouko is close friends with Mystia Lorelei. She’s also close with the other people at Myouren Temple.

Description:
The fate of the yamabiko (“mountain echoes”) is a model example of what has befallen youkai as a whole: they used to be mountain-dwelling youkai who listened to people yelling in the distance and repeated their words back at them, creating the illusion of echoes. However, as humans started believing less in monsters with too much time on their hands and more in simple acoustics, belief in the yamabiko faded, and their numbers began to diminish.

Kyouko is a young yamabiko and a fresh acolyte at Myouren Temple, a Buddhist temple oriented towards equality between humans and youkai. She mostly sweeps the ground in front of the gate and cheerfully greets any visitors, while listening to sutras she doesn’t really understand and repeating them all day long. She’s quite sweet and harmless most of the time, but likes to show off her fearsome youkai side when given the chance, and also plays in a punk band with Mystia Lorelei to vent stress and get to yell a bunch.

In the 2nd stage of TD, she’s just in the middle of her regular duties before getting a fly-by beatdown from the heroines.

Build Comments:
Pretty much a glass cannon with a decent super-shout but lousy defenses. Not really a combatant to begin with, though. Unless she has some hidden depths we have no idea about, I have no reason to assume she’s very experienced in fighting or dodging. In game, her echo powers also manifest as stuff like ricocheting bullets, but I’m going to call those a danmaku abstraction and/or a potential power feat.

Her connection to Mystia is described up above, and really comes out of nowhere for a character who at first glance might seem “classically cute” – but it’s out of nowhere in a great way, and ZUN generally doesn’t care about that sort of writing anyway. That being said, her other behavior is still pretty childish, and apart from fanworks occasionally grouping her up with other music-themed characters, she gets a lot of play as Myouren Temple’s mascot and part of the rather popular crew there. A honorable mention of her actually doing something “cool” in a fanwork goes to a comic where she managed to reflect Yuugi’s Annihilating Roar of all things.

I likely won’t build the rest of Myouren Temple until they actually show up in TH12 ~ Undefined Fantastic Object, so I guess Kyouko’s going to be their sole representative for a long while…

Re: Gensokyo Chronicles - Levander's Touhou Builds (Kyouko Kasodani)

Post by Levander »

The builds have slowed down a fair bit, which is to be expected given that I started the thread during a free weak but am now busy with classes and in the middle of a move. The fact that the next character is a weird one to build probably doesn't help, but I'm hoping to get her up in a couple days.

Toughness +3/10*, Fortitude +4/8*, Will +8

Abilities 28 + Skills 12 + Advantages 6 + Powers 81 + Defenses 8 = 135

COMPLICATIONS:
Involuntary Transformation: Keine transforms into her were-hakutaku form during the full moon (and never else) and can’t transform back voluntarily. She doesn’t go berserk, but may act especially agitated and stressed. Her condition is common knowledge even among humans, and generally accepted.
Power Loss: Keine’s ability to alter history is unable to affect the Hieda Clan’s Gensokyo Chronicles… whatever that means.
Relationship: Keine is close friends with Fujiwara no Mokou and rather protective of her, never mind how silly it may be, given this is Mokou we’re talking about…
Responsibility: Keine runs and teaches the only school in the Human Village. She has also named herself a protector of the village and humans as a whole, believing that other forces in Gensokyo are either unwilling or unable to truly act in their best interest.

Description:
The hakutaku (“white marsh”, also known as kutabe or baí zé) is a legendary youkai said to appear before virtuous rulers at the beginning of their reign and give them warnings of future calamities or other valuable information, including a comprehensive dictionary of youkai gifted to the Yellow Emperor of China. It is said to be bovine or feline in shape, possessing six horns and nine eyes spread across its body.

Keine Kamishirasawa is a were-hakutaku, and her therianthropy is acquired (through unknown means) rather than innate, meaning she is otherwise human but transforms on nights of the full moon. In her human form she has the ability to consume history, while in her hakutaku form she is able to create it. She is popular with the human villagers and runs the local school in addition to being a historian not unlike those of the Hieda Clan.

In the 3rd stage of IN, the heroines try to investigate the Human Village, only to find it missing completely (though Yukari can still see it). Keine appears and declares that she has erased the Human Village from history to hide it from whatever is causing this abnormal night. After a battle, the heroines manage to convince her that they’re trying to help, and get pointed in the right direction. She reappears in the Extra Stage in her were-hakutaku form to try and stop the heroines from harassing Mokou.

Build Comments:
Another book-themed character, and another related to the Human Village no less. They’re almost oddly prevalent, alongside music-themed characters of different sorts. It’s almost like ZUN the composer and mythology nerd really likes music and books. Hmm…

Anyhoo, her ability (or abilities, rather) is so ill-defined that I really didn’t know what to do with it. The ability to erase history sounds powerful indeed, but oddly enough, it doesn’t actually involve any sort of reality-warping, or even memory-wiping as one might expect. The only time she’s shown using it to “erase the history of the Human Village being founded”, the whole thing turns invisible, but everyone who shows up goes “hey, where’d the village go?”, and she soon reverses the whole thing. I guess that when used on something less well-known than a whole village, an all-senses Continuous Illusion would do a pretty good job keeping it hidden (the Insight DC is pretty low, but how the heck do you interact with the thing to begin with?), but it’s still limited to simply hiding stuff as far as we know. If it can do something fancier or actually erase the effects of things, it sure isn’t shown.

At least the power’s massive cost made her Metamorph pretty easy to build. Her hakutaku ability to create history is either a lot more straight-forward (simply giving her knowledge of past events and thus allowing her to write them down, thus creating history in a sense) or even more convoluted, but never shown in action either way. Perhaps more importantly, she gets a big physical boost that turns her from a “competent civilian” into a decent powerhouse capable of busting up minor youkai.

ZUN and the fans both like to pretty much ignore Keine’s power and focus on other aspects of her character instead (well, mainly the fans, since ZUN doesn’t use her much at all). People typically emphasize her role as the most reliable human and adult in the series, representative of the Human Village, school teacher (including some comedic stories where some of the more child-like characters attend her school), and close friend (or more…?) of the far more popular Mokou. She serves a very useful niche as a character, but any depiction of her powers tends to require a lot of extrapolation or just plain reinterpretation to work.

As a side note, her surname is actually a silly pun: the characters in Kamishirasawa can also be read as "Ue-Hakutaku".

Motivation: At this point, Tewi really just lives for simple pleasures (including money and pranks) without a real care in the world.
Relationships: Tewi is close with the rest of the inhabitants of Eientei, especially Reisen, who tends to be the primary victim of her pranks. She’s also the respected leader of all the youkai rabbits in Gensokyo.
Reputation: Everyone familiar with Tewi knows that she isn’t to be trusted. This still doesn’t stop them from ultimately falling for her schemes, though.

Description:
Tewi Inaba is a beast youkai born from a white rabbit. She lives in the Bamboo Forest of the Lost, approaching travelers to help or hinder them at her whim. She possesses the very real ability to bring good luck (rabbit's feet are likely not involved), though she might prefer to keep it for herself. As the leader of the youkai rabbits of Gensokyo, she has made a deal with the inhabitants of Eientei to defend the premises in exchange for blessing her comrades with sapience.

If Tewi is indeed the legendary White Hare of Inaba, that means she hails from the age of the gods, making her several thousand years old, and Akyuu does confirm that she is one of the oldest beings in Gensokyo. Age may not have brought her great strength, but what it did bring is experience and wit. Tewi is an accomplished trickster, prankster, con artist and businesswoman, making her way through life with skill rather than power.

In the 4th stage of IN, the heroines enter the notorious Bamboo Forest of the Lost, cross paths with each other, and up fighting over yet another misunderstanding (the boss being either Reimu or Marisa depending on the team). By the end of their fight, they find that they’ve come to a large estate in the middle of the woods that they’ve never seen before. They enter the mansion and have a brief fight with Tewi before moving on.

Build Comments:
Pretty simple as far as builds go. Not really a major combatant, but as usual, just the baseline youkai stats and powers make her surprisingly expensive. She’s the most-developed midboss in the series by far (being playable in PoFV and having a major role in the gag manga “Inaba of the Moon and Inaba of the Earth” as well as others), and decently popular with the fans too, filling a popular if sometimes annoying role as a seemingly childish prankster who’s wiser than she looks.

COMPLICATIONS:
Relationships: Reisen is close with the rest of the inhabitants of Eientei. Her connection with Tewi is often one of sibling-like rivalry, as Reisen tends to be the primary victim of her pranks.
Reputation: Reisen’s former comrades and leaders on the Moon consider her a deserter, though how much they actually care can vary. On the Earth, most people think Reisen an eccentric if relatively harmless youkai, and treat her as such.
Responsibility: In addition to serving Eientei in general, Reisen is the medical apprentice of Eirin Yagokoro and has to run various errands for her, which includes medicine sales and deliveries in the Human Village.

Description:
Moon rabbits are, well, humanoid rabbits dwelling on the Moon, deceptively similar but separate from the youkai rabbits of Earth. They serve the Lunarians as an almost slave-like working class, sometimes treated with pet-like affection but no less bound in servitude. They also form the Lunar Defense Corps: what passes for a military on the Moon, though typically inactive due to… being on the Moon.

Reisen was a soldier in the LDC until the 1960’s, when the Lunarian leadership became increasingly paranoid of an impending Earthling attack. The Apollo 11 mission that landed on the Moon and set up an enemy flag was seen as the first wave of an invasion, and any human presence on the Moon was potentially lethal in itself. As such, the LDC was starting to mobilize as well. Around this time, Reisen decided to take the opportunity and flee to Earth, leaving the Corps behind. On the Earth, she eventually found and joined forces with the former Lunarians living in Eientei – the House of Eternity – deep within the Bamboo Forest of the Lost. She was given the nickname Udongein by Eirin, and the surname Inaba by Kaguya, sharing it with the youkai rabbit Tewi.

All Moon rabbits possess a telepathic connection with each other (reaching from the Earth to the Moon), but possibly as an extension of this, Reisen has an unique ability to manipulate waves of all kinds – light, sound and so on. In addition to hiding herself or creating illusions, if someone looks into her eyes, she can even disrupt their brainwaves to control their mind in various ways, earning herself quite scary a reputation despite her decently friendly personality.

In the 5th stage of IN, the heroines enter Eientei, and Reisen does her darndest to stop them from finding her mistress. Obviously, she fails.

Build Comments:
Reisen marks the first reference to the Lunar Capital, which would later become a rather important recurring element in the series (the next few characters will reveal more). Her backstory is also notoriously confusing, though, and one of the relatively few cases where I think that ZUN has resorted to outright retcons, since all the conflicting information is pretty hard to reconcile otherwise. Plus, Akyuu’s usually decent research is totally off when it comes to her and the other Lunar characters, hence the Benefit (Cipher) I don’t typically care for. Also, it’s not entirely clear whether Moon rabbits are in fact a special type of youkai, and if not, what, but I went with the interpretation that they’re a separate species of mysterious origins.

Looking at her powers, Reisen is actually pretty powerful and versatile, “waves” being a pretty handy thing to manipulate, but like a lot of characters in the series, she never really gets to use them to their full capacity. Fanworks obviously like to toy with the possibilities: one of my favorite small-scale examples has her analyze sound frequencies to decipher a subliminal message in a piece of music. Her boss battle is quite unique in its use of things like invisible and hallucinatory bullets, though. Her iconic finger lasers are later complemented by a weird-looking energy gun, which is “unique” to her but seemingly pretty standard Moon-tech, hence Equipment.

All her interesting elements combined, including her starring role in “Inaba and Inaba”, have made Reisen pretty popular. Many years later she’d get another starring role in Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom, reinforcing the somewhat forgotten trend of Stage 5 bosses becoming playable. She only has one theme song, arguably fewer than any other mainline playable if you count stage themes as belonging to the midboss of said level, but Lunatic Eyes is once again one of the more iconic songs in the series.

Enemy: Though the Moon’s attempts to find them seem to be half-hearted and sporadic at best, and they’ve also had peaceful contact in the past few years, Eirin is still wary of the possibility of the Lunarians somehow threatening Eientei.
Relationship: Eirin is something of a co-leader of Eientei, and rather close with its other inhabitants.
Responsibility: For reasons unknown, Eirin is extremely loyal to Princess Kaguya Houraisan, to the point of fulfilling all her requests even at great risk to herself.
Secret: Eirin has convinced the Human Village that she's a mere human rather than a Lunarian god. She also doesn't make a lot of noise about having taken the Hourai Elixir.

Description:
The Lunarians consist mainly of the ancient race of amatsukami, the “Celestial Gods” most famous for creating Japan and perhaps the world. In contrast with the kunitsukami (Earthly Gods), the amatsukami are actual biological creatures and require no faith to sustain them; however, this also means that they will very slowly age and can die in any way mortals can. In order to avoid this fate, their race eventually migrated to the Moon and created a hidden world not entirely unlike Gensokyo. The Moon is entirely free of kegare, the impurity associated with life and death, allowing the Lunarians to live forever, but only as long as they avoid contamination. In their isolation, they have developed extremely powerful magic and technology, but grown increasingly disdainful and perhaps ignorant of Earth.

Eirin Yagokoro was formerly the Brain of the Moon, its intellectual leader and a key player in the Lunarians’ migration (which involved warping the fabric of reality until the mathematical probability of the Lunarians spontaneously transferring to the Moon approached 100%). However, at the request of Kaguya Houraisan, she combined her knowledge with Kaguya’s power to create the Hourai Elixir, a legendary medicine that will make one fundamentally immortal and timeless in a way that no force in the universe can subvert. Kaguya took the elixir, which ended up afflicting her with kegare and thus making her hazardous to all Lunarians around her, leading to her being exiled to Earth (after attempts at executing her proved… ineffective).

Years later, the Lunarians seemed to have changed their mind, as they sent Eirin with a group of envoys to fetch Kaguya back to the Moon. However, Kaguya had grown fond of the Earth and refused to leave; Eirin was loyal as ever and feeling guilty that Kaguya had been punished in her place, so she killed the rest of the envoys and stayed with Kaguya, taking the Hourai Elixir herself and becoming a fugitive for all eternity. She and Kaguya created Eientei (the House of Eternity) in the area that’d later be sealed up with Gensokyo, and hid it from the world.

It is said that Eirin can create any kind of medicine known or even unknown to man; however, it’s worth noting that this only covers medicine that’s actually possible to make, not just literally anything imaginable. Of course, she can just rely on sorcery or even her stash of Lunarian technology as a backup if ever necessary.

Centuries passed, until one day Eirin caught wind that the Lunarians were looking for them again. She cast a massive barrier around the entire planet, intended to block passage from the Moon. However, as a side effect of this spell, the Moon appeared somewhat distorted, leading several people in Gensokyo to investigate and eventually invade Eientei itself, reaching Eirin herself in the final stage of IN. After explaining the situation, Eirin eventually agrees to lower the barrier once the threat has passed.

From this point on, Eientei came out of isolation and started interacting with the rest of Gensokyo. Eirin and her moon rabbit student Reisen provide cheap medical care to the people of the Human Village, who are unaware of their Lunar origins. She has also has some involvement in Gensokyo’s power politics, wanting to assert her independence but not overly interested in any plays for further influence.

Hourai Elixir:
An unique potion created through the combination of Eirin’s expertise and Kaguya’s power to manipulate the eternal. The first taste makes one incapable of aging; a second taste, immune to illness; a third, absolutely immortal. Even the worst injuries will recover within days, but more notably, “dying” will lead to complete resurrection within mere seconds even if the body was totally vaporized. The person’s very essence becomes “incompatible with death”, and no known force in the universe can kill them or undo the elixir’s effects. Only four people are known to have taken the elixir, though it is said that eating the liver of a Hourai immortal will have the same effect (after which the immortal will grow a new one).

Build Comments:
Eirin is a weird one to build, because while she’s certainly very powerful, it’s hard to say how exactly that manifests as combat power. The only thing I really gave her was the bow she’s typically depicted with, though it’s most likely there as a religious symbol of wisdom, not necessarily a practical weapon. INT 12 is the absolute highest of anyone in the setting, though, so at least she has that to brag about.

Anyhoo, Eirin’s the first god in the series up to this point, but very different from the later ones due to being a.) a Lunarian amatsukami who b.) has taken the Hourai Elixir, which also features in the next two builds. Touhou being based mainly on Shinto mythology, gods/kami as a whole aren’t necessarily all that powerful, since as you might be aware, basically everything from random blades of grass and up has a kami. Eirin however is one of the very oldest and most influential deities, Yagokoro-no-Omoikane, god of knowledge and the pantheon’s main planner in several early myths. Her Touhou manifestation is a sublime master of medicine, magic and (to a somewhat lesser degree) technology far beyond that used by humans, and thus a very powerful mastermind type.

In fanworks, Eirin tends to range anywhere from a benevolent healer to a reasonable authority figure to a ruthless “mad scientist” type, but usually “stern and wizened” to at least some degree. Whatever the case, her position as a central figure at Eientei lands her a lot of supporting roles, but very few starring ones.

Description:
Princess Kaguya is a Lunarian born into the royal house of the Moon, growing up in luxury. One day, however, she requested the Brain of the Moon - Eirin Yagokoro - to craft an elixir of immortality for her. With the help of her own power of eternity, the Hourai Elixir was created. It was a success, making her perfectly immortal, but also making her radiate impurity in a way dangerous to other Lunarians. They attempted to execute her… several times… until eventually just exiling her to Earth.

Kaguya landed in 8th century Japan, where she was taken in by a kindly woodcutter and his wife who treated her as their own daughter. However, as the years passed, word of her incredible beauty spread across the land. She was taken to the capital, where all manner of great noblemen tried to court her. Unwilling to marry any of them, she gave them one impossible request after the other, sending them to chase after legendary one-of-a-kind items that she secretly already possessed. Three men brought back fabrications, losing face in front of the nobility, and two more perished on their quests. Eventually, Eirin and the other lunar envoys came to fetch her back to the Moon; however, she and Eirin killed the envoys and went into hiding instead. However, before disappearing, she left the Emperor with a final gift: a dose of the Hourai Elixir.

They hid in the mansion of Eientei, Kaguya using her power to conceal it from the world and protect it from the rigors of time. However, 900 years later, Fujiwara no Mokou – daughter of Fujiwara no Fuhito, one of the men humiliated by Kaguya – stumbled across Kaguya. She had stolen the Hourai Elixir in a moment of weakness, but long since grown to resent her immortality. Meeting Kaguya reignited her ancient grudge, and since then, they’ve had a tradition of fighting each other to the death on a near-daily basis to alleviate their mutual boredom.

When replaying the final stage of IN after beating it once, the player has a choice of flying after Kaguya and fighting her instead of Eirin.

Build Comments:
Princess Kaguya is the central character of The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, the oldest surviving piece of Japanese prose and perhaps the country’s most famous fairytale. It’s pretty iconic to begin with, but there was also a Studio Ghibli adaptation a few years back. Of course, the original story ends with Kaguya being taken back to the Moon, unlike her Touhou incarnation.

Fan depictions aside, who in Touhou is supposed to be “Attractive” is obviously anyone’s guess, since the subject never comes up, and which cartoon characters are supposed to be hotter than others tends to be based on stuff like costume design and body proportions anyway. However, Princess Kaguya is quite literally a fairytale princess, and canonically beautiful enough (at least in the eyes of 8th century Japan) to be considered the most desirable woman in the country, making powerful noblemen go on impossible quests just to earn her favor. She might be the only Touhou character for whom Attractive is actually justified. Not that anyone in the modern day setting really remarks on it, and she doesn’t particularly stand out in its art style.

Kaguya’s combat capabilities are pretty much reverse-engineered from Mokou’s, since they need to be capable of at least having a decent fight, though I think Mokou’s going to have the advantage most of the time. For the same reason, she also needs to be able to fly. Presumably she’s pretty good at “generic magic bullets”, but since I’m deliberately ignoring those, I’m going with the popular fan interpretation of her array of artifacts, which her spell cards are named after. They include the five items she requested from the nobles but secretly already had (which basically manifest as different Blasts), plus the Red Stone of Aja, a JJBA reference. The Robe in particular is something Mokou will have to get rid of before she can do much anything.

As for her own power, it’s another hopelessly vague one. The “eternity” part is simple enough, consisting of out-of-combat plot device uses like creating the Hourai Elixir, placing Eientei into a temporal stasis and undoing the heroines’ infinite night spell; however, the description of the “instantaneous” is outright technobabble. “Her other ability regarding the instantaneous allows control over extremely short time durations. It allows her to act using just aggregates of instants so short as to be imperceptible to human beings. That time interval is composed of instants, so it cannot be perceived by normal humans, even though time progresses normally.” The only interpretations I’ve seen of this ability in use basically make her a Sakuya-lite, allowing her to make brief moves too quickly for anyone to see, and that’s the simple version I went with here. No way I’m tacking Sakuya’s full moveset on her.

Kaguya’s personality in fanworks tends to depend on who she’s interacting with, and whether she’s supposed to be sympathetic and/or funny or not. With the rest of Eientei, she’s usually kind and sweet, sometimes a bit of a child. With Mokou, she’s either the classic “cold noblewoman” type, or an outright boorish brute whose elegance is just a thin veneer and who’s perfectly willing to get into a shouting fistfight with her. Either depiction can also overlap with the idea of her as a shut-in nerd who has scarcely left the house in a thousand years and prefers to stay home and play videogames instead. Of course, all these versions can conceivably fit together as different sides of the same person.

---

How are a bunch of separate Easily Removable items in an array supposed to work, anyway? Is it even allowed, and if yes, should you apply the discount to the array as a whole, or to each power individually? Technically losing access to one thing in an array is supposed to block off the rest too, but that’s a pretty clunky rule and often ignored. Never putting Easily Removable powers in an array is a bit unreasonable, too, since that’d mean paying full price for every single one, even if they largely overlap.
