What restaurant is your favorite game?

Post by Spectrum »

A friend once compared Dungeons and Dragons to McDonald's- not the best food, but consistent and everyone knows what it's like.

I think that (old) World of Darkness is more like a small independent coffee shop. Bitter, some really foul brews but a few subtle tasty concoctions.. and full of arteests that just want to ramble on how unfair the world is to them personally.

GURPS is a pizza parlor. Lots of options, lots of choices -- but most people just pick a few basic flavors.

Rifts / Palladium is kind of like that Chinese buffet that everyone goes to when they're on a budget. The food isn't as quality as other restaurants, even other buffets, but you can get whatever you want in whatever quantities you want.

I like the GURPS idea. Just like a pizza place, eighteen different ways to do the same thing, so many types of crust and then getting into calzone. Not to mention the 15 different types of noodle.. but in the end, it's the same ingredients- just in different ways.

*grumble* Yeah, never liked how GURPS had incompatible systems for magic, super powers, psionics, Voodoo, etc etc etc.

HERO is more like a programming language. Strength: You can do anything you want. Weakness: You have to know how to tell it what you want and it WILL do exactly what you tell it, no more, no less.

If I had to compare Hero to a restaurant, it would be one of those build your own pizza places. Except, "build" includes you have to make and knead the the dough for the crust and you go from there.

Also, while there are a virtually unlimited number of options, there's all sorts of niggly rules about which ones can actually be put together.

And, after operating for 20 years, the place closes, only to reopen under new management, and after half a dozen years, they start rejiggering how the ingredients are formulated.

Isn't Class Marvel also a game where you randomly roll on powers? So you can get truly errrrr.. creative combinations that you're left desperately trying to figure out how to build a character concept around? Or am I misremembering?

Maybe I'm just thinking of ICONs.

More like a chain of Mogolian hot pot places, you can pick anything you want and stick in the pot, but the staff looks at you funny if you do certain things.
