Re: Old-school Video Games with Insane(ly Awesome) Backstories

One of the first that comes to mind is Chrono Trigger, which had such time-travelling mess-up that even as an adult it took me a bit to wrap my head around it.

Re: Builds on the Sun (Airships)

Back in the days of the ATT I did some ship-building of my own and I came up with a "reverse autofire" rule for saturation weapons. Pretty much it meant that characters in a saturation area weapon suffered +1 damage for every 2 points they failed the Reflex Save, up to +5.

Re: J-Mart: LADIES NIGHT! Warrior Woman, Sin, Power Princess

I'm really partial to Gruenwald's 1985 Squadron Supreme characters. The various alternate versions from 2003 onward never really clicked with me.

He really looks like a mash-up of Jay Garrik and Impulse. ;)

I love that I inspired a whole chain of builds here, and I have to say you're doing way more with the concept than I ever did.
Thanks. I've been much slower than I hoped for with many of these builds, but I'm pretty happy with the results.

Re: Jab's Builds! (Timber Wolf! Cosmic Boy! Kid Quantum! Karate Kid!

I had to watch the movie twice to notice Kelly Preston, she shares most of her scenes with Snake Plissken. I thought that was ol' Jack Burton "You just listen to the old Idol of Millions here now and take his advice on a dark and stormy night when the lasers's flashin' and the missiles' flyin' and ...

Re: Batgirl III's Character Thread

Fun little factoid about that two-page spread, Hero Histories called it “The Panel That Created the X-Men.” The story goes that when Dave Cockrum drew Superboy and The Legion #200, he asked the editor for this particular page of art back, as he was an old-school LSH fan, and wanted it for his own c...

Re: Your first "Cartoon crush"

Destro and the Baroness, from G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero (1983-86). There was so much naughtiness going on with those two, both between the pair of them, and with either one of them and various other characters from the show. Especially Lady Jaye. And, although not a "cartoon," per se, I crushe...

Re: Batgirl III's Character Thread

Notes:
What? You thought I'd let there be a Batlad and Robin, but not include a LoSH-ized Batgirl?
Perish the thought.

Re: Jab's Builds! (Timber Wolf! Cosmic Boy! Kid Quantum! Karate Kid!

I wonder if people would take Chlorophyll Kid more seriously if he was a girl? Plant-based female characters have the whole Mothet Nature thing working for them, plant-based male characters (few as they are) tend to be seen as jokes. I don't think that is the problem. If I remember right Rall could...

Re: Swords and Sorcery: Defining the genre

Absolutely. Just because I know how the metaphysics of my settings work doesn't mean the people living in said settings do. :D Even better: I don’t have to bother to figure out the metaphysics in the first place! After reading series like Fullmetal Alchemist and The Dresden Files , I have to admit ...

Re: Masters of Ioun

Haven’t I mentioned before that my favorite roleplaying game setting of all time is AD&D2e’s Birthright ? In those games, you’d have an army of loyal soldiers, a castle, and a modestly sized duchy as part of your starting equipment . So would every other member of the party. Birthright was playing ...

Re: Masters of Ioun

Indeed. “Hiding behind an army of minions” is not only a very good “smarter not harder” option, it’s a style of gameplay I really enjoy and perfectly in keeping within the Planetary Romance genre convention. The trick is recruiting that army in the first place... All of the sudden I'm hearing that ...

Re: Swords and Sorcery: Defining the genre

I've probably gone on this rant before, but I've got a Love/Hate relationship with the Lorraine Williams era of TSR. On the one hand, the woman was an absolute tyrant who despite being an allegedly successful businesswoman, basically killed TSR with her business practices. She refused to let the ga...
