Re: Jab's Builds! (Timber Wolf! Cosmic Boy! Kid Quantum! Karate Kid!

On the topic of kids with with powers that don't have a lot of battlefield use, but have use elsewhere..Anybody remember Sky High ? I do remember that the sidekicks with supposedly "useless" powers (like turning into a gerbil) being made useful towards the end. Didn't the Commander have an ego the ...

Sky High was basically PS 238: The Motion Picture, only not as well-written and with a completely age-shifted cast. So, yeah, PS 238: The Motion Picture.

Re: Birthday Thread

You should see the turn out your birthday is having here in Portland, man. April 20th is apparently a really big deal.

Re: Jab's Builds! (Timber Wolf! Cosmic Boy! Kid Quantum! Karate Kid!

Aaron William's (the guy who made Nodwick ) has a "super-hero elementary school" comic called PS238 , which is your typical trope-laden superhero training academy story... That puts almost all its focus on the kids that don't have the sort of powers that would let them go into the Danger Room or tus...

I wonder if people would take Chlorophyll Kid more seriously if he was a girl? Plant-based female characters have the whole Mothet Nature thing working for them, plant-based male characters (few as they are) tend to be seen as jokes.

Re: Swords and Sorcery: Defining the genre

Oh, don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a working out the metaphysical stuff. I’m kind of a wonk that way. But it’s lower on my list of “to do” when world building than a plausible geography, a sensible history, a logical source of conflict(s), and some verisimilitude of society/culture. Then comes metaphys...

Absolutely. Just because I know how the metaphysics of my settings work doesn't mean the people living in said settings do. :D
Even better: I don’t have to bother to figure out the metaphysics in the first place!

Re: Swords and Sorcery: Defining the genre

I usually like my campaign settings to feature a bit of ambiguity regarding the gods and the source of divine magic. With theological debates, schisms, and the occasional heresy thrown in to mix things up. So the Kingdom of Northland’s official Church of Thor says that Thor grants his clerics spells...

Re: Masters of Ioun

Haven’t I mentioned before that my favorite roleplaying game setting of all time is AD&D2e’s Birthright ? In those games, you’d have an army of loyal soldiers, a castle, and a modestly sized duchy as part of your starting equipment . So would every other member of the party. Birthright was playing t...

Re: Castellia- A Fantasy Setting (Genies! Achairai! Arrowhawks! Hags!)

It's funny how near-universal the dislike of ugly old women is. Something about it really creeps out humanity on a base level. Especially prominent in Europe, where Atropos of the Fates was one of the most frightening of the Greek immortals. Ugly old men are seen as creatures of mockery, pity and h...

Re: Masters of Ioun

Indeed.

“Hiding behind an army of minions” is not only a very good “smarter not harder” option, it’s a style of gameplay I really enjoy and perfectly in keeping within the Planetary Romance genre convention. The trick is recruiting that army in the first place...

Re: Jab's Builds! (Timber Wolf! Cosmic Boy! Kid Quantum! Karate Kid!

The Subs were heroic as hell.

They had courage beyond belief, it’s one thing to face down a runaway robot when you know you’ve got Kryptonian Invulnerability or Phantom Phasing... But throwing down with an army of Daxamites when you’ve got color-changing ability?
