Total: Abilities: 94 / Skills: 12--6 / Advantages: 8 / Powers: 29 / Defenses: 10 (112)

Oliver- Suddenly-Aging Child:
-Oliver started out as a cute purple baby on the Mantis People's home planet- he is the son of Omni-Man and a bug-lady, but looks mostly human. As his mother's people are a super-aging race, Oliver couldn't stay on his home planet, and so he came to live on Earth with Mark and his mother, Debbie (who was initially unimpressed with having to care for her ex-husband's new offspring, but copped to liking the boy). He rapidly grew to talking age, then became a preteen in short order- one of Kirkman's MANY attempts to "time-skip" certain aspects of the book.

-As "Kid Omni-Man", Oliver was depicted as a character that caused great strain on things- he thought little of human life (his people died so quickly, and lived only to be in service of others; humans seemed selfish and wasteful by contrast), was impulsive and brash, and IMMEDIATELY executed the Mauler Twins for committing serious crimes, and then was completely cavalier about their deaths. He eventually decided to go along with Mark's line of thinking, but was clearly angered at being forced to hold back- a subplot that was quickly dropped. Allen the Alien comments on his cavalier attitude towards humanity later (noting that Oliver LIVED among them and appears to care less for them than Allen does- he's prepared to guiltlessly see humanity die, while Allen tortures himself over the idea), but Oliver EVENTUALLY sees the light a bit, after watching Mark nearly die- his empathy over nearly losing his brother causes him to realize that EVERYONE feels that way about someone, making him value life a little bit more.

Oliver the Jobber To The Stars:
-Oliver soon grew to teenage years, which saw a power-boost... of sorts. See, I realized on my second read-through that Oliver was essentially Mark's "Hacksaw Jim Duggan". Basically, like what Hercules used to be to Thor. Or what Martian Manhunter is every time Superman is around- a hero who is powerful enough to be "close-ish" to the main hero, but not enough that the nearest villain can't kick his ass in order to look good. On several occasions, Oliver is EASILY defeated by Viltrumite enemies in order to throw some drama into the situation- Conquest punches him out and nearly rips him in half, for example. During the Viltrumite War, he is maimed with shocking ease, as Grand Regent Thragg tears off one of his arms, and detonates his jaw with a single punch- "Plot Armor" saves him (many fans wrote in assuming he was dead), and his broken stuff is rebuilt.

-Oliver eventually leaves Earth before Mark does, marrying a bug-lady (his cross-species attractions are noted more than once) but not really getting up to much. His mustache makes him looke like a stereotypical 1960s gay guy, too. He's killed on a mission against the Viltrumites in the end, breaking Mark's heart and drawing him into the battle- Allen the Alien, leader of the Coalition of Planets, cops to having set Oliver up on a dangerous (possibly suicidal) mission- he NEEDED Mark to join the fight, and this was his only way of doing so. His death is really the beginning of the "Endgame" for the series.

Oliver's Sub-Invincible Might:
-As Kid Omni-Man, Oliver is strong enough to one-shot either Mauler Twin to death (neither were expecting him to strike them that hard), but nowhere near a Viltrumite's adult strength level. He really never reaches it- his mother's people don't have the compatibility with Viltrumite DNA that human DNA does, and so they're always very "Cannon Fodder"-y. Importantly, though, Oliver possesses All-Out Attack & Power Attack, making him a little more dangerous than Inexperienced Invincible was, which allows him to do things like blow a Mauler Twin's brain out the top of his head with an uppercut (!!).

-Oliver Grayson is very much like his brother when he first started out by this point, packing similar physical Stats and Powers onto a smaller frame. However, he lacks Mark's charisma or wisdom, much less his Skills. He is very intelligent, though, just not packing any Skills onto that genius just yet. He never really develops them- they drop his "fast learner" stuff pretty quickly, though he's mentioned as being Eidetic at one point ("I still remember my mother", he says, even though he was a baby when he left her). Oliver's power level initially seemed to grow by the day, but eventually plateaued at PL 11-ish.

One thing that always seemed kind of stupid was that whenever the Invincibles were stranded on that Earth, they always seemed to hang around the same general area. They never flew around the planet, explored other ruins, or even just left the planet to try and find other worlds. At that point, most of them should be like their dad where they have interstellar flight and can hold their breath for weeks. Some of them had to have at least a rough idea of where a Coalition or Viltrumite world were at.

Guarding the Globe

Post by Jabroniville »

GUARDING THE GLOBE:
(this is from my notes on the series overall, but I figured I would re-post it here, as we've hit the part where I start including the newbies from those books with the other builds)

The Guarding the Globe books were a bit interesting- it's sort of like if The Avengers had a multinational cast, and were the worst super-heroes ever. Like... these guys TRY HARD, but holy crap- they can scarcely go on a single mission without the civilian body count resembling something out of a Dan Snyder movie. Every villain or disaster seems ready to kill THOUSANDS of people. Part of it's the lower Power Levels- Samson, Bulletproof and Brit just can't get it done physically, and Robot's genius seems stunted somehow. The TEAM picking up a body count is pretty bad, too, as so many of the goofily-named side-people drop like flies. But Best Tiger? Best Tiger makes the book.

GTG soon becomes Invincible Universe, which gives us a bit more focus on some of the characters (Kid Thor & Knockout, in particular, got NOTHING before this). We still never saw much of Pegasus, though. Watching the book dance around Kirkman's "Babies" from Invincible was funny, as Robot & Monster Girl kind of had to be glossed over, and Bulletproof goes from "major part of the book" to "just a background guy" because he's suddenly become the new Invincible and Kirkman is going to use him a lot more. Some of the backstory bits were pretty funny, like Kid Thor's Nordic relatives ("You're growing a beard, finally!" "Maybe next year it'll be pubes?"). Of course Best Tiger has an issue where he "kills" the rest of the team as a fake-out for a Mind Controller villain, then removes the villain's powers, because "Name not GOOD Tiger. BEST Tiger." They seriously go so over the top with this guy that he goes past "too silly" and becomes MORE AWESOME again. King Lizard is the villain of the last pair of issues, which is amusing. And in true Invincible villain fashion, he gets multiple issues of build-up, but his threat is neutralized almost instantly. His bomb-themed deathtrap was fairly solid, though, and contains real drama, as this IS the kind of series that would have the heroes screw up and kill millions.

Sadly, IU is cancelled after its twelfth issue (about a two-year run)- they simply announce that "there is some stuff being shaken up in the original title" that necessitates a break for Invincible Universe "for the time being", but of course it never returns. And in a move that pissed off this book's fans (and, well, anyone who bought issues hoping this book would "matter"), they were simply used as disposable nobodies for Robot's takeover of Earth- a handful of characters DIED, and the rest merely jobbed out in seconds and then NEVER DO ANYTHING AGAIN. You like Pegasus, Best Tiger, Brit or Le Bruiser? TOUGH TOENAILS, you'll never see them do anything again! And you like Kid Thor & Knockout? LOLZ.

Japandroid

Post by Jabroniville »

JAPANDROID
Role:
Disposable Hero

-Another character with very little focus, Japandroid was added to increase the global diversity in Guarding the Globe, but she basically did all of nothing before she was taken over by an alien life force. Having seen its mind, and realizing how dangerous it was, Japandroid (a little android girl) sacrificed her life by revealing her radioactive core, killing the being. The others mourned the character who'd had five lines of dialogue total, and that was it.

-Japandroid was tiny, but had a lot of Variable/Shapeshift, allowing her to take things and turn them into other things (like turning parking meters into ammunition for her gun-hands). When taken over by the alien life force, she grew spider legs.

Posting Invincible pics can be an iffy prospect- some of the better images are SO gory I hesitate to use them. The shot of Thragg basically tearing half of Oliver's face off with a single punch is pretty glorious, but iffy :).

Total: Abilities: 44 / Skills: 12--6 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 8 / Defenses: 15 (78)

-Knockout, like Kid Thor, receives almost no characterization in Invincible Universe until Kid Thor is killed by Thoth. Heartbroken, she lays Kid Thor's hammer down on his dead body, only to resurrect him. Their wedding is soon on, though it's broken up by a ton of fighting. She's your token "Tough Chick" character, but more of a romantic than most. Hilariously, after all this work by Phil Hester on that book, the two are killed without a word in Invincible, as Robot enacts his takeover of the world. A single controlled Drone takes on Kid Thor, Knockout, Yeti and Pegasus, blowing off Kid Thor's hand. When Knockout places the hammer in his other hand, resurrecting him, she has her HEAD sliced in half by Robot's energy blasts, and an enraged Kid Thor then has his hammer blown to pieces when the Drone catches it in mid-swing. Both are slain, while Yeti & Pegasus escape.

-There's REALLY not a lot to go on with this character. All she does in Invincible Universe is throw out punches at things, and she's easily beaten in most fights. She's barely worth statting, really.

One of my favorite scenes with Knockout was her first date with Kid Thor.
She shows up to their date in a tight little dress and her boobs are suddenly a-cup.

Turns out her manager informed her that she'd never make it as a popular hero without some, as Sailor Moon (Makoto specifically) put it "Talent". So, yeah, she's wearing a massively padded bra while doing the hero thing.

Also loved how she's worried that's soured their chance at a relationship and Kid Thor's like "That's cool" without missing a beat.

Yeah, to find out they get offed is pretty irksome. Especally since Knockout and Kid Thor are pretty easy to contain.
Actually the fact that Robot kills anybody is pretty weird considering the technology he had access to. Why wouldn't he just dump the heroes he couldn't safely leave alive on another dimension?

Oh, right, we need some drama. Oh and a pointless body count :~P

And that is another thing from this series. Seeing the Original Guardians get killed is shocking because it never happened before and wasn't expected. Seeing Mark almost get killed brutally by Omni-Man was the same thing. But after awhile you just get so jaded by all the blood and the death. It would have had much more effect if had been used more infrequently.

Kirkman had to work hard to keep Oliver from becoming the Scrappy of the series and I'm not sure he was entirely successful. He was really annoying early on.

I remember that from the original Capes mini-series, which was quirky and fun, if not especially complex (the art was pretty terrible tho). Kid Thor basically goes "So . . . um . . . what's up with your breasts?" Knock Out gives the explanation, admitting that she almost wore them tonight because previous dates had gone badly, and Kid Thor just goes "Whoa, don't get the wrong idea. I don't CARE about the size of your chest, I just had to ask. It'd be like if I'd shown up without my arm." At which point Knock Out goes "Oh thank God, because I was starting to like you."

In the Capes book the two had a pretty fun relationship. And either she talked her manager down to something that looks like a C-Cup, or she was just a late bloomer and developed those naturally.

It wasn't just you, the characters within the series seemed to just become jaded to all of the death. Like, how could anyone go along with Robot, regardless of his plans to make the world better, when his take over includes murdering heroes who apparently had no chance against him? It was really at that point that you got the feeling Kirkman was mentally done with the book and was just clearing things out for the sake of shock value. Because really, if their power was that overwhelming, why not just capture and imprison them? Why murder people he considered friends? It seemed like it was done solely to make Mark give up being a superhero and move out into space.

KID THOR (Real Name Unknown)
Role:

INTELLIGENCE 0 AWARENESS 1 PRESENCE 2

Skills:
Deception 2 (+4)
Expertise (Business) 2 (+2)

Perception 3 (+4)

Advantages:
Accurate Attack, Power Attack, Ranged Attack 2, Teamwork

Powers:

Strength-Damage +4 (Feats: Reach) (5 points)

Immortality 15 (Flaws: Source- Hammer) [15]

Hammer +10 (+6 Damage, DC 21)
Initiative +3

Defenses:
Dodge +10 (DC 20), Parry +10 (DC 20), Toughness +4, Fortitude +5, Will +5

Complications:
Vulnerable (Losing the Hammer)- Kid Thor literally requires his hammer to live- his life-force was drained by the villain Set, and he will die if he is separated from this ancestral weapon.
Relationship (Knockout)- They are eventually married.

Total: Abilities: 48 / Skills: 12--6 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 19 / Defenses: 12 (90)

-Kid Thor is pretty much the definition of "Background Character" in Invincible stuff- he debuted in the Capes Inc. book (about a bunch of superheroes for hire), and showed up in the background of some pages in Kirkman's more popular Invincible book, but never did or said anything. He ends up joining the Guardians of the Globe once they get their own series, but never really does anything until he's killed by Set. His girlfriend Knockout, mourning him, places his hammer on his corpse, which reawakens him into a perfectly healthy form! As soon as Robot takes a look at it, however, Kid Thor immediately drops dead once again. This is deemed to be of mystical origin, and soon Kid Thor has some metal gauntlets that permanently allow him to hold the hammer.

-Now sporting a beard, he soon marries Knockout in one of the final Invincible Universe issues... with just enough time for Robot to make his move to take over the world, resulting in the deaths of both Knockout and Kid Thor. SURE GLAD THE WRITERS WENT TO ALL THAT EFFORT WITH HIM, HUH, KIRKMAN?

-Kid Thor is a pretty simple Weapon Guy- a limited PL 8 with no real strengths as a hero (he's pretty minor-league), but one hell of a "Resurrection"-based power- he is probably unkillable so long as he wields his weapon, which is now merely Removable thanks to his gauntlets.
